to think Tesco should fucking well PAY THEIR STAFF?

QueenOfFlippingEverything · 16/02/2012 16:32

I know, I know, there have been threads about it already.

But this is so rage-inducing, I want THE WHOLE OF EVERYONE to know about it.

Jobcentre advert placed by Tesco for night shift staff. Who will be paid [drumroll] JSA (£67 a week) plus travel expenses.

Why the fucking fuck should Tesco get their staff for free? Why? Their profits last year were something like £3.5 billion last year!

I know who I think is taking the piss here, and its not the unemployed people who will be forced to work night shifts at Tesco for their £67 a week Angry

we already did minimaths.

HappyMummyOfOne · 16/02/2012 18:58

Whilst it would be nice if the work was in the community or for charities, it would need running etc which would cost a huge amount so it does make sense to use existing facilities.

The scheme doesnt kick in until after 12 months so those who are not picky will find jobs and never have to go on it. For those that claim JSA for more than 12 months it gives them something recent to put on their CV and gets them back into a routine for work.

Having a welfare system for those who fall on hard times should always be in place but there are many claimants who chose it as a way of life and would claim for years if there were not measures in place to stop them happening. You can find posts on here where posters reassure others they should hold out on benefits for their dream job, have children based on the benefit calculation or cut their hours to maximise WTC.

I was at my local Tesco the other Sunday and there was no bread in the bakery bit (there was sliced Kingsmill etc in the "normal bread" bit).

I mentioned to the lady on the checkout that they must have been very busy because all the "naice bread" had sold out.

She said that to save money overtime had been stopped and the freshly baked bread on Sundays is made by bakery staff working overtime, so they are not allowed to work and there is no bread.

I did think WTF for 2 reasons:

  • next time I want to go shopping on a Sunday I'll go to Sainsbury's as Tesco won't have the bread I want. How is people going elsewhere going to help Tesco make more money?
  • And Tesco? Trying to save money? Having a laugh, surely?

She said that Tescos are not making money in the UK, only in other countries. Confused

headfairy · 16/02/2012 19:02

not sure if anyone's linked to this yet but Workfare is just yet more proof that despite a completely different set of wankers in Number 10, the Torys are still the biggest bunch of cunts you'll ever have the misfortune to meet.

why don't they ask Philip Green to pay some tax on the money he gave to his wife (domicile: Monaco) as a tax avoidance scheme instead of using slave labour?

BertieBotts · 16/02/2012 19:06

I can't believe they are now being so open about it and nobody cares :( Well, clearly, lots of people care, but nobody with the power to stop it.

Disgusting.

thecook · 16/02/2012 19:08

PeaHenTailFeathers - A 4 E are one of the worst culprits. I have been with Ingeus for a while. They ring me about once a month, two times tops and rarely reply to me emails updating them on my jobseeking efforts. So they are basically taking money from the government for doing fuck all.

molepom · 16/02/2012 19:10

You think that's bad?

Read this..here

Utter fucking disgrace.

headfairy · 16/02/2012 19:11

BalloonSlayer We did an interview with the Tesco CE a few weeks ago at work, they are screwed basically. He's got to find lots and lots of savings. Lots of reasons, recession etc, but also they got incredibly complacent. Their business model was shite, they expanded too fast, have too many stores and yet have no customer loyalty because they treat them like idiots. In the meantime shops like Waitrose have quietly gone about reacting to the economic climate, listening to customer comments and adapting to suit the market.

garlicfrother · 16/02/2012 19:16

those who are not picky will find jobs - are you saying the 8 job-seekers for every job are being picky?

You do realise that, if ALL 239,372 vacancies are filled tomorrow, there will STILL be 1,647,128 people looking for jobs and NO vacancies?

headfairy · 16/02/2012 19:16

e petition to abolish workfare

Nilgiri · 16/02/2012 19:20

Jesus. If I were well enough to work I'd be actually working. You know, for an actual fee/salary.

The utterly bonkers, bonkers thing is that manual or shop work is the very last thing I'll be physically fit for - I may never be able to do that again in my life.

But I'm very likely to improve enough to do a few hours a week working from home in either of my shortage-skills professions. Only if I carefully restrict hours and don't overdo it.

"Sick" seems to be equated with "never worked, no skills". Crazy.

KateSpade · 16/02/2012 19:20

MiniMathsMouse
Is that Sarcasm I'm sensing their?

I'm a Fashion intern and by that statement i meant my designs have been seen on the T.V, and no. The company i work for didn't sent the person the Item, they went and bought it off their own back.

Fashion Internships are very hard to come by, 90% of fashions design jobs won't look at your portfolio unless you've done work experience, most of them require a year before you even apply.

I know its not a similar situation to the work fare programs in anyway, but i just wanted to stick up for myself.

Nilgiri · 16/02/2012 19:22

Sorry, that was in response to molepom's link saying that, if people aren't well enough to work, they should do mandatory unpaid work.

molepom · 16/02/2012 19:25

Are you fucking kidding me?

If you have terminal cancer, have 7 months to live which takes you over the 6 month rule and you have to spend the last few months of your life working in a job with the last of the energy you have and in pain..and that's alrigh with you?
Seriously?

If people are not fit to work there's a good reason for it..they CAN NOT WORK paid or otherwise.

garlicfrother · 16/02/2012 19:26

Yep, Nilgiri, the DWP advise actually states you can be sent on workfare up to three months before your doctor says you're fit to work.

Bearing in mind these placements tend to be warehouse work, shelf-stacking and so on (and workfarers don't have employment rights, being - not, you, know, employed) that should lead to some interesting workfare-related injuries ...

SardineQueen · 16/02/2012 19:31

This stuff makes me feel too hopeless to even froth.

molepom · 16/02/2012 19:31

Nilgiri - I'm so sorry, and PM'd you. I miss read your post and took offence to it. I'm so sorry.

ivykaty44 · 16/02/2012 19:33

Set a date for thousands of ppeole to walk into fresco and fill there trolleys then leave them at the cashout and leave the store empty handed cause chaos but nothing the store can do if youchange you're mind and don't want there goods.. Not against the law...

KalSkirata · 16/02/2012 19:33

Im sure your unpaid internship is great katespade and valuable experience. But how are you paying rent/food/bills without getting paid?

thecook · 16/02/2012 19:34

KateSpade - your situation is very far removed from Workfare. Hardly fantastic to be stacking shelves all night is it?

KalSkirata · 16/02/2012 19:36

Like I said earlier, if Tesco's have the jobs then they should give them to unemployed people as fucking pay them the standard wage.
As a taxpapyer I do not want to be paying Tesco to take on slaves. The Govt pay Tesco. ffs

NormanTebbit · 16/02/2012 19:38
Shock

Nightshift???? I get enhanced pay for nightshift work which cushions the blow. Because you can get ill doing it, especially in summer.

Tesco are absolute fuckers. I am never shopping there again. It's not like those poor JSA people are going to get a job out of it in the end - why should Tesco give them a job with a proper rate of pay when the taxpayer will pay them instead.

Angry
NormanTebbit · 16/02/2012 19:39

Am cutting up Tesco credit card. Will be shopping in Aldi/ Lidl from now on.

KalSkirata · 16/02/2012 19:39

I saw some republican in the US say that child labour was ok. Given we copy them, expect that soon.
All those workshy kids, scrounging for 18 years...

KalSkirata · 16/02/2012 19:40

I think I will be bussing to Morrisons even though its a pain. Fuck Tescos/Boots/Poundland etc
