To think a bottle of wine is a LOT to drink for 1 person?

This comes out of a discussion with a frind who I saw on Saturday morning. When we talked about what we were going to do that weekend it came up that she was planning to drink a bottle of wine to herself that evening. When I commented that this was a lot, she said she regularly drank a bottle of wine.

So AIBU in thinking this is a lot for someone to drink in 1 night?

I drink a full bottle now and again but not frequently.

verytellytubby · 12/03/2012 19:26

I can easily drink a bottle of wine. I don't though. Well Fridays and Saturdays I do.

ouryve · 12/03/2012 19:27

It's 10-12 units. That's a lot on one go.

ButWhyIsTheGinGone · 12/03/2012 19:27

Ha! Red is my pleasure too, BrianCox
I rarely go out any more, as £3.40 is insane to pay for a pint (my usual drink when in pub). Also in the town I live in the only wine option is a little bottle of red or white vinegar of some crap brand - price: £3.90.
A decent £6 or £7 quid bottle to myself on a weekend night seems a lot more sensible than £40 on a pointless trek into town.
Plus I work hard and deserve it!

SparkyMcSparrow · 12/03/2012 19:28

I know alot of couple's who get through 3/4/5 bottles throughout a week. This to me seems like more of a problem than one bottle in one sitting once a week/fortnight/month etc.

Shutupanddrive · 12/03/2012 19:29

I can easily drink a bottle of wine in one night. I only drink at weekends though to save money and calories!

lesley33 · 12/03/2012 19:30

Sorry, since my last post all posters suddenly drink less than the first lot of posters Grin

ButWhy I normally stick to the cheap red at no more than £4.99 from the Co-Op classybird but ventured onto a half price 'naice' bottle on Saturday which resulted in some interesting MNing from me early hours Sunday Grin

I can't afford a proper night out :(

thegreylady · 12/03/2012 19:32

dh and I struggle to drink half a bottle between us!

DarrowbyEightFive · 12/03/2012 19:33

Surely a woman who can drink an entire bottle in one evening and not suffer from a horrible hangover the following day has built up a worrying tolerance for the stuff.

AThingInYourLife · 12/03/2012 19:33

What size glasses are you people using?

Or what size bottle?

3 glasses in a bottle of wine?

It's more like 6 glasses in this house.

I think a bottle of wine is a lot to put away in a single night. Not that I haven't done it, but it's not something I'd make a habit of.

I also think drinking a bottle of wine to yourself while on your own is not terribly healthy behaviour, particularly as something you plan for a night.

FatherHankTree · 12/03/2012 19:35

Is everyone who can drink a whole bottle really tall? I'm petite and can manage 3 small glasses at the most, so I'm assuming bigger people can drink more before it affects them?

Shutupanddrive · 12/03/2012 19:39

I'm 5'6 so not particulary tall fatherhanktree, I'm actually surprised at the amount of people on here that say they cant drink a whole bottle! Hmm

Wallace · 12/03/2012 19:39

YANBU if i drnk a botle of wine i would be verydrunk, falling over and vomiting!

catgirl1976 · 12/03/2012 19:41

Pre-DS I would drink one to one and a half bottles a night (and that was every single night Blush.

DH can do two without really blinking.

To me personally it isn't a lot, but I am aware that healthwise etc it is.

The unit guidlines differ from country to country and the are actually not based on much, but even I accept that a bottle a night every night is not going to be a healthy option.

It's fairly common and it doesn't mean your friend has an alcohol problem, but it isn't going to be good for her. If you are worried or you do think there is a problem you should speak to her but as you can see from this thread whilst not a healthy choice, it isn't uncommon

ButWhyIsTheGinGone · 12/03/2012 19:44

I am both tall and of big build.
I drink to get rid of the stress of a long day. I don't do this every night - sometimes I go to the gym, sometimes I go for a drive. By Friday I'm so knackered I usually just want to crack open a bottle at 6 when I get in. This will last me till tennish when I sleep. I certainly don't "need" to drink - particualrly towards the end of the month when I'm skint less rich I certainly don't bother.

However, unless the drinker is then going off driving or similar, I don't think there's really any need to judge. We all, ALL, do things that are detrimental to our health. Overeating, smoking - how many people who've criticised the drinkers do either of these things? We are intelligent women, we know the effects these things will have, but we make informed choices. Sometimes I honestly reckon criticisms of others' lifestyle choices are best kept to oneself.

mousymouseafraidofdogs · 12/03/2012 19:44

that's rather a lot imo.

Bunbaker · 12/03/2012 19:45

"Surely a woman who can drink an entire bottle in one evening and not suffer from a horrible hangover the following day has built up a worrying tolerance for the stuff."

I was thinking that as well. I love wine, it is my favourite tipple, but I can't drink any more than half a bottle because I get a headache

"I'm actually surprised at the amount of people on here that say they cant drink a whole bottle!"

I'm not. Being able to easily polish off an entire bottle is rather worrying. There is alcoholism in the family which makes me a little more wary about how harmful alcohol can be. If I drank a whole bottle the next day would be wiped out for me.

FatherHankTree · 12/03/2012 19:45

5'6 is fairly tall Shutupanddrive compared to my 4'11. Maybe all the lightweights on this thread are midgets like me.

Wallace · 12/03/2012 19:46

oops my post looks like i am drunk!

keyboard broken so using on screen one

catgirl1976 · 12/03/2012 19:46

I'm also 5'6. DH is 6'2 so maybe FatherHanks theory is correct :)

BellaVita · 12/03/2012 19:46

It depends how long it took to drink the bottle and how often it happens.

VickityBoo · 12/03/2012 19:47

I used to be able to in my early 20's occasionally but not now. I'd be very sick on a whole bottle and feel rubbish that night and the next day.

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 12/03/2012 19:47

I would be sick if I drank that much, half bottle is probably my limit - I am not particularly small (5'7")
