yada yada yada. I've seen the debates on here on fresh over frozen. I get that. But who the rubbery-fuck buys tinned veg??

Was strolling around the Co-Op today and clocked a a shelf of tinned peas/carrots/potatos.

Who the fuck would eat tinned peas?? The colour is so very wrong. I can't begin to imagine what the texture is like

I agree with TheProvincialLady that tinned tomoatoes have to be plain, no herbs, etc. I'd rather add my own seasoning. I've usually got half a dozen tins in at any one time, as the DCs have now declared they don't like ready made pasta sauces so I have to cook from scratch (which with a quick recipe I can do these days).

Have just checked the cupboard, and I've got some tinned fruit, and tinned fish (mackeral/tuna/sardines). DP loves tinned sardines on toast. No tinned meat.

Tinned fish is fantastic - my favourite is pilchards in tomato sauce. Very hard to find though in the past couple of years - morrisons seem to be about the only supermarket still doing them. I live in fear of them stopping stocking them Grin mackerel/sardines are just not the same and it has to be the glenryk (sp?) ones.

Tinned tuna is also fab.

DartsAgain · 28/04/2012 21:15

I have tins of the smallest size for baked beans you can get, as it's a single portion for DD, she's the only one who eats them in this house! Grin The Heinz tins might work out more expensive per 100g, but compared with the fact that a bigger tin would mean waste, it's economical for the few times I do them.

I am now working on my shopping list....Grin

Tinned pitted olives
Tinned tomatoes
Tinned corn
Tinned kidney, haricot, flageolet and other beans
Tinned mushrooms (in the cupboard to occasionally bung in a casserole)

Not tinned but in jars:

Baby beets
cucumbers
artichokes
onions

Tinned fruit

Cherries - great in a pie
peaches - with ice cream - dd loves them
pineapple
berries - mixed with apples for a pie

CremeEggThief · 28/04/2012 21:54

Just tinned pulses, baked beans, chopped tomatoes, sweetcorn and Heinz tomato soup for me.
Oh and pineapple for pizza!

squeakytoy · 28/04/2012 21:55

I still love Heinz Toast Toppers... has to be the cheese and ham one, and I add some chopped black olives for that classy extra touch! Grin

wonkylegs · 28/04/2012 21:56

Tinned sweetcorn only

LST · 28/04/2012 21:58

I loved tinned carrots and potatoes and marrowfat peas are THE best peas in the world.

So in answer to your question.. People like me..

dementedma · 28/04/2012 22:00

another vote here for tinned sweetcorn - it is a staple in our house for soups, wraps, fritters and pretty much everything else. Does have to be Green Giant though - one of the very few products where I will buy branded.
Also we have tinned tomatoes - though passata is cheaper and takes up less recycling room if you buy the cartons - tinned kidney beans, flageolet beans, chickpeas, baked beans. That's it for tins apart from tuna.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 28/04/2012 22:03

I use tinned fruit a lot as we put it on porridge every day and I'd be bankrupted if we used fresh.

Never use tinned veg except tomatoes and baked beans. Is the tinned sweet corn that really sweet stuff that's often found in shop bought tuna/sweet corn sarnies?

But I love the no so sweet frozen sweet corn.

Yes! Tomatoes, beans & pulses.

Voidka · 28/04/2012 22:07

Kidney beans - I always get a bit nervous about soaking so tinned is easier.
Sweetcorn - DD loes Tuna and sweetcorn sandwiches.
Mushy Peas - DH eats about 4 cans a week.

aquashiv · 28/04/2012 22:08

My Mother would buy tinned peas and the bloody awful processed ones to boot....dear god how did I survive my childhood?

aquashiv · 28/04/2012 22:09

I buy tins of tuna is that ok?

CurrySpice · 28/04/2012 22:10

Tinned potatoes are the taste of my childhood caravan holidays Grin but I haven't had one for years maybe 35

I buy tinned sweet corn. It's nicer than frozen IMHO

GwendolineMaryLacey · 28/04/2012 22:11

My mother has tins of processed peas in her war cupboard. I've had to buy them for her sometimes. It's a pain in the arse to find a Tesco where I won't be recognised in order to do so...

LetsKateWin · 28/04/2012 22:11

I prefer tinned sweetcorn to frozen.

I also used tinned tomatoes.

I used tinned chickpeas because I'm not organised enough to soak stuff over night.

RubberDuck · 28/04/2012 22:13

Tinned creamed mushrooms makes an awesome (and stupidly cheap) pasta sauce

foreverondiet · 28/04/2012 22:26

I buy tinned sweetcorn and tomatoes (staple).

Also use tinned pulses as dried involves forward planning (soaking etc).

Can see useful for people who aren't into cooking.

BarredfromhavingStella · 28/04/2012 22:31

Kidney beans, chickpeas, butter beans, harricotts etc, mushy peas, & marrowfat peas are all lush & used regularly in my house & amazingly I do quite a lot of cooking........

Metabilis3 · 28/04/2012 22:32

Tinned chickpeas, tinned Aduki beans, tinned kidney beans, tinned ratatouille, tinned spinach (much easier to cook than frozen, much easier to eat than fresh), tinned butter beans (I can't stand them but the kids like them).

When I was a kid I used to adore tinned strawberries. They were the height of treaty luxury.
