Mumsnet and McDonalds

DH popped into a Mcdonalds yesterday to (ahem) use the facilities. Did his usual trick of taking his iPhone with him, and later let me know that when he was connecting to the Internet, the free wifi for McDonalds users popped up 'in conjunction with Mumsnet'!!! The blurb on mumsnet still says they don't allow advertising from mcdonalds, but when we googled it, it turns out this ban was lifted last May, and 'Mumsnet is proud to be associated with the family friendly restaurant'. .

WTF? You might be, MNHQ, but I'm not.

Hello folks. Sorry to be a bit late to this thread but yes, it's true we're working with McDonald's on Family Friendly Wi-Fi. You can read all about our Family Friendly Wi-Fi programme here.

As for us deciding to take advertising from McDonald's, there were several threads discussing this beforehand - here and here, for example. And then Justine posted about our decision here.

We have updated our About us page to reflect all this but the About us page on the app is still, unfortunately, displaying our old copy about not taking ads from McDonald's. Blush This will be sorted when we release the new version of our Talk app - in a few weeks' time.

@AitchTwoOhOneTwo

are you happy with the 'proud to be supporting a family-friendly restaurant' line? when it seems to me your supporting family friendly wifi?

Where did you see this, Aitch?

@AIBUqatada

Lol that the superseded copy re boycotting McD shows precisely on the versions of the site that you can use to browse MN in McD toilets. If anyone dragged their desktop into a cubicle they wouldn't face the same ethical dissonance.Grin

Blush and sheepish Grin at ethical dissonance

@AitchTwoOhOneTwo

it's on the OP, Helen, not sure exactly where she got it from.

Ah, OK, thanks.

tattychicken, could you let us know where you saw those words, please?

Hello all,
Just to reiterate what Helen said further down/up (depending on your preferences) and to clear up a few other things raised - MacDonalds is a member of our Family Friendly wifi programme which is open to all public wifi providers. All that means is that they can display our FF Wifi logo and say that their public wifi is filtered for e.g hardcore porn, self harm sites etc. They pay a nominal fee to be a part of the programme and it is only concerned with their Wifi provision.

Here is exactly what we've agreed MacDs can say about the programme. And as far as I'm aware that is all they are saying.

(Nearly fell over when I saw what tattychicken said MacDs was saying about "MN being proud to be associated with the family friendly restaurant" because tbh we wouldn't let any company use words like that - far too cheesy - quite apart from the issue of whether a fast food restaurant could reasonably be classed as really family friendly.)

That said, we would allow MacDonalds to advertise on MN - a decision we came to last year having previously had them on our banned list, following extensive consultation with users and a clear majority saying they wouldn't mind. Since we reached that decision they have done a small amount of advertising on the site, but nothing major.

As ever, though, always happy to hear thoughts (either way) on whether you think we're doing the right thing.

@MrsHeffley

Yes I'd like to know which post was deleted,I'm totally bewildered.

Was it the one when I described my teaching experience which is no different to the newspaper article I linked to or a lot of research?

Kind of find it slightly upsetting that I've tried to be civil, polite and measured in my posts and have received some quite nasty, vitriolic,bullying insults but a post of mine (of which I can't for the life of me think could go against guidelines) gets deleted.

ConfusedThink it's time I went to bed.

MrsH - have checked and it was a post in which you said another poster was "deranged". Thus a personal attack.
