To think a bottle of wine is a LOT to drink for 1 person?

This comes out of a discussion with a frind who I saw on Saturday morning. When we talked about what we were going to do that weekend it came up that she was planning to drink a bottle of wine to herself that evening. When I commented that this was a lot, she said she regularly drank a bottle of wine.

So AIBU in thinking this is a lot for someone to drink in 1 night?

Im 5'7" and can't drink more than half a bottle.

rhondajean · 12/03/2012 19:49

I can drink a whole bottle or more in a night. I probably do it once or twice a month. I don't drink any other nights. I eat well and train six days a week. I drink lots of water with the wine (think two litre bottle ). I do not drink when I have to drive the next morning as a bottle of wine is 12 units. One unit takes approx one hour to get out your system to if you say stop drinking at 11 you are still likely to be over the limit when you drive to work the next morning.

That's more of a worry to me than finishing the bottle.

Now, a bottle of vodka in a night would be different!

EasyToEatTiger · 12/03/2012 19:52

I don't think it would do anyone much good to drink a bottle every night. Of course alcohol is dangerous. But so is crossing the road.
Some heavy drinkers I have known have lasted well into their 80s, others into their 30s. We just don't know what's going to take us out. Or when. And people will always pass judgement. I think it's better for you to do your best not to get drunk, and to give your liver a rest every now and again on a fairly regular basis.

AThingInYourLife · 12/03/2012 19:52

I love a thread where 5'6" is considered tall :o

redwineandchocolate · 12/03/2012 19:53

It's not 12 units, it's more like 9 usually, that's for a standard 12% bottle. A red may be a little more, a rosé is often only 7 units per bottle.
I think height might make a difference, I'm 5'7 and would definitely not have a hangover after a bottle of wine.
I also think people tend to be a little more judge-y about people who drink at home. I'm a student and obviously the norm is to drink when you're out - my friends will drink far more than a bottle of wine if you add up all the different drinks they have, but act shocked when I tell them I am drinking a bottle of wine on my own/with my partner. I am however very restrained on a night out and not one to knock back shots, like they are; my favourite place to drink is at home in front of crappy TV on a Saturday night with a bottle of red and a take-away dinner. Once or twice a week really isn't a big deal IMO.
You may say drinking a bottle of wine on your own isn't healthy behaviour... but really, that's quite a judgement to make. Some people drink to unwind with friends, some people, like me, love the taste of wine and would rather savour it at home where they can drink more cheaply!

ZuzuBailey · 12/03/2012 19:54

I regularly drink a glass of red of an evening but a bottle would be far too much - I'd be dying the next day (and I'm 5'6, so not tiny).

redwineandchocolate · 12/03/2012 19:56

I'm not saying drinking a bottle of wine is healthy, by the way. I'm just saying it's not a huge deal, and no less healthy necessarily than drinking socially.

catgirl1976 · 12/03/2012 19:57

I have a nice bottle of chablis in the fridge. This thread is making me think I may have a little glass in front of uni challenge

Everyone welcome to join me, but you must not speak during UC other than to answer questions or pass comment on the contestants.

rhondajean · 12/03/2012 19:57

Should say though, I drink white, a bottle of red wine would make me I'll, but that's to do with the colour and tannin.

ButWhyIsTheGinGone · 12/03/2012 19:57

Good post, redwineandchocolate
Also, it's nicer to savour it at home rather than belt it back and stagger to the next bar, as nights out often demand!

Hassled · 12/03/2012 19:58

I used to be able to do that quite easily - but the older I get the less my stamina seems to be, which is a good thing. And I don't enjoy feeling drunk anymore at all - plus the hangovers as you age are just beyond shit. Nature's way of self-regulating, I guess.

TheOriginalNutcracker · 12/03/2012 19:58

I can drink a bottle of red in a night, and i'd be quite tipsy but not completely off my face.

Couldn't drink a whole bottle of white without being ill though.

Oh i'm 5'2 if that makes a difference.

Bunbaker · 12/03/2012 19:58

I drink at home because otherwise I would never drink at all.

gimmeabreak · 12/03/2012 19:59

it's three bloody big glasses- i'd be ill on that

gimmeabreak · 12/03/2012 19:59

two glasses and i'm wasted

Bunbaker · 12/03/2012 20:01

The glasses would have to be huge for a bottle to fill only three glasses.

FerrisBueller1972 · 12/03/2012 20:03

And perhaps some of us are single parents who like a couple of glasses of wine after a full days work and the usual daily life with a six year old.

I do not share my wine with anyone Grin

molly3478 · 12/03/2012 20:04

Only ever managed this a couple of times once I tried to sleep in public and didnt even try to attempt to get home a taxi rescued me as I tried to sleep on the town hall steps.

A bottle of wine is seriously lethal way more so than most other drinks imo

RedFlagFlying · 12/03/2012 20:05

I could easily down a bottle of wine to myself, although try not to do it too regularly!

FerrisBueller1972 · 12/03/2012 20:06

And a bottle is easily drunk, with little after effects. Bit of a head though. I'm 6ft if we are running a lazy scientific experiment Grin

molly3478 · 12/03/2012 20:08

I think it probably goes off height and weight and tolerance levels however it doesnt matter how much wine I drink I never get better at it. If I drank a bottle and went out I would probably get arrested

WorraLiberty · 12/03/2012 20:08

It's only 2.5 large glasses here

bringbacksideburns · 12/03/2012 20:08

They must be very big glasses!

No i can't drink a whole bottle by myself - i'm definitely affected and have the banging head the next day to prove it.

I have friends who could manage this no problem though.

VeniVidiVisa · 12/03/2012 20:09

I'm ill if I have more than half a bottle although I can manage it throughout a long evening with a meal.

However, I have friends who can drink a bottle to themselves - no problem.

One friend is only very petite and she doesn't even appear to be drunk after a bottle of red. I suspect her body has just got used to it.

AThingInYourLife · 12/03/2012 20:10

"some people, like me, love the taste of wine and would rather savour it at home where they can drink more cheaply!"

Those people don't sit down to put away a bottle on their own.

Opening a bottle of wine with the intention of finishing the whole thing in one sitting isn't "savouring" anything.

It's heavy non-social drinking.

Which would worry me if it was a habit I had.
