Was it that odd, or is MiL overracting?

Had some bad news today and I was very upset the 2 older Dcs where on play dates. So it was just me, Dh and Dd2. Dd2 was asleep when it happened so it was just me and Dh. We curled up on the sofa and after crying all over him I fell asleep on him.
Was woken up an hour later by MIL who just lets herself in. She walked in and saw me still asleep on Dh at this point. She immediately jumped into a lecture on how this should not be done at all and using my Dh as a bed was direspectful towards him. Dh said he didn't mind and said she shouldn't of woken me up. (This is because I haven't been sleeping alot recently but MIL doesn't know this and if I'd of known she was coming I'd of tried to stay awake) MiL wasn't happy at this and asked where the Dcs where. Told her the 2 Dcs where out with their friends. She said I was awful mother and what if something had happened to the Dcs while i was asleep and they needed taking care of. I said that Dh would of woken me up plus Dh could of taken care of them otherwise. MiL pulled a face and then walked upstairs woke Dd2 , came down told me I needed to 'get cleaning' rather than laze around sleeping all day.
Dh got grumpy at this told her to leave and that she didn't know what I did for my family and that if it wasn't for me there was not way he would be able to do it all, she then left.
So was it that odd or am I the only one who has a very comfy Dh. :o

Dear God, what a bizarre woman! Another one in the change the locks camp, and seriously look at reducing the contact she has with your family as a whole.

She sounds toxic.

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 10/03/2012 22:06

Definitely change the locks - tomorrow (it's reasonably easy to do yourself).

The woman is barking. I would have gone apeshit at her - she would not have made it to the stairs - she'd have been evicted before she could go upstairs and wake a child.... honestly, some people are just so rude/barking - as for FIL he should have more sense.

LovesBeingWearingSkinnyJeans · 10/03/2012 22:08

Dh's are made for sleeping on.

Change the locks and invite your poor fil to live with you.

Sudaname · 10/03/2012 22:13

I had an Irish M-I-L (disclaimer - love the Irish and half my family are Irish) but she was that sort of psycho stereotypical Irish matriarchial sort (think 'Mrs Brown' of 'Mrs Browns Boys' but not funny). She used to walk into our house when my H at time had been paid - after l had said 'No' we couldnt lend her any money (always on the scrounge and never paid back)and walk straight past me into the kitchen where then H/her son was and then walk back through again past me triumphantly holding the tenner or whatever in her hand five minutes later.

God l hated that woman and l miss her about as much as l miss her son !

Spuddybean · 10/03/2012 22:21

What puzzles me about scenarios like this is that they are genuinely aggrieved. She will be genuinely shocked that your DH behaved like that. In her mind the story will be absolutely fine: "so i popped round and there she was sleeping! IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DAY. Laying all over DS like he was some kind of pillow, he looked really uncomfortable. And you know what? the house was a mess...and the children were out - what if there had been an emergency. So i told them it wasn't right...and then they chucked me out of their house!...etc"

Tiddlyompompom · 10/03/2012 22:22

What a weird attitude, how is having a sofa nap with your DH 'using him as a bed'? She's crazy! Would she expect you to stay awake 24/7 'in case something happened'? My DH often naps on my lap, evidently I am the 'comfy' one!
Glad your DH stuck up for you and put her straight! Well done that man. Lots of threads on here lately about spineless husbands who cowtow to their domineering mums, good to hear about a chap with his priorities straight.

ChaoticAngel · 10/03/2012 22:24

Change the locks and tell her the cost is coming out of her mothers' day, birthday and christmas pressies for the forseeable future Wink

Teeb · 10/03/2012 22:27

Is this the first strange outburst she's had, or does she have form for this sort of thing? I'm still a bit...dumbfounded.

Midnightmoon · 10/03/2012 22:28

tehe chaoticAngel sounds like a plan

Tiddlyompompom I'm very glad that I have my Dh and I am very very lucky to have him. :o

How did such a pair of horrible idiots produce such a lovely man??

CakeMixture · 10/03/2012 22:31

I would demand the key back or change the locks without question.

It is your house for you to live as you wish.

Lucky you to have a dh that supports you over his nutball mother :o

Midnightmoon · 10/03/2012 22:31

FetchezLaVache No idea but I'm glad they did

MsIngaFewmarbles · 10/03/2012 22:35

Sweet baby jesus, change the locks Shock

Midnightmoon · 10/03/2012 22:36

Hebiegebies · 10/03/2012 22:38

Give a key to the new locks to a trusted neighbour who won't walk in on you

AdventureInKL · 10/03/2012 22:40

Did he tell FIL that MIL was trying to bully you?

Midnightmoon · 10/03/2012 22:45

Yes he told FiL that MiL was being horrid and unreasonable. FiL said he was her only son and Dh should stop letting his wife rule him

OP posts:
Spuddybean · 10/03/2012 22:49

So FIL thinks it's normal to walk into other peoples houses and have a go at them when they are sleeping? He thinks you are 'ruling' your DH because he said that it wasn't on?

Yeah - they're both bonkers!

msrisotto · 10/03/2012 22:49

Oh the irony

nailak · 10/03/2012 22:53

She sounds jealous.

mrstiredandconfused · 10/03/2012 22:58

Christ on a bike- please change your locks ASAP. She not only sounds bonkers but also quite an unhealthy influence on your dc. Sorry to hear you've had bad news x

Sudaname · 10/03/2012 23:00

Yes they definitely beat even my ex m-i-l into a cocked hat.

Never thought I'd see the day.

Booby trap the door Change the locks.

FetchezLaVache · 10/03/2012 23:01

MsR beat me to it! Your PIL may be many things, but at least they're comedy gold. Grin

PikachusMate · 10/03/2012 23:06

My MIL does not have a key for a reason. My Mum does. But then she wouldn't dare enter without knocking on pain of death. Unlike MIL. (Equally we give my mum the same respect).

Doesn't matter if you were hanging from chandeliers when she came in. Its none of her business. Its your private space. Even if you have a key you don't enter someone else's house without permission.
