To think slippers are for old people?

I am 47. When I was younger no-one wore slippers once they were no longer kids. Suddenly in the last 5 years all my friends have slippers. Some of them even bring them when they visit friends so as be "more comfortable". FFS thats what my gran did when she is in her 70's and 80's!

Both DP and I are united on this. Slippers are for old people. We are not old and so thus will NOT have slippers.

So AIBU

(And I am being serious. Both DP and I do think this).

You take your outdoor coat off when you go inside, so why not take off your outdoor shoes, which are probably dirty anyway.

I was brought up in a "slippers" house and have always had slippers (or espadrilles) for indoor wear. Clumping about in outdoor shoes all the time just seems wrong, as does walking about in socks or barefoot, though I don't take slippers to other people's houses as this just seems presumptuos.

I'm 47 as well. 1964 was obviously a good year.

BarbarianMum · 20/03/2012 13:53

I used to think like that OP - until I moved from my lovely, warm new build flat to a bloody freezing 1930s semi.

Now I think that slippers are for people that live in temperate climates and can't afford underfloor heating.

Peetle · 20/03/2012 13:54

or even "presumptuous".

thegreylady · 20/03/2012 13:55

I am old[68 today :)]
I have furry slippers
towelling slippers
felt boot slippers
velvet wedge slippers
I love slippers!
My dd is 37 and I have d-i-ls aged 38 ,40 and 41 and all ask for slippers for Christmas-nice ones from Moshulu
My dh being 75 wears slippers but so do my son, step sons and sons in law.

Yeah, old people slippers are rubbish. THey're more like a velvet shoe aren't they? THey also remind me of my gran - blue old lady slippers and a blue check tabard to do the housework!

I have indoor slippers and outdoor slippers which are kept by the back door.

BeckyBrandonNeeBloomwood · 20/03/2012 13:55

YABVU - I am 26 and my slippers are one of my favourite things, in fact, I just cant understand why or how anyone could not wear slippers - dont your feet get cold? I also now take mine if I am visiting a family member for more than a few hours. If I thought I wouldnt be laughed at, I would also bring them into work and wear them at my desk.

YABU. Slippers are comfy and keep your feet warm, what's not to like? I'm 30, so don't agree they're just for old people!

I do go barefoot indoors when it's very warm, but most of the time I love my slippers. It wouldn't occur to me to wear outdoor shoes in the house, that sounds a bit odd.

OTheHugeManatee · 20/03/2012 13:57

YABU. I'm 33 and slippered. Though they are not old lady slippers Grin

lesley33 · 20/03/2012 13:57

Happy birthday thegreyoldlady.

Sorry Becky, I would so laugh at you if I worked with you and you brought in your slippers.

I have always worn them-not old lady ones though.

BarbarianMum · 20/03/2012 13:58

And forget old lady slippers. I have half a sheep on each foot.

ArielNonBio · 20/03/2012 14:00

YABU.

Slippers are for people who get cold feet.

Honestly!

lesley33 · 20/03/2012 14:00

Oh no "fun" slippers are even worse than old lady slippers.

I recently purchased some new slippers, Dd ran and grabbed my old ones asking if she could have them Confused, when I asked why she said for her dressing up box for when she wanted to pretend to be an old woman, so she's one person who agrees with you.

I however have always worn slippers and always lived in drafty wooden floored houses even as a child. So YABU.

Ephiny · 20/03/2012 14:01

(I'm not precious about keeping the carpets/floors in pristine condition btw, that would be a bit futile as we have two big dogs. Just surely it's nicer and more comfy to take your shoes off when you get home. Do what you like in your own house though!)

hermionestranger · 20/03/2012 14:02

Yabvvvu and I am 31.

My slippers are granny sheepskin.

JasperJohns · 20/03/2012 14:04

I wear Uggs as slippers in the winter.

I can't abide actual slippers. My dh wore them when we first met Blush, despite this, I still married him but the slippers are a distant memory.

Funtimewincies · 20/03/2012 14:04

I have dc.
They have Lego.
I have slippers.

QED Grin.

thegreylady · 20/03/2012 14:05

thanks for birthday wishes :)

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 20/03/2012 14:05

Happy Birthday thegreylady.
My slippers are beaded and sequinned, but I only wear them with dressing gown. Otherwise shoes/boots.

MardyArsedMidlander · 20/03/2012 14:05

UABVVVVVU.

I have freezing cold feet, and have just paid to have my carpets cleaned. I'd make the cats wear slippers if I could.

I started when I used to live in Bosnia- and not wearing slippers there is seen as bizarre and dangerous as standing in a howling gale and poring cold water over yourself.

crashdoll · 20/03/2012 14:05

YABVU. Slippers are amazing. Whenever I go to a friend's house, they are almost always wearing slippers. Most young people I know wear young people's slippers not old person slippers.

I've said slippers a lot in those few sentences. If you say slippers over and over, it begins to sound a tad strange.

ComposHat · 20/03/2012 14:07

I wear them all the time on my flat and I'm in my early 30s and have done for years. Homies do some pretty snazzy non- fogey slippers.

WilsonFrickett · 20/03/2012 14:08

Oh no no no no noooo, I wouldn't take my slippers to work. That would be wrong and they don't match my suit...
