Or is it because BBT is now and Friends was then? IYKWIM.

Oh and Sheldon is a fantastic character. He is obviously on the Autistic Spectrum but they never feel the need to say this, point it out or make excuses for his more anti-social behaviour. Very clever and refreshing.

Goolash · 08/04/2012 15:16

Oh wow, I didn't realize that was Blossom.

PersonalClown · 08/04/2012 15:17

A gift for the Sheldon Cooper fans in the room!!

Determined to watch BBT now! I never really got into it, which is odd as I'm very geeky. And an Aspie. I did think the episodes I saw were a bit 'obvious' and yes as somebody else said I assumed there was quite a lot of stereotyping which put me off, so it's nice to read that it actually turns it on its head - will definitely give it a go! Can't find it on the library catalogue though :(

I do love Friends, always will, it's comforting and one of my go-to DVDs IYSWIM.

Mrsjay · 08/04/2012 15:33

A bit like Star Trek back in the day, when many of the African American community used to tune in whether they liked sci fi or not. Just for the chance to see a black character who wasn't a stereotype.

CinnabarRed · 08/04/2012 15:46

What's the Ross subtext?

Love TBBT beyond all measure.

PersonalClown · 08/04/2012 15:48

I want one of these just so I can do the buzzer at people!

Sparklingbrook · 08/04/2012 15:51

I think the Ross thing is that if you delve into the character and actually analyse him he is not nice at all. he treats women badly and is v controlling? Is that right?

OP posts:
PersonalClown · 08/04/2012 15:52

The Ross subtext is that when you look back on the series and 'Ross' as a whole, he's actually quite a Emotionally Abusive character.

I hated him from the beginning with the whole 'We were on a break' shit. And the whole he was allowed to date but would get insanely jealous and controlling if she showed interest in anyone bollocks.

Mrsjay · 08/04/2012 15:54

Ross had been obsessed with rachel since they were teens It wasnt love it was obsession oh and his wife was a lesbian i think that made him a tad insecure , I can say ive never really thought about the ins and puts of the characters before Hmm

hatesponge · 08/04/2012 15:56

I love BBT. It reminds me of my uni days, I was a much less attractive Penny with lots of slightly geeky, incredibly intelligent, science student male friends. All of whom fancied me and none of whom I was in any way interested in (I only wanted rugby players and didn't think my friends were cool/attractive enough to date Blush).

Slightly wish BBT had been on then, I might have seen them in a different - and more positive- light!

CinnabarRed · 08/04/2012 15:57

Is that right? I never watched Friends on a regular basis, and didn't pick it up from the episodes I did watch. Ross was my least favourite character, but I quite like David Schwimmer - wonder how he feels about the character of Ross.

hatesponge · 08/04/2012 15:58

The whole Ross subtext thing when I first read it made me see Friends in an entirely different light, I can't ever enjoy watching it now. All his abusive, controlling, behaviours excused because he loves her and really they're meant to be together Hmm

jenfraggle · 08/04/2012 16:00

YANBU, BBT is so much better than Friends.

Current series is series 6. I've got series 1-4 on dvd and series 5 recorded on the digibox waiting to be deleted when the next dvd comes out. I've been raving about how great it is for ages, my friend has just got around to see what I was on about and now she's hooked and has borrowed all my dvds :)

Leonard is very sexy but Johnny Galecki does nothing for me, it's all about the glasses.

Sparklingbrook · 08/04/2012 16:01

I still think of him and Sarah Gilbert in Roseanne jenfraggle. Grin

I love The Big Bang Theory! Mayim Balik who plays Amy Farrah Fowler is a really interesting person to follow on Twitter. She's recently written a book on attachment parenting, and is a real life neuroscientist.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 08/04/2012 16:03

I never got Friends, I don't care about any of the characters TBH.
But with BBT , it's impossible not to. They are so awkard in their own way.
Painfully clever but so devoid of social graces.

And I still love Howards voice Blush

CinnabarRed · 08/04/2012 16:04

I was also uncomfortable with the whole Monica-used-to-be-fat-let's-laugh-at-Monica thing.
