I keep putting classic 80s films on only to find out that she's never seen them! [bushock]

Today's film is the karate kid, a masterpiece and essential viewing for anyone of my generation. It's so good that they remade it for this generation to enjoy!

DW has also missed out on the gremlins films! They're brilliant, but she was tragically deprived of them for multiple Christmases [busad]

I think her parents acted cruelly and have denied her her heritage as a child of the 80s.

Nope, don't even think Ive seen a snippet of it.

I have a DH who has a very annoying catchphrase of 'name that film' after saying a quote and I look very blankly, say "I don't know" and he insists I MUST know it. Then he tells me the film, I say I havent seen it and he argues the point with me.....erm, I actually havent seen it. I wouldn't forget.

SillyBeardyDaddyman · 06/04/2012 21:31

LST I commend your enthusiasm for awesomeness [bugrin]

Ferris Bullers Day off is definitely NOT shit.

It's absolute genius.

peeriebear · 06/04/2012 21:32

I love Lost Boys. It's the only modern vampire film I can tolerate. I find 99% of vampire stories/films utterly risible.

FashionEaster · 06/04/2012 21:33
sung by phil oakey

it seemed so technologically advanced, an era of ghettoblasters, first home pcs, phones like bricks, batwing jumpers and guys in eyeliner.

Duckypoohs · 06/04/2012 21:33

Wtf is loveboat? I thought it was some kind of naff American sitcom, although I must admit I have never sat through star wars or any bond film, yawnorama.

SillyBeardyDaddyman · 06/04/2012 21:35

Lost boys started the trend for vampires being "cool" and I therefore despise it! It made vamps lame and they stopped being scary!

I may have got the name wrong (shows how little I know)...will google and check I got it right. Some naff movie that MIL adored and forced her kids to watch once a month, hence why they think it's normal.

Poor DH growing up in a house full of women, no wonder he has bizarre movie tastes.

FairlyDinkum · 06/04/2012 21:36

I have seen (nearly) every one of these films but you need to be born in the 70s, not the 80s. You had to be an older kid/teenager to enjoy them at the time.

That said,
Lost Boys - great movie. Gremlins - not so much.
Breakfast Club - who was it that said this was a crap movie. Wash your mouth out!
Er - Bigfoot and the Hendersons? Not exactly a 80s classic.

These are the best 80s films
Breakfast Club
Pretty in Pink
Sixteen Candles
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Valley Girl (cheesy but I like it!)
Some Kind of Wonderful
Can't Buy me Love (Dr McDreamy before THE NOSE JOB)

More a romance gal, me.

BelleDameSansMerci · 06/04/2012 21:37

What about Risky Business; Pretty in Pink; Weird Science; etc?

And, my fave 80s film [bublush], Desperately Seeking Susan...

FairlyDinkum · 06/04/2012 21:38

Oh, and
'Breakdance II - Electric Boogaloo!'
Grin

SuePurblybiltFromChocolate · 06/04/2012 21:39

Blimey, I may need to say it again. I am saying that if you watch these films for the first time as an adult, now in 2012, they are crap. But I know that if you watched them at the time they are not - because I love other 80s films that I DID see at the time.

Loveboat is a musical, no? Or have I made that up? Or were you going more 70s and thinking Love Story ?

FairlyDinkum · 06/04/2012 21:41

Yes, yes - you must watch Breakfast Club again! My DH watched it for the first time a couple of years back and really liked it.
True what you are saying for a lot of films though.

SillyBeardyDaddyman · 06/04/2012 21:41

Definite yes to weird science! But that might be because I'm a man...

And the breakfast club is an amazing film ruined only by that stupid arm raise at the end

OP posts:
Duckypoohs · 06/04/2012 21:41

I loved explorers, well the ending was a bit pants but I loved the bit where they make the ship from a waltzer. I also loved The Monster Squad, best 80's film ever, well apart from Labyrinth, who can forget that Grin.

DesperatelySeekingBunnies · 06/04/2012 21:43

I didn't watch alot of the 80's movies til recently. I was born in 86 though so missed alot of them anyway. DP who was born in the 70's was shocked and appalled I hadn't seen Goonies, The Labrynth and The Karate Kid.

On a happier note, DD (4.6) watched Gremlins 1 and 2 and loved them both. She also liked E.T and The Never Ending Story. I guess she's more cultured than me [bugrin]

FairlyDinkum · 06/04/2012 21:43

I love the arm raise!

'Don't you ... forget about me'.

SuePurblybiltFromChocolate · 06/04/2012 21:43

ooooo Labyrinth.
I also have an oddly soft spot for Bugsy Malone [bublush]

duckdodgers · 06/04/2012 21:43

sue "Never sat through a whole James Bond."

You are not deprived - just extremely lucky

FairlyDinkum · 06/04/2012 21:45

Labyrinth - David Bowie in very tight tights. Dangerous sexual energy.
I was swooning.

SillyBeardyDaddyman · 06/04/2012 21:45

Bugsy Malone is the greatest musical ever! Even better than rocky horror (and I love that!)

OP posts:
SuePurblybiltFromChocolate · 06/04/2012 21:46

Love Rocky too, (NOT Rocky 2!), does that count as 80s? I'm doing better than I thought then.

Duck - poor you [bugrin]. They're so long.

SillyBeardyDaddyman · 06/04/2012 21:49

You remind me of the babe...

OP posts:
duckdodgers · 06/04/2012 21:55

SillyBeardyDaddyman Alas I had not heard of Mac and Me but my film obsessed DH assures me you are right!

FairlyDinkum I love the Breakfast Club to! but Im a bit biased as I am a huge Simple Minds fan

duckdodgers · 06/04/2012 22:02

Thanks sue for feeling my pain [bugrin]

After being dragged along going to the cinema to see Die Another Day I am now secure enough in my marriage to say "enough is enough"......he was went to see every one since alone like Johnny no mates.
