To think that if someone elderly gets on a busy bus...

...they should not expect a seat?!?

I would of course give up a seat for someone elderly or less able than me but should they think they're entitled to a seat just because they're old especially if they get on bus which already has people standing?!?

Your views please

YANBU if they are 'able'. I will happily give my seat up if someone, anyone, gets on the bus and they are a bit wobbly and frail but not just because they are cracking on a bit.

IAmBooyhoo · 08/03/2012 10:05

"I just wont moan if get on an overcrowded bus and cant sit when im old thats all"

when are you going to put this 'not moaning' into practise then? starting tomorrow?

NotaStatistic · 08/03/2012 10:05

I dont moan when I get on a bus and have to stand I just get irritated by those who do.

OP posts:
IAmBooyhoo · 08/03/2012 10:07

no, you just moan about others moaning Hmm

NotaStatistic · 08/03/2012 10:09

No im asking for opinions from others not to get slated for being slightly irritated.

do you know what the most annoying thing about this thread is? even if i hide it now, it's too late, i've seen it and know it exists.

OP you're having a whinge. clear for all to see.

bobbledunk · 08/03/2012 10:13

Oh fgs, how lazy and rude can you be, most old people have arthritis and lots of physical problems due to age that can make standing for long periods very painful. Their bones are weaker so if they fall on the bus can break their hips or sustain other serious injury.

Unless you have a genuine physical ailment yourself you get off your arse and offer your seat.

yabu.

LadySybilDeChocolate · 08/03/2012 10:14

I chat to the bus drivers here, they do actually say that the OAPs use the bus because they have nothing else to do and it's free. He has several people who travel from one place and then return straight away. They do this all day. There's no standing spaces on my usual bus. In the afternoon 80% of the people on there are OAPs and it's a nightmare trying to get a seat.

NotaStatistic · 08/03/2012 10:15

I will state again I do offer my seat to elderly (frail or not), parents with small children and those with obviouse difficulties making them unable to stand.

If someone asked me politly for a seat I would give it up but would expect a thank you.

just been thinking about this some more. When I was pregnant on the bus, no one ever offered me a seat. The driver had to go on the pa system and say he wasn't driving until someone got up and gave me a seat. I was mortified, yes a seat would be nice, but it wasn't the end of the world if I didn't get one, I can hang on and am able to balance.
No one ever speaks up for old people like this, why shouldn't they speak up for themselves? they are old ffs, give them a break. its just a seat.

edam · 08/03/2012 10:19

Aw, you may have been mortified but he sounds like a lovely driver.

NotaStatistic · 08/03/2012 10:19

Ive known drivers ask peopleto give up seats even ,other passengers will yell at people move for elderly.

Fast forward xxx years and lets see if you're still saying that. Hmm

NotaStatistic · 08/03/2012 10:20

It is true though those drivers are few and far between.

I find it difficult to stand on bses now but I dont moan if I have to stand

OP posts:
LadySybilDeChocolate · 08/03/2012 10:21

We move for elderly people. It's guaranteed that some twonk will jump into the seat before they have the chance to sit down though. Hmm

2shoes · 08/03/2012 10:22

op are you obsessed with buses?
you bumped a long dead one about them earlier this week.

NotaStatistic · 08/03/2012 10:22

Ive seen that before someone got on with crutches so a lady moved from the front seat and someone jumped in her place only to annoyed when she too had to move.

No 2shoes it just got me thinking when I bused home yesterday.

lesley33 · 08/03/2012 10:29

ladysibil - when i have stood up for someone elderly and someone else sits down, I have told the person sitting down to get up for the elderly person

RuleBritannia · 08/03/2012 10:29

I'm well over pension age and use the local bus a fair bit but I am fit and well and often run for my bus. I do not need to sit down but, if someone were to offer me a seat, I would accept gracefully because it would look as if I were throwing the offer back in their face otherwise. Sometimes, I give up my seat if I have one to someone more needy including women holding tiny babies.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 08/03/2012 10:31

Oh, for heaven's sake. I was brought up to be courteous to people older than me - if you can, just offer the seat. End of. Next.

DeWe · 08/03/2012 10:32

No, I think you've all got it wrong.

Surely the thing the OP is thinking is that when the elderly person gets on the bus, you give them a hard shove. If they stay standing then they're fine and don't need the seat. If they go flying then they're unstable and infirm and need a seat. Of course it's possibly they may need an ambulance now so you don't need to give up the seat then (but the bus may be a little delayed) Wink

NotaStatistic · 08/03/2012 10:32

Avon Im not saying you shouldn't or that I dont give up a seat only that you shouldn't be rude to others to try and get a seat. Respect is earned.

OP posts:
Helenfellows33 · 08/03/2012 10:33

i would out of respect. as the others have said if an elderlyperson falls they will probably break something. if a person has more need than you i.e if you are not elderly and infirm yourself.

BTW stood all the time back and fourth on the train to work while was pregnant and was never offered a seat.
