to think Tesco should fucking well PAY THEIR STAFF?

QueenOfFlippingEverything · 16/02/2012 16:32

I know, I know, there have been threads about it already.

But this is so rage-inducing, I want THE WHOLE OF EVERYONE to know about it.

Jobcentre advert placed by Tesco for night shift staff. Who will be paid [drumroll] JSA (£67 a week) plus travel expenses.

Why the fucking fuck should Tesco get their staff for free? Why? Their profits last year were something like £3.5 billion last year!

I know who I think is taking the piss here, and its not the unemployed people who will be forced to work night shifts at Tesco for their £67 a week Angry

What about the minimum wage. Can someone explain workfare please.

ValarMorghulis · 16/02/2012 17:04

I can't read the thread because i will explode into a tirade of foul language and insults if i read someones ignorant moronic defence of the worfare scheme.

I hope that someone has pointed out that this scheme that is supposed to help those lazy dole scroungers back into work, is actually reducing the hours of paid employees and will eventually be enticing them to stop hiring in favour of this slave labour.

it is a ridiculous idea and the brainchild of an utter cunt

Agincourt · 16/02/2012 17:05

Yes I do agree about internship but I still think they should be paid, like apprenticeships generally are. It seems the bottom line now is always about profit rather than skills and people

thecook · 16/02/2012 17:05

It is totally disgusting.

TunipTheVegemal · 16/02/2012 17:06

that's a relief, that Sainsbury's have pulled out.

usualsuspect · 16/02/2012 17:06

Its outrageous, I've been ranting all day about it to anyone who happened to cross my path

Agincourt · 16/02/2012 17:09

boycott workfare blog for anyone who is interested

thecook · 16/02/2012 17:09

I wonder if any of the claimants participating in the Workfare scheme will get disgruntled and resentful and you know 'borrow' a few things whilst stacking the shelves at night.......

nagynolonger · 16/02/2012 17:10

Are these people offered proper jobs after a certain time?

FannyPriceless · 16/02/2012 17:11

Link just updated in the Guardian within the last half hour. Tesco are claiming it was a mistake but the Guardian has found other examples.

As far as I know I read several days ago that Sainsburys had already pulled out of the scheme, along with some others like maybe Waterstones.

Agincourt · 16/02/2012 17:13

Of course they aren't offered proper jobs. The ratio of people that were taken on after this period was very small.

Fanny, stop repeating me :o

KalSkirata · 16/02/2012 17:16

wankers

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 16/02/2012 17:16

YANBU (about the Tesco not paying staff bit, I would have thought it would be better for independent shops/companies to benefit from this) but...

Makes a total mockery of claims that the scheme is to give people work related skills

Well, it might be shelf stacking, but surely whoever does it will be learning work related skills? Turning up on time? Dressing in a presentable way? Working as part of a team?

Presumably it is also something to put on a CV?

ThatVikRinA22 · 16/02/2012 17:17

yanbu. how immoral, quite unbelievable that this is going on, Tesco say that 300 have found work through the scheme but i wonder how many have actually been forced to participate?

its crap.

FannyPriceless · 16/02/2012 17:17

Loook agincourt, I am old and feeble and by the time I've read the thread and found the link the world has moved on. It all happens too fast for me!Grin Wink

minimathsmouse · 16/02/2012 17:17

This creates a huge disincentive for businesses to employ people. In America, states have to hand out food stamps to the employees of wallmart. In this country the government has encouraged and endorsed low wages by subsiding incomes with tax cedit.

The twunts may as well just pour tax payer money straight into the tills at Tesco because that's effectively what is happening.

Agincourt · 16/02/2012 17:18

I work in retail and the shop I work in is pretty small and we are getting THREE HUNDRED applications a week to the actual shop and there is no vacancy Confused

Agincourt · 16/02/2012 17:19

mmm Horlicks, pass me a jar unpaid worker Wink

Please note how the Guardian has said the Arcadia group are using the scheme

UphillBothWays · 16/02/2012 17:21

I think Asda does this too.

A truly disgusting practice, really makes me angry.

minimathsmouse · 16/02/2012 17:21

Yes Agincourt many unemployed people actually WANT to work but this scheme actually undermines people finding REAL work.

aletea · 16/02/2012 17:21

Thank the fuckers who voted them in. Nice work, there.

ThisIsExtremelyVeryNotGood · 16/02/2012 17:22

YANBU.

ATruth it is extraordinarily insulting to presume that jobseekers do not already have those skills. Most will have previously been in employment, many doing the same job they are being sent to "gain experience" in Hmm

Voidka · 16/02/2012 17:23

Disgraceful practice - why should Tesco get away with not paying their staff.

Do they pay tax and NI on these staff either?

Voidka · 16/02/2012 17:23

for not on

minimathsmouse · 16/02/2012 17:23

I think a great idea would be for millions of people at a given time on a given day, walk into their local Tesco and fill a trolley and walk.

Could they actually arrest so many people? seems to me that those lucky enough to have work are paying twice for their shopping, so why not take some of that back Grin
