To think slippers are for old people?

lesley33 · 20/03/2012 13:35

I am 47. When I was younger no-one wore slippers once they were no longer kids. Suddenly in the last 5 years all my friends have slippers. Some of them even bring them when they visit friends so as be "more comfortable". FFS thats what my gran did when she is in her 70's and 80's!

Both DP and I are united on this. Slippers are for old people. We are not old and so thus will NOT have slippers.

So AIBU

(And I am being serious. Both DP and I do think this).

How very dare you.

Slippers are the epitome of cool and comfort.

I bloody love 'em! OH agrees with you though. He is clearly a fool

corriefan · 20/03/2012 19:59

I never used to wear slippers, I think because my parents never did, they wore shoes or bare feet; taking shoes off at the door was not done. I am a slipper convert though, I so wish I'd started earlier, there's nothing like the cosiness! I did laugh when my friend bought hers round the other day though. I even get pyjamas on in the evening sonetimes, comfort is underrated!

CrystalQueen · 20/03/2012 20:03

Slippers, pah! What you need is an electric blanket. DH resisted for years on age-related grounds.

lesley33 · 20/03/2012 20:04

I do have some slipper wearing friends who tell me how they love their electric blanket. God my friends are getting old aren't they!

I reckon I must be old then, and I am also 47: I love my slippers! I would be cold without them and I won't wear outdoor shoes in the house. They are knee-high sheepskin boots which, style-wise (paradoxically) I wouldn't be seen dead in out of doors!

Brew as no slipper emoticon.

ooer · 20/03/2012 20:08

And also I have no electric blanket but rely on a hot water bottle ... do I win some sort of prize ...?

corriefan · 20/03/2012 20:12

Oh god yes the electric blanket... Heavenly!

garlicbutter · 20/03/2012 20:14

Yes, you do, ooer. Come and stand on the Old Gimmer Award plinth with me, clutching our hotties as we accept our prize slippers.

These are for you Thanks Please note, they're planted as Cut Flowers Are Such A Waste Wink

garlicbutter · 20/03/2012 20:15

I reeeeally want one of those sheepskin electric blankets! And possibly some sheepskin electric slippers, and a sheepskin electric wrap ...

garlicbutter · 20/03/2012 20:17

.. I am 57, by the way, not 97 Blush

MimsieD · 20/03/2012 20:21

YABVU! For me sheepskin slippers are ESSENTIAL! (tho mine are rather tatty now and the other day my MIL asked if the mice had got them Blush they hadn't - I've just walked through them due to almost continuous use - I'm hard on footwear - don't get DH started on that one!!!). And i'm not quite yet thirty.

I would also like to throw into the mix that Uggs are apparently just Australian slippers. Australians think it very strange to see us all walking around outside in slippers. I don't care tho - I think outdoor slippers is a GREAT idea! mmmm sheepskin

I should also mention DH and I LOVE our leccie blankie too - mmm toastie (tho he doesn't wear slippers - he does however wear "lounge-wear" from fatface tee hee!)

ooer · 20/03/2012 20:22

Why, thank you, garlic!

corriefan · 20/03/2012 20:24

Hmm my cardie is starting to feel itchy and my bra too tight after reading all this, I feel pjs and dressing gown coming on!

lesley33 · 20/03/2012 20:25

Fffs - You are all so old!

Doitnicelyplease · 20/03/2012 20:29

Another vote for slippers, I have always worn slippers in the house (flip flops in the summer), we have cold slate tile and wooden floors and I always have cold feet/poor circulation (I am only in my 30s) so need slippers and socks on nearly all the time.

I don't think I would be as bothered if we had carpet downstairs.

I always have cute ballet shoe type ones not big clumpy things though.

I also sit with a cozy blanket on my knees in the evening too, now that is old ladyish! I just hate being cold, but also hate wearing bulky clothing [hmmm]

shewhowines · 20/03/2012 20:37

Just be thankful lesley we are only just not old enough for the free council slippers that zuzu linked to. They're a perfect example of our youth and demonstrate exactly why YANBU.

lesley33 · 20/03/2012 20:46

I know....its horrific that once you get to 50 you are considered old enough for all sorts of council initiatives aimed at the elderly Sad

aquashiv · 20/03/2012 20:49

A life without slippers - how bizarre? Nothing like getting himself to get my slippers and my p ipe after a hard days slog. (The pipe is lie)
Why would you not wear slippers?

MyLittleMiracle · 20/03/2012 20:51

I love my playboy bunny slippers, and i am 23, they keep my feet warm and i think they are very sexy, (so long as i am not wearing absolutely anything else!)

GrimmaTheNome · 20/03/2012 20:51

Oh FFS. I'm 51 and have recently ordered (with no help from the council) some footwear designed to combine warmth with excellent grip. A pair of wetsuit boots (and a full length wetsuit).

Petrean · 20/03/2012 20:54

I don't do slippers at all... IMO nothing is more comfortable than bare feet. DH on the other hand is positively old man about slippers to the extent he says 'aaahhhhh' when he puts them on as soon as he gets up in the morning or gets in from work. I really don't get it.

So in my humble opinion YANBU... Slippers are for old people and people older than their years (like my 35 75 year old DH).

pepperrabbit · 20/03/2012 20:54

I've worn slippers ever since I came downstairs one morning and trod on a frogs eyeball the cat had brought in.
Currently we can't afford flooring in our new extension so it's bare screed, slippers are compulsory as it's costing a fortune in socks.
Grin
I miss them when I go to people's houses - can't quite bring myself to take them with me yet.

whoputmeincharge · 20/03/2012 20:57

I'm in my 30s for another six months and YADNBU.

They are for old ladies. My Gran has them and when my Mum turned sixty she fell over to the dark side and now brings them over when she stays along with teatree shampoo so she doesn't get nits.

I have a ceramic floor, a cold house, no curtains but I still won't give in. Bare feet and running quickly across the kitchen floor to make a cup of tea are a small price to pay for youth.

Minimammoth · 20/03/2012 21:01

Tch tch you'll all end up with bladder problems (according to my mum) so wear your slippers. Have worn them all my life ( not the same pair obviously) am v. Old though. Shuffles off to fill hot water bottle.

fluffypillow · 20/03/2012 21:10

YABU. I even take mine on holiday :)
