To think slippers are for old people?

I am 47. When I was younger no-one wore slippers once they were no longer kids. Suddenly in the last 5 years all my friends have slippers. Some of them even bring them when they visit friends so as be "more comfortable". FFS thats what my gran did when she is in her 70's and 80's!

Both DP and I are united on this. Slippers are for old people. We are not old and so thus will NOT have slippers.

So AIBU

(And I am being serious. Both DP and I do think this).

CMOTDibbler · 20/03/2012 13:46

My dh has been told by his orthopaedic surgeon to not walk barefoot, so wears slippers at home and if at someones house for any length of time.

yabu
I wear slippers (birkenstocks) because after a broken foot I cannot walk barefoot for long without pain. plus I like warm feet.
and my german mother had it drilled into me that I will die of an uti if I don't

ZuzuBailey · 20/03/2012 13:48

I've always had slippers too but I'm sure I'm much older than you OP.

Re the taking of slippers to other people's houses, lots of people like visitors to remove shoes at the door, so what are you to do, walk about in bare feet? I hate doing that so I do take my slippers with me if I'm visiting friends & family. I wouldn't inflict my buniony feet on anyone.

Astronaut79 · 20/03/2012 13:48

yabu. I love my slippers.

Got carpet all over the house, but my feet get cold. Besides, if you buy cheap new ones regularly, they never lose that squishy softness.

Won't wear them upstairs though - slippers kill. Fact.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 20/03/2012 13:48

Hmm so the choice would be cold feet or warm feet.
I'll go with warm feet thanks.
And I'm not old.
much

LieInsAreRarerThanTigers · 20/03/2012 13:48

Oh no this might turn into another shoes on/shoes off debate! Shock
We have a mixture of creamish/pale beige carpet and laminate flooring. So I always put my slippers on when I come in. OK I am over 40 but I have always done this since we moved into pale carpet land. Before that just used to keep my shoes on indoors.

TheMoistWorldOfSeptimusQuench · 20/03/2012 13:49

YA so NBU.
I have either bare feet or keep my boots on, and I don't give a toss about micro-bacteria and dirt on the floor, as I don't eat my dinner off the floor.
Most of the people I know's slippers look really tatty and minging as well although I'm sure there are some lovely ones adorning MNetters feet Wink

pumpkinsweetie · 20/03/2012 13:49

Up to u whether u wanna wear them or not. I love my slippers especially wear them in kitchen where floor is stone cold. Im in my twenties i aint old so yes YABU. But id like to point out wearing them in the street is not ok lol (lots of peeps do in my area) Blush

lesley33 · 20/03/2012 13:49

Zuzu - People bring slippers to our house though where we all wear shoes indoor. They tell me it is because they are more comfortable in slippers. Not because I would make them go barefoot.

OP posts:
LieInsAreRarerThanTigers · 20/03/2012 13:50

Oh and they do get smelly so I have about 3 cheap pairs and wash them every few weeks.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 20/03/2012 13:50

And also do your children never leave pieces of lego or those fucking shleich animals littered about the floor.
To stand on one of those fuckers barefoot is not good.
Not good at all.

Laambkins · 20/03/2012 13:50

I'm 30 and I love slippers and have done for years.

These days comfy is cool Grin

Beamur · 20/03/2012 13:50

I love being barefoot, but living in a house without carpet (apart from the stairs) means in the winter my feet get very cold. So I wear slippers. I don't take them to other peoples houses though (although I might take a pair of slipper socks just in case...)

2ombie5layer · 20/03/2012 13:51

I think they do, they definately do at christmas but I get mine from Asda There are lots aimed at younger than old people. Dont forget there are different styles of slipper now and not all of them are for old people. I wouldnt wear old lady ones, but DH who is younger than me does wear old man slippers.

blackoutthesun · 20/03/2012 13:51

i'm half your age Grin and i love my slippers

IamtheSnorkMaiden · 20/03/2012 13:52

YABU - slippers are fab. Yeah they look crap, but they are soooo comfy. I'm 34 and get a new pair for Christmas every year. Always wear them when I'm home. Never take them to other people's houses though, that's just sad.

peeriebear · 20/03/2012 13:52

I have always had slippers. Our childhood house only had a fire in the living room, and single pane glass windows till I was about 10, so brrrrrrrrrr.
Now I just like having warm feet. I don't like walking on cold wood floor or laminate, it's so cold and unfriendly! And wearing shoes indoors all the time is just odd IMO :)

Voidka · 20/03/2012 13:53

Slipper are great
I am 20 years younger than you.
YABU.

2ombie5layer · 20/03/2012 13:53

Talking of standing on things, the most painful thing to stand on in bare feet has to be an upturned plug ow ow ow and just ow
