i was on a family day out on a steam train and on the way home an infirm old man got on with his carer. she left shortly after and he was on his own in his wheelchair with me and my dh and dc's. this journey was about an hour long and ds being cranky started to cry. and the old man turned to him and shouted at him to be quiet boy. at this i told him to shut the fuck up and a list of words i cant mention here. dh backed me up although i was telling a friend later she said he was ok too this as he was old, we are now not speaking cause of this. AIBU for doing that to an elderly person.

Grin @ the thought of the OP saying "I beg your pardon"

Chandon · 19/03/2012 09:48

I repeat what was said earlier:

NO one talks to me or my family like that.

Double standards, don't you think. Two wrongs don't make a right.

You were verbally abusive on public transport, to an old man, on his own. You were accompanied by your husband.

He was probably physically intimidated by you.

You have no bloody right to treat people like that on public transport, or in any public place!

ChaosTrulyReigns · 19/03/2012 09:49

I really am struggling here.

Which words can't be mentioned on MN?

Confused
JaneB1rkin · 19/03/2012 09:49

OP, I think the old man sounds incredibly rude BUT I don't think you were reasonable to swear at him.

There's just absolutely no need to swear at people like that. Why not just say 'please don't be so rude'.

People who say 'No one disrespects my family' sound like they have been brought up to be on the defensive all the time, which tbh is really unpleasant and can give rise to outbursts such as the one you had on the train.

I've never felt that 'on guard' about being possibly disrespected so if it had happened to my family, I'd have been too syrprised to say anything much. And if I had it would have been polite. By giving him an earful of abuse you just showed him that he was right all along about your family.

Bucharest · 19/03/2012 09:50

...and this old man actually said "be quiet boy". What, was he channelling the ghost of Captain Mainwaring or something?

Did he have twiddly moustaches and a big stick under his arm? shame hedidn'tuse it on thelot of you

Hebiegebies · 19/03/2012 09:50

Elderly read negative press about younger people, newspapers are full of them being rude and aggressive. You have just proved them right OP!

99 % of parents are wonderful polite people, but you've just proved to this man that the papers are true. Thank you (sarcasm)

That man's carer may hav been looking after another person too, or just needed to sit dwn after a very demanding day. Did you or your DH offer her a seat? You say the train was full.

That man may have been one of those very brave men who defended our country and our freedom in WW 2

I don't think I need go on but

Grin @ Bucharest

Helenfellows33 · 19/03/2012 09:51

it was after floggingmolly,

i didnt plan for this to happen, so how can people say I ruined his day. children cry its not like i can wave a magic wand and stop him instantly. if the old guy hadnt shouted at ds this would not be an issue.

i dont normally swear. and no im not kerry katona either, but when someone threatens my family i will say some thing. it just happened to be x rated. im sure that your all angels who dont swear EVER.

So he threatened your son now? Confused

catgirl1976 · 19/03/2012 09:53

I certainly don't swear at people, in public, in front of children.

squeakytoy · 19/03/2012 09:53

not a new poster, so doubt it is a wind up...

OPs "cranky" child was ruining a trip for a disabled old man who had probably been looking forwards to his day out.

no-one talks to me and my family like that

I haven't read the whole thread but that choice bit of self-justification jumped out at me. Tbh it's the kind of thing people say to try and excuse the most shockingly bad behaviour.

You should try and engage your brain before you unleash a torrent of abuse on an elderly person (in a wheelchair, for pity's sake). Yes, the old man might well have had dementia, as others have said, and not have conscious control of what he was saying. Whatever, you could have behaved with dignity and self-control in taking issue with him.

You need to grow up.

Helenfellows33 · 19/03/2012 09:53

for those who want to know what i actually said was "why don't you shut the fuck up you old git"

OP posts:
TheVermiciousKnid · 19/03/2012 09:54

i didnt plan for this to happen, so how can people say I ruined his day

You didn't have to plan it to ruin his day. You did it, that was enough.

Good grief. I really hope this is in fact a wind up.

ChaosTrulyReigns · 19/03/2012 09:54

Oh I might have worked it out.

Was it a racist, disabilist, homophobic rant OP?

Those words ain't welcome on MN.

Tut. Tut.

ViviPru · 19/03/2012 09:54

Are you sure you didn't turn round and say that?

Bucharest · 19/03/2012 09:55

How did he threaten your family?

I'm no angel, but I certainly don't swear in front of children or elderly men with twiddly moustache.

squeakytoy · 19/03/2012 09:55

but when someone threatens my family i will say some thing
