To think that if someone elderly gets on a busy bus...

...they should not expect a seat?!?

I would of course give up a seat for someone elderly or less able than me but should they think they're entitled to a seat just because they're old especially if they get on bus which already has people standing?!?

Your views please

YABU. Able bodied adults who are well should be prepared to give up their seat.

crazynanna · 08/03/2012 09:45

Always give up my seat for an elderly person. The ones' I see are so shaky on their legs, clinging onto the pole,I can't sit there all nice and snug while they swizz around the pole.

thegreylady · 08/03/2012 09:47

Yabu I am 68 and would give up my seat to someone obviously much older or more infirm.

Thetokengirl · 08/03/2012 09:47

Buses have priority seats for those that need them, so the lderly should expect a seat.
YABU

cocolepew · 08/03/2012 09:47

YABU.

Thetokengirl · 08/03/2012 09:47

Ilderly? What are they? elderly

NotaStatistic · 08/03/2012 09:48

Oh no I agree I would if they couldn't stand but I saw someone get on a bus with a bus pass but was definetly NOT frail demand a seat when should could stand perfectly well.

Anyone who needs a seat less than any other person should give their seat up to that person. Elderly people, unless supremely fit, are likely to need the seat more than any able bodied younger person.

I don't think the OP quite gets what happens to people's bodies when they get older: how the stability of the joints changes, how legs start to ache, how a fall will hurt you much more.

WorraLiberty · 08/03/2012 09:48

Dear god

YABU, of course people should give them a seat.

If the bus braked hard and I went flying, I'd stand up red faced and dust myself off.

A lot of elderly people wouldn't have that privilege, and may well end up in hospital or worse.

badtasteflump · 08/03/2012 09:48

YABU - I would give up my seat for anybody less able to stand than me - which includes someone elderly.

What is your solution then? Would you check if they feel they are entitled to the seat before you offer it to them, then retract the offer if they do?

Even if an elderly person appears grumpy and 'entitled', I would still offer my seat, then spend the day feeling smug for being a better person Smile

lesley33 · 08/03/2012 09:48

YABVU
And tbh don't understand how many elderly people, even fit and healthy looking ones, have poorer balance and strength than younger people.

NotaStatistic · 08/03/2012 09:49

What if those seats were already full with elderly people?!? And people over 60 were already standing should they expect a seat then?!?

Itsjustafleshwound · 08/03/2012 09:49

I don't know if they should EXPECT a seat, but certainly the other bus users should be accommodating ..

Sarahplane · 08/03/2012 09:49

Yadbu it's down to who needs the seat most.

OpheliasWeepingWillow · 08/03/2012 09:49

YABU and entitled

WorraLiberty · 08/03/2012 09:50

There's that MN word 'demand' again...funny how it pops up when people are trying to labour their point Hmm

And unless you had full access to their medical records, I fail to see how you can claim they were definitely not frail.

NotaStatistic · 08/03/2012 09:50

I always stand for elderly but when I visit my nan, the bus which travels there is full of elderly people (to which I stand on this bus) and yet they still moan if they get on and have to stand.

NotaStatistic · 08/03/2012 09:51

WorraLiberty I saw them run for the bus

Mrsjay · 08/03/2012 09:51

it was children giving seat thread the other day sigh if a frail/ elderly person gets on a bus get of your arse and give them a seat is it because they have a bus pass and get on for free that irks you ,

WorraLiberty · 08/03/2012 09:51

And what are the chances of a bus being packed to standing room only capacity with nothing but OAP's?

I think you're clutching at straws now with your 'what ifs'

MadameMessy · 08/03/2012 09:51

yabu.
of course the nice thing to do is offer someone a seat who needs it more than you. I hope that when you get older people don't treat you in the way you seem to think is offer ok

edam · 08/03/2012 09:52

you can't always tell whether someone has difficulties standing by looking at them. Someone with heart failure may not immediately appear disabled but may be ruddy exhausted. Someone who finds it hard to balance while standing on a moving bus may need a seat but not look disabled. Someone with arthritis in their hands may find it hard to grasp the pole. Etc. etc. etc.

WorraLiberty · 08/03/2012 09:52

WorraLiberty I saw them run for the bus

Which is even more of a reason to let the poor fucker sit down....no?

NotaStatistic · 08/03/2012 09:52

No I do stand for them because they need the seat more then me

OP posts:
Mrsjay · 08/03/2012 09:53

and just because an older person looks fit and healthy doesnt mean they wouldnt break a bone if they fell
