To think a bottle of wine is a LOT to drink for 1 person?

This comes out of a discussion with a frind who I saw on Saturday morning. When we talked about what we were going to do that weekend it came up that she was planning to drink a bottle of wine to herself that evening. When I commented that this was a lot, she said she regularly drank a bottle of wine.

So AIBU in thinking this is a lot for someone to drink in 1 night?

I'm extremely sleepy and silly on half a bottle so it would be a lot for me.

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 13/03/2012 02:40

I disagree that not hvaing an hangover indicates a build up of tolerance - when I was younger I would put away an extraordinary amount and be fine the next day, now I can't put away the same and be alright (though not having the opportunity to sleep it off probably summat to do with it.)

YABU I think it's a fair amount but not so much to be shocked at. Right now I couldn't do more than 2 large glasses, but then DD is only 3months and I'm knackered. But once DS had stopped breastfeeding my mums and would all be able to put away a fair amount once in a while.

DH and I now have at least a glass of wine a night (we make a bottle last 5 glasses FWIW) so prob get through a couple of bottles a week between us

BiddyPop · 13/03/2012 09:14

I can go through phases of a glass every night, and the odd break out night (usually when DH is travelling and I am feeling sorry for myself) of a whole bottle - through the periods when we might each have a glass about 4-5 times per week (including a shared bottle one night on the weekend), through to almost no drink for weeks on end.

Both of us (even me when I am "home alone") can take one glass and leave the rest of the bottle.

There are other nights when we'll have a G&T before dinner, share a bottle of wine and then maybe have a glass of port afterwards.

And there are weeks when the bottle we open one friday needs to be finished off the saturday 8 days later (or even - the last 1/4 poured into an ice tray and frozen for cooking). If we've even had any at all.

Sometimes you need a blow out - but if it's an every night or VERY regular thing, I'd be worried. But the odd time, especially if you can handle it, is ok in my book.

Bottle of wine - 9-12 units

Bottle of vodka - 26 units

Why is it that sinking a bottle of wine is socially acceptable but knocking back a third to a half bottle of vodka is not?

It's alcoholist - that's what it is!

Ephiny · 13/03/2012 10:13

It would be a lot for me, but then I wouldn't normally drink more than one or maybe two small glasses, and only occasionally. If she's doing this regularly, it's probably not doing her health any good.

sozzledchops · 13/03/2012 10:26

It's too much alcohol to have in one go, really to think otherwise is crazy. But yes, I have done it more times than I should have but that doesn't make it ok.

imnotmymum · 13/03/2012 10:34

I do not think it is a lot there are worse things than enjoying a bottle of wine

YonWhaleFish · 13/03/2012 10:49

I drank TWO bottles of wine to myself last saturday.

There is an awful vid of me and DH doing bad dancing I think.

Ooops.

NowThenWreck · 13/03/2012 10:51

If I had friends over, then yes, over the course of a night I would drink a whole bottle, but I wouldn't on my own.
It is a lot, and if you don't feel drunk on a bottle of wine, your are definitly drinking too much regularly.

I noticed after having ds, when I did start drinking wine again, I could only manage one glass, and I would drink it very slowly. I had been sensitised again, from the long period of abstinence, to the real effects of alchohol.
One glass was lovely, and all I needed.

Now my tolerance has built up again, and I can knock it back like lemonade.
I agree that heavy drinking has become normalised, and that many of us are overdrinking.
It does occur to me that maybe the reason so many people I know who have kids are more knackered and stressed than they need to be because they drink too much, and therefore don't feel that healthy/have a mild hangover most days.
I probably get through 2-2.5 bottles a week, but have been thinking about the effects on my physical and mental health a lot, and am cutting down.

shreddedmum · 13/03/2012 10:52

I don't think it's a lot on a big social meal/night out, but your friend plans to drink it ALONE! and that part is worrying IMO

If she was sitting alone drinking same amount of units in stella or white lightning or cheap vodka everyone would worry, but say its wine and its okay socially, which I don't agree with.

OrmIrian · 13/03/2012 10:54

It is a lot. But unless she is doing in week in week out I guess it's not so bad.

Ephiny · 13/03/2012 10:57

There are worse things, sure, but that doesn't mean it's a good idea. Especially not as a regular thing. It's a personal choice how much you want to drink, but people shouldn't kid themselves that excessive drinking is harmless.

It really does seem a very large amount to me, I definitely couldn't drink that much without feeling sick and getting a headache, so it wouldn't be very enjoyable for me. But I seem to have a lower tolerance than many people...

YonWhaleFish · 13/03/2012 10:59

I feel compelled to add that I don't drink at all in the week, and only if I'm going out at weekends, which isn't very often anyway.

Probably why I am still feeling a bit off.

Ephiny · 13/03/2012 11:01

(of course we all have our vices - I might not drink much, but can easily eat a whole packet of biscuits or a family-size cake Blush. I know it's not good for me though!)

nothingoldcanstay · 13/03/2012 11:41

I can quite happily drink a bottle of wine simply because it's only 3/4 glasses.

I have some 275ml bottles of beer in my fridge which say they are 1.4 units. I just can't drink 7 bottles of beer in a night though or even want to.

I think it's wine itself because it's very nice and there's a bottle for every taste. It also doesn't really feel like 9/10 units a bottle.

Archemedes · 13/03/2012 11:46

No, no really only 3 big glasses but I'd be hammered , I couldnt do it every night.

I used to manage 2 easy.

glasses that is :)

BiddyPop · 13/03/2012 11:46

Last time DH was away, I had 1 glass with dinner (finished the bottle of white) and had a second later as DD had been hard to get down (almost finished the open red). Ended up finishing that red, opening another and downing 2/3 of that (probably about 1.5 bottles in total) - but over the course of about 8 hours (including the dinner one) as I was feeling lonely and maudlin, curled up watching crap american TV and then dancing around the kitchen as TOTP2 had music that I liked, until a bit too late in the morning for a worknight.

But I DID get myself and DD up and into school/work the next morning, and while I did get the bus (just in case) and did feel rough for the morning, it was a rarity.

If I had PLANNED on downing a whole bottle, I probably would have worried myself. As a once-in-a-blue-moon, and well-needed blow out, I just wrote it off.

imnotmymum · 13/03/2012 11:49

nothinggoldcanstay that so true it is the wine! Sometimes we think we will get something not so alcoholic [cider, beer] but always go to shop for a nice bottle of red and leave them in fridge for visitors!!

TheFeministsWife · 13/03/2012 11:52

It depends on how often it happens really doesn't it. A few years ago I could easily get through a bottle and a half a night most nights a week. But it started to effect my health and I realised I was on a very slippery slope so I stopped drinking completely for a while.

I slowly started to drink again. Now I usually don't drink during the week except on Thursdays, and I will drink a bottle of wine over the course of the weekend, or if I share with DH we can get through 2 bottles at the weekend. I really can't handle hangovers anymore. So I know my absolute limit is 3 glasses (which is usually just under a whole bottle), but I usually only have 2 glasses. In fact Saturday night just gone was the first time in over a year I'd had 3 glasses of wine. Was quite merry too. Grin

Anon141414 · 29/05/2014 06:47

(For me) Its nothing to finish a whole bottle of wine in a night. Its only when i (rarely) approach the bottom of that bottle of tequila do i start to doubt my alcohol consumption that night.

ChameNangerRanger · 26/11/2017 00:00

Sorry for zombie thread resurrection. Feel it's a significant evening as for the first time I have drunk a whole bottle of wine myself. The fact I'm still functioning snf typing this albeit with difficulty surprises me (would be even worse without predictive text!)

Is this the watershed? The slippery slope? Beginning of the end?

Was always a bit of a light weight and half a bottle was plenty but lately my tolerance has gone up and up! x

Pawpainting · 26/11/2017 02:33

Oh I hadnt realised this was a zombie thread. Lol at the person on the first page who takes 3 weeks to drink one bottle so therefore anyone who drinks more than this has a problem.

I think you'll be ok chamenanger. A bottle a night every night or several times a week is a problem. Not once in a while. If you're worried, stop for a bit
