to think Tesco should fucking well PAY THEIR STAFF?

QueenOfFlippingEverything · 16/02/2012 16:32

I know, I know, there have been threads about it already.

But this is so rage-inducing, I want THE WHOLE OF EVERYONE to know about it.

Jobcentre advert placed by Tesco for night shift staff. Who will be paid [drumroll] JSA (£67 a week) plus travel expenses.

Why the fucking fuck should Tesco get their staff for free? Why? Their profits last year were something like £3.5 billion last year!

I know who I think is taking the piss here, and its not the unemployed people who will be forced to work night shifts at Tesco for their £67 a week Angry

Does anyone have a list of these shops?

I think ASDA has been mentioned as one of them as well.

blackoutthesun · 16/02/2012 19:43

i was reading in the private eye that the gov pay private compainies to run the workfare. and if any of these companies go bust then the taxpayer will bail them out

molepom · 16/02/2012 19:45

Figures..Sad

minimathsmouse · 16/02/2012 19:46

KateSpade probably assumes a minimathsmouse must be an accountant or some other number cruncher but that's not so. I studied fashion straight out of school and I concur trying to gain experience in this field is nigh impossible, even more so unless Mummy or Daddy can pay your rent.

Unpaid internships might be great for youngsters who's parents can help them but workfare is preventing honest decent people from gaining meaningful paid employment and what's more these schemes actually undermine the economy.

mrscumberbatch · 16/02/2012 19:49

Started another thread about this without searching facepalm

Read an article in guardian today that said that Sainsburys had withdrawn their support for this scheme.

I am definitely boycotting Tesco. We normally use them but they can gtfo.

And of course the bar for declaring people Fit to Work has been substantially lowered, so those still getting ESA are really very unwell/disabled, even in the WRAG.

Found a comparison between the test for Incapacity Benefit and the new test for ESA. Here's an example showing the sort of questions that have been cut:

2. Walking up and down stairs.
Old Qs:
2 (a) Cannot walk up and down one stair. 15 points.
2 (b) Cannot walk up and down a flight of twelve stairs. 15 points.
2 (c) Cannot walk up and down a flight of twelve stairs without holding on and taking a rest. 7 points.
2 (d) Cannot walk up and down a flight of twelve stairs without holding on. 3 points.
2 (e) Can only walk up and down a flight of twelve stairs if he goes sideways or one step at a time. 3 points.
2 (f) No problem in walking up and down stairs. 0 points.

New Qs
2 (a) Cannot walk up or down two steps unaided by another person. 9 points.
2 (f) No problem in walking up and down stairs. 0 points.

To get ESA, even in the WRAG, you need 15 points. Anyone who fails to get 15 points, onto JSA with you.

So the person who cannot walk up and down a flight of twelve stairs will get the same points as the hill-walking enthusiast next door. And once on JSA they can be sanctioned if they turn down a job or fail to complete a "work experience placement" - because after all they've been deemed Fit to Work.

MoreBeta · 16/02/2012 19:56

Clealry this has not been thought through by Govt.

They want to get unemployment down and they want long term unemployed to get some skills. That is good.

However, this scheme is economically a nonsense. If it carries on all firms will do is sack all their workers and bring in the same people on Workfare. The logical endpoint is every worker in the UK will be on Workfare. In addition, it gives large employers an unfair advantage over small firms who will not be able to access the Workfare scheme as easily or at all.

I want to see Govt stop subsididising the pay of workers and force firms to pay at least minimum wage. On top of that I want to see everyone on minimum wage taken completely out of paying tax or NI.

I do not want Govt subsidising employers or workers being paid nothing.

KalSkirata · 16/02/2012 19:58

There was a guy in a coma deemed 'fit for work' by ATOS because he didnt show for his assessment. His wife had written and explained he was in hospital in a coma so was a tad surprised to get the 'fit for work' letter.
What as? Draught excluder?

Or, maybe, Tory MP Grin

KalSkirata · 16/02/2012 19:59

Sounds sensible MoreBeta

molepom · 16/02/2012 20:00

I'm trying to wonder what Game Scameron is playing...

None of his propsals regarding the NHS or the Welfare bill make any sense what so ever. It's going to cost the country a hell of a lot more than the current systems do already - they are not cost cutting anything and are only making everything worse..it doesn't make sense.

Nilgiri · 16/02/2012 20:00

No worries, molepom. Didn't even realise it was aimed at me.

For the avoidance of doubt, dear government.

You cannot help/incentivise me to work by unpaid forced labour in a manual shop job. Because the only reason I'm not already working for an actual fee/salary is that I'm physically incapable of it.

Further, I may well be able to work in a few years' time. But I will still probably not be well enough to do a manual shop job.

molepom · 16/02/2012 20:00

Kal, earlier in the week somone DIED 2 days after being declared fit for work, and he wasnt the first to do so, nor I fear the last.

KalSkirata · 16/02/2012 20:04

I can beat that story Moleprom. A man died after his ATOS 'you are fit for work interview' of a heart attack before he had left the building having been declared 'fit for work'.

molepom · 16/02/2012 20:05
Shock
SardineQueen · 16/02/2012 20:10

Y'see right-wing doctrine says that if people really want it they can get it, money jobs are all just there for the asking if you just put the effort in, and someone really keen won't let a minor point like being dead get in the way of clawing their way up.

KateSpade · 16/02/2012 20:11

Noo thecook i wasn't sticking up for workfare, i was just pointing out that i work for free, as someone mentioned internships.

Minimathsmouse I dont agree with these workfare programs at all, they should be paying the staff at least minimum wage, but its another cost cutting - profit boosting thing for the companies that clearly don't make enough money.
annd.. an Ex-bf of mine had to go on a workfare program, met another girl whilst working at one of the said companies and left me for her!

Your comment on the interns who are bankrolled by mummy and daddy is something i totally agree with. me and my DD live with my parents, and they defiantly don't bank roll me, but a friend of mine is insanely bankrolled in her internship, i'm not jealous at all, my mum and dad give me everything they can, but argh, it makes me so effing angry!
I got a job at a really famous company in london paying £500 a month, i had to turn it down, just because i couldn't afford it. It was heartbreaking.
Out of Interest, are you still in the Fashion Industry?

minimathsmouse · 16/02/2012 20:13

I think it was the state of California that wanted Walmart out because it actually cost the state to have these shops. They subsidised walmarts low wages (food stamps) to the extent that it was crippling their local economy.

It sad that the very people that either produce or sell food are too poor to actually eat it? sounds a bit third world doesn't it?

KalSkirata it goes without saying that most Tory MPs are barking mad, maybe on that basis they should work for JSA and expenses only.

Vegansdownthestreet · 16/02/2012 20:14

It reminds me of Walmart in the states, makes households rely on tescos keeping their employees shopping there as its hard to afford not to.

DodieSmith · 16/02/2012 20:15

YANBU

MoreBeta · 16/02/2012 20:16

By the way. I wonder how many charities are laying of salaried workers and using Workfare staff. I saw it in a charity I volunteered for.

frankie76 · 16/02/2012 20:17

To the person who was told they are not making money in the uk - utter rubbish they are just not making more than last year it's still billions
I should know I worked at their head office and when I left guess what they never paid me for my last month - I had to chase for six weeks
Never shopped their since
They treat their staff awfully both st head office where I was and in store

Nilgiri · 16/02/2012 20:21

Sorry, couldn't resist. From a real case, apparently...

Lawyer: So, then it is possible that the patient was alive when you began the autopsy?
Witness: No.
Lawyer: How can you be so sure, Doctor?
Witness: Because his brain was sitting on my desk in a jar.
Lawyer: But could the patient have still been alive nevertheless?
Witness: It is possible that he could have been alive and practicing law somewhere.

SanctiMoanyArse · 16/02/2012 20:28

This is how it works.

Next year carers caring for someone on MR DLA lose exemption from working. if they don't work they get workfare or lose benefits. if they refuse workfare they lose all benefits. There is NO respite available to cover for work type commitments, very little childcare and even less availability if your cared for person is an adult.

So if you need help you get nothing and suck it up )who needs a roof or to eat? I mean those people on panorama in the US were OK in drains weren't they, barring the odd flood and the fact they live in Vegas so won;t freeze) or shove your loved one into social care.

Well actually you can;t get social care around here unless you abuse your child or are dying.

So, smack your kids / cared for person or stop eating? Who bloody knows- not me!

anniewoo · 16/02/2012 20:28

Why am I not surprised ? Tesco don't treat their customers much better.

SanctiMoanyArse · 16/02/2012 20:31

Oh and 31 people had died appealing ATOS a few weeks back so still rising.....

And before anyone says 'ah but if you tried...'

Actually I am blessed to have a husband who will work from home, of course finding work is still nigh on possible (what is it? 2.6 million unemployed plus all the people about to be forced back into work on carers so potentially a mill or two more then about 350k jobs or whatever it is) but I assume my almost_MA means I have a better chance at least.

I know I am fortunate, doesn't mean I won;t fight for everyone else. it's immoral and that the Government talks about Christianity at all disgusts me, as a Quaker.
