yada yada yada. I've seen the debates on here on fresh over frozen. I get that. But who the rubbery-fuck buys tinned veg??

Was strolling around the Co-Op today and clocked a a shelf of tinned peas/carrots/potatos.

Who the fuck would eat tinned peas?? The colour is so very wrong. I can't begin to imagine what the texture is like

I buy:
chick peas
kidney beans
baked beans
tomatoes

Tinned carrots and peas are vile and overcooked. Tinned potatoes are OK in salad, but I can't remember the last time I bought some.

Value tinned sweetcorn

Mushy peas

Marrowfat peas

All very nice :)

Happypiglet · 28/04/2012 20:36

Fray Bentos pies are FAB..... But not had one since my student days.... Ditto syrup sponge in a tin... That you cook in boiling water like something from the 50's...

Sassybeast · 28/04/2012 20:37

Out and proud. Tinned sweetcorn, garden peas (not marrowfat!), kidney beans, chickpeas and those mixed beans for salads.

anychocswilldo · 28/04/2012 20:37

My dad Blush

Happypiglet · 28/04/2012 20:38

All these other food snobs will be laughing on the other side of their faces when Armageddon comes.... I will be able to love of my tinned produce for weeks....Grin

mamalovesmojitos · 28/04/2012 20:38

Yes chipping, outside UK.

Happypiglet · 28/04/2012 20:38

live off

squeakytoy · 28/04/2012 20:40

Nothing wrong with fray bentos steak and kidney pies.. again if you are working and want to put a decent filling meal on the table in a hurry, havent had time to shop etc, then they are bloody handy.

tethersend · 28/04/2012 20:43

Fray Bentos pastry is food of the Gods.

TheProvincialLady · 28/04/2012 20:44

Acceptable/nice even

Tinned tomatoes (NO vile mixed herbs/ancient tasting garlic/bits in), sweetcorn, chick peas and pulses etc (all unsalted/sugared) and tinned pineapple/apricotsin juice for cooking

Unacceptable

Marrow fat peas, asparagus, tinned fruit in syrup

Beyond the pale

Carrots, potatoes (one of the worst things I have ever eaten), peas, any kind of ready made pre cooked 'stew' or 'curry', absolutely anything with salt and sugar in it and that vile, vile offender TINNED FRUIT SALAD

I am conveniently ignoring mushy peas because although they are vile, I am partial to mint sauce flavour mushy peas on toast about once every five years. Blame my mother, she made me eat most of this stuff as a child and it was all disgusting but obviously killed off a taste bud or two.

LookAtAllTheseFucksIGive · 28/04/2012 20:44

There is bugger all wrong with tinned stuff. I buy a few staples (bar carrots as I just don't like them in any form) a few times a year. They come in handy when money is tight. You can still put a meal together with all the nutrients needed. Tinned meat produce was a shocker for me. I was at a friends when she offered me a jacket spud with chilli. I accepted, ate it and it was delicious. It turns out the chilli was tinned. I was pleasantly surprised and bought the ones she buys. I have served them up (on jackets) and no one bats an eyelid.

BabyDubsEverywhere · 28/04/2012 20:45

Oh my how did i forget about heinz syrup sponge pudding, and the toffee one, and the spotted dick and the jam sponge.... I will be sending DH to the shop pronto....i bloody love them :)

FrillyMilly · 28/04/2012 20:47

I love marrowfat peas!!

The only problem with tinned meat is it resembles pet food when you first get it out which can be off putting. Fray Bentos pies are delicious. Ive not had one for years though.

Happypiglet · 28/04/2012 20:48

baby dubs they are delicious non? Unfortunately I am not allowed them anymore as we have a gluten free DS.... Sad

Happypiglet · 28/04/2012 20:50

They must be served with tinned custard though!!! And tinned fruit salad if you want to add a healthy element!!!

HexagonalQueenOfTheSummer · 28/04/2012 20:52

I did read once that whilst tinned fruit in juice counts as a portion of fruit each day, tinned veg doesn't count as a veg portion, so I've always avoided it for that reason really. Apart from tinned sweetcorn and tinned tomatoes.

Bunbaker · 28/04/2012 20:52

A favourite of mine as a child was tinned peaches and evaporated milk.

TheArmadillo · 28/04/2012 20:53

nhs says that tinned veg counts as a veg portion same as tinned fruit.

GateGipsy · 28/04/2012 20:55

Sure what's wrong with that? The tinning process doesn't do anything to them as such. What do you use if you don't use tinned tomatoes for sauces? Sweetcorn, the Green Giant one, is really lovely. Also the petite pois peas and the garden peas. Marrowfat peas are nice but the colour is awful, and the amount of sugar in there means I won't buy them.

Also kidney beans, blackeyed peas, and other legumes.

Finally, do use the tins of potatoes to keep in the cupboard for emergencies. Easy and quick to cut those up for a quickie Spanish omlette, or to throw on a plate with a pie if you're in a rush. They taste like plastic to me but the other half likes them.

MotherOfSuburbia · 28/04/2012 20:58

Baked beans, Chopped Tomatoes, Sweetcorn, Pulses (although very impressed by people who think far enough ahead to soak dried beans/ chickpeas for hours).

We buy -

tomatoes
sweetcorn
lots of sorts of beans
green lentils
mushy peas (me)
marrowfat peas (me)
baked beans (everybody else)
grapefruit in natural juice

I've always been a bit snobby about tinned potatoes and mushrooms but on the strength of this thread I might get some to try. Don't fancy the carrots though.

The worst thing I've ever eaten from a tin was EC surplus stewed steak. I got given a free voucher for being poor. The most hilarious tinned thing I've ever seen is diet spam.

I love fray bentos pies, we used to have them on boating holidays when I was a kid. Haven't had one for years and I really want one now.

Food snobs buy tinned food too but theirs is in wanky glass jars from the 'gourmet' section.

Happypiglet · 28/04/2012 21:04

Oo and corned beef... I love corned beef.... And of course all sorts of tinned fish, tuna, salmon, sardines, mackerel etc etc
