To think that if someone elderly gets on a busy bus...

...they should not expect a seat?!?

I would of course give up a seat for someone elderly or less able than me but should they think they're entitled to a seat just because they're old especially if they get on bus which already has people standing?!?

Your views please

Not always not when there weren't any free seats and people were already standing

It's just curteous surely? You know, those things called manners? Fwiw, I've started to insist on sitting down on the bus as I have low blood pressure and I feel awful knowing I don't look like there's anything wrong with me (tiny full term bump, not visible under a coat). Just because people don't necessarily look like they need a seat, doesn't mean that if you definately don't, you shouldn't offer a seat.

lesley33 · 08/03/2012 09:55

run for a bus Hmm

Okay...they may still have very poor balance and struggle to stand on a moving bus or have arthritis and struggle to hold on to a pole - none of which affects their legs

DoingTheBestICan · 08/03/2012 09:55

YABU,my late mil had a disibility that was not visible but involved one of her senses, some selfish twat refused to let her sit down & the driver braked hard, she fell & broke her arm & elbow.

If you are able to stand then you shouldnt be made to stand for someone else to sit - you should want to do it for your own morals.

NotaStatistic · 08/03/2012 09:55

I understand and agree with you fuckity which is why people should never get abuse for not standing eiher because they could have medical conditions too.

You stand up of course,

Not just out of respect but bus drivers are menaces , an older person is more likely to fall.

Although I do wonder why the are always there waiting for the earliest bus. You're retired! have a lie in!!!!!!

Mrsjay · 08/03/2012 09:55

I have mobility problems and i cant stand on a bus i look healthy i dont have bits falling off me but i need a seat, i get looks sometimes I wish i could let somebody sit on my seat ,

IAmBooyhoo · 08/03/2012 09:55

what is the point of all this madness? where are all these fucking space cadets coming from?

OP i suggest you go and lie down in a darkened room, breathe slowly and count to 10 before your next post.

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 08/03/2012 09:56

Oh ffs, it doesn't matter about age. If someone needs a seat they need a seat. Who are you to judge if they're prefectly able to stand or not?

I once spent a weekend in Prague and was highly amused by the seat swapping that went on there. There was clearly a very defined plan of who got priority for seats so people were forever jumping up and offering seats. I couldn't quite work out the rules so tried standing most of the time, but was usually physically forced into a seat by a kind young man. It made me laugh at the time, but I still think of it fondly when I see people here staring into their papers when elderly/infirm/pregnant people are standing.

Marymaryalittlecontrary · 08/03/2012 09:56

I would say that most elderly people grew up in a time and place when it was expected for children to give up their seats to any adults, and for adults to give up seats to elderly adults. Therefore they have had years of giving up seats, so yes, they should be able to expect a seat (unless the whole bus is already full of frail elderly people!). My mum's friend lost her front teeth when a bus braked suddenly when she was standing up. A younger person may have had better balance or have been able to put their hands out in time to break their fall.

NotaStatistic · 08/03/2012 09:56

Archemedes I see it all the time they queue at 9:15 and they're not alowed till 9:30 for free where I live which I find slightly amusing.

lesley33 · 08/03/2012 09:57

It is amusing - but most elderly people seem to wake up very early

spartafc · 08/03/2012 09:57

I always give my seat up to an elderly person. I think it's confusing as to who I should consider elderly, since my parents are nearly 70 and I can't imagine either of them thinking they should be given a seat. But I get calls at work from people who say they need help with eg writing a letter 'because I'm 67'. I always think 'and??'
Having stood many times on crutches, on buses, trains and trams I appreciate that it is difficult to keep upright if you have mobility issues!

NotaStatistic · 08/03/2012 09:58

I dont agree that parents with small children should stand I believe they require a seat to but maybe they could move backwards if possible.

If a younger adult falls because the bus driver swerves or brakes and they struggle to hold on, they may bruise themselves. If an elderly person falls, they are more likely to break their bones and suffer serious injury, which can mean they are left permanently disabled and can no longer live independently. A broken hip can shorten someone's life.

Would you want that on your conscience?

echt · 08/03/2012 09:59

OP is obviously hoping to die before she gets old. In a Who- stylee.

And IBVVVU.

Mrsjay · 08/03/2012 09:59

I get on a great little bus sometimes its full of the elderly ladies mostly going to marks and spencers for bits they are funny as they do offer seats to somebody that is older than them there is a queen bee of this bus she is 80 odd the almost get out the red carpet for her and always gets the front seat Grin ,

NotaStatistic · 08/03/2012 09:59

Ive known people give up a seat for an elderly gent and been shouted out for assuming he needed it so sometimes you cant win.

OP posts:
WorraLiberty · 08/03/2012 09:59

Slightly amusing that they might be so bored and lonely, they want to get out of the house? Hmm

Elderly people tend to start their days earlier because (as a rule) they don't exactly have a social life at night.

Also, most hospital appointments start early in the day.

NotaStatistic · 08/03/2012 10:00

I just wont moan if get on an overcrowded bus and cant sit when im old thats all

mousymouseafraidofdogs · 08/03/2012 10:01

yanbu - if elder means he/she is fit and able to stand
yabu - if the person (any age) is less able to stand than anyone sitting

NotaStatistic · 08/03/2012 10:02

mousymouseafraidofdogs That i agree with whole heartedly

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 08/03/2012 10:03

Just get up and let the old person sit down, if you are able to and have no problems yourself which mean you can't. The End.
