yada yada yada. I've seen the debates on here on fresh over frozen. I get that. But who the rubbery-fuck buys tinned veg??

Was strolling around the Co-Op today and clocked a a shelf of tinned peas/carrots/potatos.

Who the fuck would eat tinned peas?? The colour is so very wrong. I can't begin to imagine what the texture is like

That chicken in a can looks disgusting. I don't think I could eat that even in a zombie crisis.

catinboots · 01/05/2012 11:19

Microchips are the work of the devil.

Boiling hot, floppy, greasy strips of undercooked potato

TotemPole · 01/05/2012 12:08

We found them to be ok. They weren't floppy or greasy, but I put them on a bit longer than the instructions say. Maybe they've changed the recipe since you last had them. My complaint is that there aren't many in a box.

springaroundthecorner · 03/05/2012 17:19

Is that a fact then that frozen veg have more vitamins than tinned?

Its all very well saying buy frozen but some people havent got big freezer. Tins can be shoved any old place.

catinboots · 03/05/2012 18:17

Yep something to do with the canning process nukes them apparently

Frozen is even better than fresh too as it's frozen as soon as its picked - not left hanging around in a warehouse/on a shelf for days

Just had my shopping delivered for the first time with my very first fray bentos pie!! Sad that I'm pretty excited Grin

JojoLapin · 05/05/2012 13:41

In UK: Tinned tomatoes, sweet corn and olives.

In France: same plus green beans and peas/carottes (square tins). I tried "English tinned peas and green beans" and they are vile... It is odd considering that their French counterparts are lovely...

Pinkie29 · 05/05/2012 17:53

Well what can I say pleasantly surprised with fray bentos Smile

paulapantsdown · 05/05/2012 18:31

M&S tinned stewed steak is absolutely bloody delicious.

My MIL used to arrive at ours with these lovely steak pies that DH would devour in about 5 seconds flat. When I eventually asked her how she cooked the steak to be so tasty she confessed to frozen pastry and tinned M&S steak!

This thread has inspired me re our upcoming caravan trip - its going to be stewed steak/tinned spuds/tinned peas/fray bentos pies all the way!

vincettenoir · 06/05/2012 02:41

I buy tinned broad beans, sweetcorb and beans. It's as nice as frozen

LeBOF · 06/05/2012 04:19

I eat processed marrowfat peas cold out of the tin. I love them. Tinned carrots and potatoes, however, are an abomination reserved only for the apocalypse.

Binky55 · 06/05/2012 04:55

Who doesn't buy tinned tomatoes? They're a staple for so many dishes - spag bol, Shepards pie, curries, pasta, stews etc.

I used to buy tinned pots when I was a student & fry them, lovely!

And tinned sweetcorn is way better than frozen.

Pinkie29 · 06/05/2012 09:54

I always have about 6 cans of chopped tomatoes, handiest thing ever!

slalomsuki · 06/05/2012 12:01

I bought some Waitrose sweet and sour chicken in a tin and it's great. Was supposed to be an emergency meal for the kids but they have asked for it again.

Shoot me down now

fuzzpig · 06/05/2012 16:50

I've been watching the Swallows and Amazons film for the first time in years and I just noticed that at lunchtime by the campfire there is a tin clearly labelled 'Fray Bentos'! :o

catinboots · 06/05/2012 19:06

I just had Bombay potatoes made with tinned potatoes.

I am a total convert

Fray Bentos pies have as many calories in them than in your whole weeks calorie allowance! I love tinned veg, frozen veg, any veg, am not fussy at all...

nkf · 06/05/2012 19:58

Never mind tinned veg. Who on earth buys spam?

Pinkie29 · 06/05/2012 21:05

excitedelectrons 14000 calories in a pie ? Lol impossible! Spam is devils work!! Wonder what's actually in it?!

SkinnyVanillaLatte · 06/05/2012 21:10

I get (mainly as standby's but also in case of the apocalypse Grin ):

sweetcorn
peas
potatoes
tomatoes
various types of beans and pulses
mushrooms.

To be fair the peas are shite.

Eggrules · 06/05/2012 23:37

Skinny is right.

You gotta have a zombie plan.

sunnydelight · 07/05/2012 04:28

French tinned petit pois are yum. We are total food snobs but would fill our car with these (and the "exra fin" green beans) on holiday.

aethelfleda · 07/05/2012 09:11

We sometimes buy spam... It's just luncheon meat inna tin by another name, costs more than cheap luncheon meat of course, but keeps for years and is a good sandwich standby. Plus you can show your kids the Spam sketch from Monty python whn you are going to serve it (mine loved it)...

We also have in the cupboard tinned sweetcorn, kidney beans, tomatoes, gungo peas (for Rice'N'peas), bamboo shoots, water chestnuts, baby corn cobs, chickpeas, and baked beans. I do like mushy peas with mint sauce sometimes. Most of these are used in casseroles and stirfries, or as a backup veg when I just don't have time to drag three children to the shops for extra fresh veg.

(I do think tinned potatoes are a bit weird though, they have a texture all of their own...)

slalomsuki · 07/05/2012 17:52

Another French find is the tin of chopped mushrooms in a cream sauce. They are the food of the gods.

Tin of Spinach with cream and Parmesan follow closely though also in France.
