To think that anyone who thinks that any of the tattoos they have look nice?

Perriwinkle · 09/02/2012 16:30

I totally understand that people can think that the tattoos they have are meaningful to them personally (i.e names of children, references to deceased relatives/friends or meaningful pictures/symbols that represent importnant points in their lives etc) but if they think that they look outwardly nice to other people then I'm sorry but I have yet to see a nice tattoo and everyone I ever meet seems to agree.

They look uniformly godawful regardless of whether they're bufferlies, roses, fairies, swirls, Japanese lettering, names written in gothic font or pictures of Marilyn Monroe.

nah, i like the complete look. i don't like tattoos on their own, i love them as part of a look/style that could be many things across the board ie sailor (!), rocker, dyke etc, love the look, wish i had it!

NorksAkimbo · 10/02/2012 10:25

I have two myself, and I love them, and have received many unasked for compliments; they are meaningful and beautiful and YABU!!!

KellyKettle · 10/02/2012 10:35

I hope I don't out myself but my youngest brother has a tattoo of Jesus on his back. The words around it say "Only God Can Judge Me Now". He had it done when he was young & showing the school bullies that he didn't give a shit.

I actually cried laughing when he showed it to me. He is not at all religious, of all the tattoos he could have had to make a statement.

My mum saw it and said "Who's Judge Menow?". She thought it was a tattoo of a DJ or something.

He plans to get it lasered off.

GiveMummyTheWhizzer · 10/02/2012 10:40

YABU - the ones my DP has on his arms are lovely.

diddl · 10/02/2012 10:51

I don´t like tattoos & think that they rarely look nice.

But that´s why I don´t have any!

Doesn´t matter what I think of other people´s-I don´t have to live with them!

I have my ears pierced twice-some people probably think that it looks awful-but I did it for me to like-not them!

lydiathetattooedlady · 10/02/2012 11:36

ahhhh the old 'tattoos are disgusting' chestnut that rears its head every couple of months!
I have loads, i love them, i had them done for me, i couldn't give a rats what anybody else thinks. My recent chest one is for my brother who died aged 11 and is my most cherished.
I have never (apart from to my family), said what do you think of my tattoos. But i have had people who have randomly said they liked them. My business means i meet people of an older age to myself and ive not had any negative comments about them.
There are tattoos that do look horrible if not done correctly, and there are styles that personally i dont like but thats each to their own.
My profile is usually private but if anyone wants to see a couple of mine ive put two pics on there.

takingiteasy · 10/02/2012 13:46

YANBU to think, YABU to think that anyone else gives a fuck what you think.

Chattymummyhere · 10/02/2012 14:04

Who cares its not like "us demanted with tattoos" are making you get one!

I also love when people say they look cheap haha How can a tattoo that cost £100's look cheap "most" good tattoo's cost alot of money and people will travel miles to get them done at the right places.

I travel 2 hours to get my tattoos infact I got 3 last saturday (names btw) and I have a rather large one on my back. My DH has 3 names on him and a large tribal which cost £100's and took over 9hours to do!

I think there are different groups of those who dont like them

1; people who dont like them but dont care if others have them
2; people who would love one but are too scared to get one so show dislike in others

My grandmother has about 12 tattoo's she got her first in her late 50's!

Gonzo33 · 10/02/2012 15:49

I have 8 tattoo's. I can cover them all up with clothing if necessary. I like all of my tattoo's, and all of them have a meaning.

My main bug bear is peoples judgement of me because I have tattoo's.

Kayoe · 10/02/2012 16:08

YABVU - The only difference between tattooed and non-tattooed people is that tattooed people don't care if someone doesn't have tattoos.

I have a half sleeve, heading for a full sleeve, DP has both sleeves and a huge backpiece, all involving many hours of planning/sittings. A lot more thought goes into tattoos than a lot of non-tattooed people think!

diddl · 10/02/2012 16:17

"I can cover them all up with clothing if necessary."

Why should it be necessary, though & in what circumstances would you think it is?

Perriwinkle · 10/02/2012 16:59

I don't judge anyone for having tattoos. I've just never seen one that looks nice.

Perriwinkle · 10/02/2012 17:10

...And that includes any of the ones that I've seen photos of on this thread.

I'm sure that many tattoo artists, and people who design their own tattoos, are very talented artists but art on bodies just never looks nice IMHO.

Just my opinion and as far as I'm concerned I'm as entitled to hold it as people are to have tattoos.

It'd be a very boring life if we were all the same

"how can a tattoo that costs £100's look cheap"

very, very easily, IMHO.

However, I'm not suggesting that my view is the last word on tattoos. At all. If you love them and they enhance your life, great.

SensitivityChip · 10/02/2012 17:43

I hate them too. Permanant disfigurement does not equal art IMO and most I've seen look tacky but luckily enough, my opinions aren't law.

When I was about 19, tattoos were the in thing and I was desperate to get one done. So glad I didnt as I would now be mortified by the dolphin/rose/tribal art I would undoubtedly have chosen as a young, silly girl.

DH made noises about getting our DCs names tattooed on him when they were first born and he was in the first flushes of love and I asked him to wait and think about it properly. Whenever we see anybody with naff tattoos now he's really glad he didn't go through with it. It's up there with gold teeth and stick-on nails for me, sorry.

AWimbaWay · 10/02/2012 18:00

You are entitled to you opinion Perriwinkle, nobody is saying you aren't allowed to dislike tattoos, I don't, what we're saying is that in answer to your opening question you are being unreasonable to say nobody likes them, as I think this thread proves many people do.

Sandalwood · 10/02/2012 18:07

"How can a tattoo that cost £100's look cheap "
hahahaha

ElusiveCamel · 10/02/2012 18:12

How can a tattoo that cost £100's look cheap
Very, very easily!

I think the OP was badly worded though. There are loads of people who have never seen a tattoo they've liked and think that all of them are hideous. Which is fair enough. OP seemed to be suggesting that everyone held that opinion and that's patently ridiculous. There's no point arguing whether they're nice or not - it's too subjective and some truly are awful and hideous.

k8tykins · 10/02/2012 18:23

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, if you don't care what Perriwinkle thinks then why resppond? Each to their own and that is why we have mumsnet. Perriwinkle allowed not to like them, its not like she said she hated cats, then i'd be raging :)

NorthernGobshite · 10/02/2012 18:27

YABU, judgemental, offensive and plain ignorant.

FourThousandHoles · 10/02/2012 18:30

OP, if everyone hated tattoos or thought they looked cruddy then no-one would have them, would they?

I don't have any myself. I like the idea of them, especially ones that mean something symbolic (friend has a star for each of her dc's plus a teeny star representing the baby she miscarried for instance) but I'm yet to find an idea that that I like enough to have marked on me permanently. Also I think that some tatts that look nice on young women might look a bit naff on old ladies.

That doesn't mean that I don't think anyone should have them. It takes all sorts, we don't want to all be the same, etc etc etc

It's up to you whether or not you like tattoos or want one yourself, but to think that because you and a couple of your mates don't like them is BVU.
