To think that 14 miles in a car to school is ok?

It seems a long way, but that's where the school is?

Any thoughts?

More information needed, I think.

FredFredGeorge · 10/04/2012 18:50

if there are no other schools nearer, then it is what it is. If there's nearer ones, then it's pretty silly!

Shutupanddrive · 10/04/2012 18:54

Well it's up to you! What are the reasons? Better school? Nowhere nearer? Etc. need more info really

Helenagrace · 10/04/2012 18:54

DD is 10 and travels 12 miles each way each day on the school coach. It makes the school day long (hers is 7.55am - 4.45pm) but she copes. It was harder when she first started (at 8yo) but it has got easier.

For us it was brilliant school but long journey vs much less good schools and shorter journey.

scuzy · 10/04/2012 18:55

whats the alternative, home schooling? if thats the nearest school then whats the problem?

used to travel more than that one way to school.

ragged · 10/04/2012 19:04

what age? Teens okay, but not brilliant for primary school. Twisting windy roads or dual carriageway? parent driving or on the bus?

exoticfruits · 10/04/2012 19:04

I would do it if that is the best school.

wishiwasonholiday · 10/04/2012 19:06

We do 6 miles each way to school rather than 3 to nearest but takes as long to nearest as its in town and easier to park at ds' school.

dearprudence · 10/04/2012 19:08

At my (catholic) high school there were loads of buses that came in from quite a wide area - up to 14 miles away certainly.

If there's a good reason, then it's do-able, but I'd say it's not ideal, and to varying degrees depending on the age of the child and the method of transport.

As others have said - need more information.

seeker · 10/04/2012 19:08

I would be amazed if anyone lived 14 miles away from their nearest school.

If there is any alternative at all, don't do it. We live 5 miles away from ds's school, and it is often a complete nightmare.

TidyDancer · 10/04/2012 19:09

In theory I wouldn't rule that kind of journey out, but it's not ideal really, so would need a bit more information.

seeker · 10/04/2012 19:09

Dd's school is 12 miles away but she gets the bus. This is often a nightmare too. I will elaborate if required!

diabolo · 10/04/2012 19:10

If you don't mind the drive, and you want your DC's to go to that school, then it's entirely up to you. I'll be doing a 12 mile each way trip next year because that's where the school DS will be attending is. It takes 25 mins.

BBQJuly · 10/04/2012 19:13

School days will be the same but socialising will be harder if no-one else lives locally to you.

tibni · 10/04/2012 19:15

ds does more than that to his primary (SEN). The school isn't that far, 3 miles, but by the time they have done all the pick ups his journey starts at 8am for a 9am start. Ds loves transport and travel and loves the ride each day so for him it isn't an issue. When he goes to secondary the nearest SEN school will be over 14 miles away.

dd goes to the local secondary and walks the 20mins. This is the ideal option in my eyes, shorter day and local friends.

Each situation is individual.

This would be my idea if a nightmare, and I would move house to avoid it. It adds so much time onto the start and end of the day, after-school activites and meet-ups would be a nightmare, and imagine the cost of petrol for a 56 mile journey each day.

toddlerama · 10/04/2012 19:16

I did 17 miles a day when there were 2 good schools in walking distance. This one was better. My mum was a flipping saint. She drove 65 miles everyday for 13 years between me and my siblings.

MNHubbie · 10/04/2012 19:17

What kind of roads? 14 miles could be anything from a 30min round trip up to 2hrs or more depending upon speed limits and traffic.

EssentialFattyAcid · 10/04/2012 19:18

I went to school this far away and it took ages due to rush hour traffic

As a kid it was crappola

The journey was stressful and it made the whole day very long and tiring. Also my pals lived a long way away which made for a lonely childhood. The journey was a drain on my mum even though we shared travelling with other people.

I wouldn't consider a school that far away for my child - if necessary I would move house in preference.

ChunkyPickle · 10/04/2012 19:19

seeker - it's common where I'm from - primary school in the village, but a train/bus ride to get to one of the near-by towns for secondary.

I agree, it's not ideal, but what are you going to do otherwise?

StetsonsAreCool · 10/04/2012 19:20

When I first started secondary school my school was 26 miles from home. The school did provide transport though.

I agree with previous posters - more info needed.

diabolo · 10/04/2012 19:22

I should point out that I live in very rural East Anglia - there is only 1 school which provides a bus that comes anywhere near my village.

We don't all live in London or other big city where everything is within a walk / bus / tube journey. Some of us have to use cars and Shock petrol, just to work / live / shop / exist.

oldmum42 · 10/04/2012 19:29

SEEKER - you'd be amazed, actually, lots of people DO have to travel that sort of distance to their nearest school :) ! We are 11miles from our NEAREST secondary school, and kids from up to 20 miles away go to it, as their nearest, local authority option. In really rural areas, school can be much further than that.

11 miles takes me less than 20 min in the car even in "rush hour", in a city, 20mins wouldn't get you very far though, would it?
OP, I'm assuming you ARE in a city and are looking at different options, or you wouldn't be asking about the distance? More info please! :)
