i was on a family day out on a steam train and on the way home an infirm old man got on with his carer. she left shortly after and he was on his own in his wheelchair with me and my dh and dc's. this journey was about an hour long and ds being cranky started to cry. and the old man turned to him and shouted at him to be quiet boy. at this i told him to shut the fuck up and a list of words i cant mention here. dh backed me up although i was telling a friend later she said he was ok too this as he was old, we are now not speaking cause of this. AIBU for doing that to an elderly person.

No- you clearly hated this behavior, so why do you use it yourself? You were much ruder than him. Why don't you focus on comforting your son instead of snapping at a man who was probably completely on edge and might have been feeling jumpy already.

Fecklessdizzy · 19/03/2012 20:43

You and your family sound like a real bunch of charmers ... Hmm

Stratters · 19/03/2012 20:55

I do love a unanimous AIBU. Such a rare, yet satisfying animal.

treadwarily · 19/03/2012 21:32

Do you think this is the underclass alluded in another thread?

treadwarily · 19/03/2012 21:32

to

JasperJohns · 19/03/2012 21:40

OP very undignified, very rude behaviour on your part. You should be, at least, moderately ashamed. I think 'shut the fuck up' is just vile.

I think you'd feel much less aggrieved had you risen above it, and ignored the man's ranting.

ilovesooty · 19/03/2012 22:19

Gobby common little fishwife is what you doubtless sounded like and you and your husband are cowards as well. I bet you got a real kick out of bullying someone more vulnerable than you are.

Salmotrutta · 19/03/2012 22:31
Shock

"Be quiet boy" versus your delightful turn of phrase. Hmm

Hmm, let me think ... YABU.

And foul-mouthed.

ilovesooty · 19/03/2012 23:32

*HelenFellowes33 - if you behave like this, and use this sort of language in front of your child, he WILL learn to do the same.

Do you really want to be called into school, in a few years time, to learn that your child has told the teacher to 'Shut the fuck up, you old git', because the teacher has told him off in class?*

She probably won't be bothered. Or, on the other hand, she might react like a parent of a pupil in my class did once.

"What have I fucking told you about swearing at the fucking teachers? Just you fucking wait till I fucking get you home!"

ImperialBlether · 19/03/2012 23:42

It's a joke thread, though, isn't it?

She couldn't possibly think she was going to get anyone agreeing with her here.

fortyplus · 20/03/2012 01:51

Someone please tell me that the OP is laughing her head off after whipping everyone up into a frenzy with this joke thread.

Because if it's for real then I'm saddened that someone so obnoxious is setting such a disgusting example to her own poor child and seeking to justify her terrible behaviour to an old disabled man in front of other people's children.

Totally shameful if it's true.

iscream · 20/03/2012 06:06

Sometimes a person doesn't always see things right away, but I sense OP has taken it in. Nobody wants their kid shouted at by a stranger, and some people have more impulse control, some have to learn it.

ameliagrey · 20/03/2012 07:09

you ABU unreasonable to do that to anyone - foul mouthed woman. what an example to set your child.

Tw1gl3t · 20/03/2012 07:59

For future reference, the correct response is: "I'm sorry the little one is distrubing you, would you like one of us to go and get your carer so you can move to a quieter carriage?"

Even if you think he's being unreasonable. Really.

ameliagrey · 20/03/2012 08:01

When I was on the train 2 days ago, a babe in arms started bawling. The family had another child with them, but the father took the bawling baby and stood in the train doorway so it was as far out of earshot from all of us as possible.

That's common sense and courtesy. maybe you should develop some.

IHeartOldYork · 20/03/2012 08:09

"...i told him to shut the fuck up and a list of words i cant mention here."

When relaying the event and not intending to cause offence to anyone you couldn't possibly repeat the foul language you used. Absolutely fine for your children (and any other children present) to hear it though. :(

minesawhitewine · 20/03/2012 08:12

OP - come out, come out, wherever you are ............

QuintessentialyHollow · 20/03/2012 08:37

Yes, indeed Stratters. Wink

This thread has been a rejuvenating tidewave for many of us. We have been justified in hoisting our judgey-pants not just up to our ears, but beyond our heads! How refreshing!

Mnhq should pay somebody to post a genius op like this on a quarterly basis, just so that we can experience this cathartic moment.

In fact, I am sure they could tie it in with a special product placement, involving Alton Towers, Mothercare, British Steam Engine Association, Leeds Castle, the scope is GARGANTUAN!

catgirl1976 · 20/03/2012 08:57

I'll start Quint :)

i was on a family day out at legoland and on the way home a blind, elderly nun joined the queue with her carer. she left shortly after and she was on her own with me and my dh and dc's. this queue was about an hour long and ds being cranky started to cry. and the blind. eldery nun turned to him and soffered him a sweetie. at this i told her to go fuck herself and then i beat her guide dog puppy to death with a club. dh backed me up although i was telling a friend later she said he was ok too this as she was an old, blind nun we are now not speaking cause of this. AIBU for doing that to a nun and a really cute puppy.?

After all, no one threatens my faaahhhhmilly like that

ArielNonBio · 20/03/2012 09:03

GrinGrinGrin

Gosh. That is disgusting. You should be ashamed of yourself.

ClaireFromWork · 20/03/2012 09:03

catgirl YANBU tho. She tried to poison your child with sugar FFS. And the puppy was too cute. You did the right thing.

QuintessentialyHollow · 20/03/2012 09:07

That was really naughty of you catgirl.

2 points - for Legoland and the Church! Hurra! Mnhq can bill them both! Grin
