yada yada yada. I've seen the debates on here on fresh over frozen. I get that. But who the rubbery-fuck buys tinned veg??

Was strolling around the Co-Op today and clocked a a shelf of tinned peas/carrots/potatos.

Who the fuck would eat tinned peas?? The colour is so very wrong. I can't begin to imagine what the texture is like

I love tinned peas and carrots (mixed in the tin). Also adore tinned new potatoes. Unfortunately, the rest of the family won't touch them with a barge-pole, so I never buy them. They are not the same as fresh obviously, but have their merits. Honestly.

MrsCornish · 28/04/2012 22:40

ok here goes - M&S tinned meat casseroles and curries are brilliant for camping and desparate times. DCs love them (so do I).

seeker · 28/04/2012 22:43

Tinned corn, obviously. Tomatoes, obviously. All pulses- especially chickpeas, which are so delicious straight from the tin.

But anything else, I agree. Why?

Did someone say tinned spinach was nice? I might try it- I adore spinach!

DeadRisingPies · 28/04/2012 22:46

When I was little, there was a big discussion about whether tinned vegetables were nutritionally comparable to fresh, and I think the background feeling was that they were not. I had been wondering how this died down, and what the final conclusion was. It all just seemed to peter out. Perhaps the manufacturers stong-armed the media?

TheSoggyBunny · 28/04/2012 22:47

I hated tonnes potatoes with a passion. My mum used to cool them with mince and onions. Boak. Really hated them.

Until last week when dh fried them in olive oil an butter with a little sea salt.

They were all golden and crispy and bloody loverley

MrsCornish · 28/04/2012 22:50

i use tinned pots chopped and fried crispy to make tortilla

BBQJuly · 28/04/2012 22:50

I buy tinned veg. Useful if the fresh stuff runs out or if there's not time to do the peeling, chopping etc.

blondiedollface · 28/04/2012 23:20

Always have a stock in the cupboard for 'just in case' but marrowfat peas are lovely! Use all pulses, beans, chickpeas etc on a frequent basis and of course chopped/whole tomatoes :)

Also, tinned pineapple is the BEST!!

Metabilis3 · 28/04/2012 23:20

Also, tinned tomatoes, for pasta sauce. Tinned baked beans (obvs). Tinned artichoke hearts (gorgeous). Tinned black olives.

Schools - are you in the UK? If you are, just go and buy some, they're YUM!

I don't mind pineapple and apple - but not that cocktail stuff or mandarins...

I buy tinned tomatoes, chick peas, button mushrooms and kidney beans.

I have often wondered who buys the tinned carrots etc but clearly someone does.

squeakytoy · 28/04/2012 23:55

Marrowfat peas are only nice with fish/fishfingers and chips... they are sort of a halfway between peas and mushypeas..

ICutMyFootOnOccamsRazor · 28/04/2012 23:59

I always have tinned tomotoes in, they're indispensible. Also buy tinned sweetcorn and chick peas and sometimes artichoke hearts or hearts of palm.

ChippingInLovesEasterEggs · 29/04/2012 00:00

squeakytoy that's just not true!! They are great with mash, they are great with lots of things - even on their own on toast.

Schools - buy a good quality brand of marrowfats and mushy peas :) Yum... feeling a midnight snack coming on!!

talkingnonsense · 29/04/2012 07:24

Maryz, I think tinned tuna is no good for omega 3 as they take the oil out to make fish oil supplements! Other tinned fish is fine though.

Is anyone else finding tinned a really weird word now ....tinned, canned, tinned....

Graciescotland · 29/04/2012 07:38

I buy tinned sweetcorn, I think it's better than frozen and less hassle than cooking a whole cob.

I go through loads of tinned lentils, kidney beans and tomatoes but I don't know if that counts?

PavlovtheCat · 29/04/2012 07:43

tinned sweetcorn is ace is all sorts of things.

Marrowfat peas make the best mushy peas.

tinned carrots are not actually real carrots I don't think, they are made of plastic.

Although weirdly, I quite like the tinned potatoes as they bring back lovely memories of my friend's mums cooking as she used to put them into spaghetti bolognaise. Of course on hindsight this food was actually minging, but the memories were good!

my friend adores tinned artichokes.

PavlovtheCat · 29/04/2012 07:43

oh yes, tinned tomatoes. this is staple in our cooking.

PavlovtheCat · 29/04/2012 07:46

I did not count pulses and chick peas, as they are not veg. But if we are including all things tinned, then yes to all sorts of beans and pulses, like tomatoes they are staple store cupboard food.
