to think Tesco should fucking well PAY THEIR STAFF?

QueenOfFlippingEverything · 16/02/2012 16:32

I know, I know, there have been threads about it already.

But this is so rage-inducing, I want THE WHOLE OF EVERYONE to know about it.

Jobcentre advert placed by Tesco for night shift staff. Who will be paid [drumroll] JSA (£67 a week) plus travel expenses.

Why the fucking fuck should Tesco get their staff for free? Why? Their profits last year were something like £3.5 billion last year!

I know who I think is taking the piss here, and its not the unemployed people who will be forced to work night shifts at Tesco for their £67 a week Angry

I also don't understand why Jobseekers are forced to give up voluntary work with organisations which may actually enhance their work skills, in favour of doing voluntary work stacking shelves.
So long as the person is doing some purposefull work which will enhance their CV, why should they be pushed into work for big businesses over charities/museums etc.

KateSpade · 16/02/2012 17:26

I'm an Intern, unpaid. Its fantastic experience, I've managed to do things i'd never have thought possible.
But sometimes i think they are taking the piss of out of all their staff, especially me, but y'know.

I agree and disagree with the back to work programs, i am under the understanding that it helps people back to work who have got stuck in a rut, but when its a multi-billion dollar corporation like tesco? Absolutely not. Charity? Yes! Helping training in a particular industry? yes! Saying that do not even get me started on the £500 NHS bursary. I know i will be flamed, but my friend used to moan she didn't get enough free money, and its really got my goat.

Met a different friend last night who said she'd be applying everywhere, and she didn't even get the job in the chippy she applied for, So instead of back to work scheme's, personally i think they should start employing people, clearly they need them? - tesco's i mean!

Agincourt · 16/02/2012 17:27

I have recently been unemployed minimathsmouse, I do know how hard things are. I wasn't undermining anyones desire to work

VivaLeBeaver · 16/02/2012 17:30

I hope some absolute neds take them up on their offer and shoplift as much as they can!

garlicfrother · 16/02/2012 17:31

As of last week, when I checked:-

Lidl and Aldi don't use workfare.
Waitrose say they don't, which is probably true.
Sainsbury's say they don't - but phrase their reply in such a way that they're not commenting on using workfare staff 'provided' by the companies who run the workfare schemes.
Morrison's won't reply.
M&S were using workfare last Christmas.
Asda use workfare but have told the press they're going to stop.
Poundland and Poundstretcher use workfare.
MacDonalds and KFC use workfare.
Reed and A4E use workfare and administer the schemes. Both companies exclude workfarers from their own recruitment procedures.

There are currently 8 job-seekers for every vacancy in England. Obviously, workfare is taking more jobs out of the market - meaning the government is funnelling 'free' labour into commercial posts.

In New York, where workfare has been running for years, it's not uncommon for people to be sent to their old jobs on workfare after being made redundant.

In London, LT security staff were made redundant last year. Passengers said they felt unsafe, so LT brought in security staff on workfare. Some of them were the previously employed guards.

Minimathsmouse - Fab idea.

minimathsmouse · 16/02/2012 17:33

I was agreeing with you Agincourt, It didn't come over well though.

I am self employed and don't show up in the unemployment figures, a few years ago I would have loved to have worked for someone but even then there wasn't any remotely interesting jobs around here.

I find it really worrying that Tesco is so up it;s self it thinks stacking shelves is a skill worthy of 8 weeks or 6 months training. It's insulting to each and every person that is forced into this.

GoingForGoalWeight · 16/02/2012 17:38

I'm in receipt of CA but i would love a very part time job, in school hours. I've really tried to find work/voluntary work for the past 4 months but to no avail. Maybe this might suit me but i agree with mathamouse too :( and i'd only be supporting a scheme which is not good for those that want REAL jobs :(

Agincourt · 16/02/2012 17:40

Sorry, i am not very good at this internet lark Blush I didn't show in the unemployment figure either as I don't/can't claim jobseekers. The unemployment figures are alot higher than we are ever led to believe.

I imagine people will gain skills and having worked in food retail it is more than about stacking shelves but it's a minimum paid role anyway and they should be paying people, morally, ethically and legally.

SardineQueen · 16/02/2012 17:45

For fuckity fucks SAKE

thecook · 16/02/2012 17:46

Minimathsmouse - this would work best in a Tesco Extra store as opposed to a Metro one. More high value goods.

I would like to know how much supervised on the job training there is to learn to stack shelves.

'I'm an Intern, unpaid. Its fantastic experience, I've managed to do things i'd never have thought possible. '

So how are you paying for food and rent and bills Kate?

wannaBe · 16/02/2012 18:03

so according to the link above, Tesco have taken on 1400 people under this scheme, and further down it says that 300 people have found permanent employment as a result..

So if you go and work for them you have just over a 20% chance of getting a permanent job at the end of it. Hmm

And what happens if you don't get a job with them? do your benefits remain as was or do you have to then go and work for someone else...?

garlicfrother · 16/02/2012 18:03

Thanks, TSC!

Co-Op don't use workfare.
Boots do use them.
Dorothy Perkins do.
Wilkinsons do.

Tesco's end-of-year report (record profit of £3.8bn) boasted they make £14,300 profit per employee. I'm sure they'll see that going up even more, now they don't have to pay all their staff wages.

KalSkirata · 16/02/2012 18:05

I think you're onto another workfare place wannabe.
Those 1400 should have been taken on as proper paid staff with pensions/sickness pay etc. At proper wages.
Given those positions were available. Then they'd be paying tax and NI and off benefits.

Sevenfold · 16/02/2012 18:06

YANBU
But it is not Tesco and other slave users fault.
this is down to the government

FeelForMyFriend · 16/02/2012 18:08

That is fucking disgusting!!!!!!!

they want slaves not staff

wannaBe · 16/02/2012 18:10

well at the very least they should have been taken on as temporary employees.

I disagree this is down to the government. Nobody is obliged to sign up to these schemes, plenty of companies don't.

In principle I actually have no issue with the idea of having to do something for benefits. But there is IMO a difference between doing voluntary work within, y'know, the voluntary sector, and working for a company who generally pays their staff to do a job but they won't pay you because you're part of a scheme and that is open to exploitation.

KalSkirata · 16/02/2012 18:10

Isnt the Govt also paying Tesco to take on workfare staff? Win-win for the giant corporation then Sadly they killed the Co-op on our High Street and without bussing several miles its Tesco or nothing.

wannaBe · 16/02/2012 18:11

how much is minimum wage?

minimathsmouse · 16/02/2012 18:11

'I'm an Intern, unpaid. Its fantastic experience, I've managed to do things i'd never have thought possible. ' I bet, who would ever have thought it possible to do the same job as the person next to you and do it for fresh air. Smile

I think the cause of this stupidity is globalisation. First companies lobby very effectively to outsource production to where its cheaper, then they lobby for economic unsustainable immigration and finally they manage to employ people as slaves. Incredible, all this while we the tax payer or we the unemployed are told to tighten our belts to bail out the economy. Blood clever isn't it?

thecook, I think here, the local super market would be easier, it's out of town, pretty big so the more people the merrier.

KalSkirata · 16/02/2012 18:11

what happens regarding childcare for workfare people? How can childcare be paid on JSA?
