To think a bottle of wine is a LOT to drink for 1 person?

This comes out of a discussion with a frind who I saw on Saturday morning. When we talked about what we were going to do that weekend it came up that she was planning to drink a bottle of wine to herself that evening. When I commented that this was a lot, she said she regularly drank a bottle of wine.

So AIBU in thinking this is a lot for someone to drink in 1 night?

That is a lot. It takes me 3 weeks to drink a bottle of wine. She's got a bit of a problem if she thinks that's OK.

Sparklingbrook · 12/03/2012 19:11

It would be too much for me. Not wise from a health point of view either.

Methe · 12/03/2012 19:12

3 glasses of wine in an evening occasionally is absolutely fine.

It's when it's every night it's a bit much.

TattyDevine · 12/03/2012 19:13

Hahahaha.

SparkyMcSparrow · 12/03/2012 19:13

I manage it too.

I'm not a big drinker, only once in a while. Tis only 3 glasse's. And enough to get me happily pissed!

hardboiledpossum · 12/03/2012 19:13

When I go out with friends I often drink a bottle of wine to myself over the evening but I do feel fairly drunk and would not do this regularly.

BrianCoxHasScaryHair · 12/03/2012 19:13

I regularly drink a bottle of wine in 1 night (well, each Friday or Saturday)

Doesn't always get me pissed, occasionally does, not to the point of falling down though - just fuzzy, happy, merry.

I know of couples who will do a box of wine between them in a night (I'd be dead after that much alcohol)

YABU to think it's a lot for 1 night, but if they were doing it every night YANBU.

Debeez · 12/03/2012 19:13

Not unreasonable. That's a lot. I'm a lightweight too and glad about it :D

SaraSidle · 12/03/2012 19:14

It's about once a fortnight for me, but I can only drink a full bottle if it's ice cold, so not red wine!

SauvignonBlanche · 12/03/2012 19:14

Just the one bottle? Confused

ToothbrushThief · 12/03/2012 19:14

It's a lot.

I'd question the a) intention and b) frequency

Why plan to do that? Surely it's something that happens when socialising ?
How often does she feel the need to 'plan' it?

Sparklingbrook · 12/03/2012 19:15

Perhaps it's only one glass because she has one of these Grin

ButWhyIsTheGinGone · 12/03/2012 19:15

I have been known to drink a bottle of wine in an evening. It's not a lot. If I were doing it every night or it was affecting my job or finances I'd be worried.
People seem quicker to judge "at home" drinkers than they do people who go on big "girlie nights" (ugh) and drink themselves silly.

DilysPrice · 12/03/2012 19:15

Well it's roughly ten units. If a woman did it 3 times a week then you'd noticeably increase your chances of liver damage and breast cancer amongst other things, if you did it 5 times a week then you'd be taking a really large risk of health damage, so yes, it is a lot.

EssentialFattyAcid · 12/03/2012 19:15

Not unusual but still bad for your health

Wittsend13 · 12/03/2012 19:16

Looks loving at my box of wine on the sideI don't think it's loads.

GrimmaTheNome · 12/03/2012 19:17

It would make me ill, even with a meal. But I'm small and don't drink often.

Its not a lot for some people... if they drink a lot regularly. Whether its a problem depends on how often and would she be fine with not drinking at all for a few weeks.

SparkyMcSparrow · 12/03/2012 19:17

Sparkling I need that glass! Will save me a lot of effort going stumbling to the kitchen to get a top up! Grin

lesley33 · 12/03/2012 19:18

tbh I am shocked at how common this is. She doesn't drink every night - I think the bottle of wine is only once or twice a week. But I will drink up to half a bottle of wine in 1 night and I think thats a lot.

Wine will have about 10-12 units in a bottle.
Women are advised to stick under 14 units in a week and no more than 3 units in one day.

Personally I think those are very conservative limits but it gives a guide to what is considered healthy. Of course it's individual choice whether you ignore or not. (I do and I imagine so do many. I've had about 1 1/2 bottles of red in the last 7 days.) :)

Hulababy · 12/03/2012 19:21

On a night out or a bigger than normal night in with friends then I have drank the equivalent of a bottle of wine. It's not all the time, not even once a week for me. Yes, it is probably a bit much really - but over a longer period of time out it is easily done.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 12/03/2012 19:22

Glass sizes have changed so much, it used to be 7 glasses in a bottle. I'd say it was a lot, especially if it was more than once a week.

BrianCoxHasScaryHair · 12/03/2012 19:22

At home drinkers - constantly treated like alcoholics.

I don't have a social life. I work, I keep a house, I have little pleasures in life.

I enjoy a bottle of wine on a Friday or Saturday night (sometimes the bottle lasts both nights)

As has been said several times, if it's a regular occurrence then it's bad for health etc but if it's your only night of drinking, no problem as far as I'm concerned.

I'd happily go out and drink a bottle but my close friends are currently saving to get married/steeped in Uni courses or about to have babies. I wish they'd hurry up and get back on track so I we can have some social life again Wink For now, I'm happy to be a hermit with a bottle of red Grin
