To think that anyone who thinks that any of the tattoos they have look nice?

I totally understand that people can think that the tattoos they have are meaningful to them personally (i.e names of children, references to deceased relatives/friends or meaningful pictures/symbols that represent importnant points in their lives etc) but if they think that they look outwardly nice to other people then I'm sorry but I have yet to see a nice tattoo and everyone I ever meet seems to agree.

They look uniformly godawful regardless of whether they're bufferlies, roses, fairies, swirls, Japanese lettering, names written in gothic font or pictures of Marilyn Monroe.

I much prefer plain old skin

MarieLloyd · 09/02/2012 17:49

I think tats are utterly bizarre and would never get one, but each to their own.

As long its not Chinese bloody writing

PersonalClown · 09/02/2012 17:51

I am still convinced the chinese letters down my brothers arm is his usual order from The Chinese for when he is too pissed to speak coherently!!

KatieScarlett2833 · 09/02/2012 17:51

I don't like tattoos, mostly, to me they look cheap.

I would never, however, be so rude as to tell someone that.

Some opinions you should keep to yourself in RL.

This is one of them.

bradbourne · 09/02/2012 17:54

YANBU. I've yet to see the tattoo that looks nice as in "enhances the appearance of its wearer".

Some are ... not too bad and some demonstrate great skill on the part of the tattoo artist, I'll admit. But more often than not, they look like some kind of disfigurement to me rather than an enhancement of any kind.

It's a matter of personal taste in the end.

I dont like tattoos but that puff the magic dragon is amazing

diabolo · 09/02/2012 18:06

I don't want a tattoo, but I would defend anyone's right to choose to have one if they desire.

And I wouldn't make judgy comments about it in public, because you never know what the most conservative looking of people have got hidden under their clothes. Grin

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 09/02/2012 18:09

Perhaps you could post a picture of yourself OP, I'm sure I can find something about your appearance that I don't like?

MiladyGardenia · 09/02/2012 18:09

I wouldn't have one myself, but some are rather nice.

A few of the chaps at karate have them and they look very fetching on a muscular arm or chest.

Not that I look or anything. Am not a dirty old woman. Honest.

catgirl1976 · 09/02/2012 18:10

One of mine, which I got when vair young is Chinese writing that apparantly means "Excel"

It has turned out be very prophetic as I spend a huge amount of my life doing stuff with fecking spreadsheets.

Who knew?

KatieScarlett2833 · 09/02/2012 18:11

Unfair Beyond.

Ones appearance is due to gene pool. I had no choice in the brown eye/hair combo Mother Nature gave me.

One chooses to get a tattoo.

Not the same thing at all.

Sparklingbrook · 09/02/2012 18:12

I saw a girl on the till in a shop once. She had a beautiful tattoo on her arm that said 'Never Forgive, Never Forget. I would have loved to have asked her what it was about but feared it would be a) v rude to ask and b) a sad story. Sad

iklboo · 09/02/2012 18:12

I really don't like tattoos, but that's my preference. Some can affect people's judgment of a tattooed person (not saying it should, that's just how it is). Some are exceptional works of art that happen to be on skin.
(remembers a Tale of the Unexpected years ago where a masterpiece was tattooed on a bloke and he was killed & skinned for it, I think).

QuietTiger · 09/02/2012 18:13

It's personal preference. If you don't like tattoos, then that's fine for you.

You can judge me for having them all you like, because quite frankly I don't give a shit about your opinion of them because I don't need your approval to have one. I like "my" tattoos, I like certain tattoos on other people. Some are incredible pieces of artwork and some are naff and awful, like many things.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 09/02/2012 18:13

Ahh but Katie unless OP is a nudist who has never cut or coloured her hair, I'm sure I could find something Wink

clam · 09/02/2012 18:13

"I regard a person's tattoos as I would regard their clothes/accessories - they are how they choose to dress themselves."
The thing is, if your style changes, or you go off a certain look clotheswise, you can change it. With tattoos you're stuck with them for life. And I can't imagine many tattoos looking good once you're in your 70s and your skin is wrinkling and sagging.
Each to their own, of course. But I have never seen any tattoo that I think looks nice.

catgirl1976 · 09/02/2012 18:14

I have a dragon tatoo.

But I am not that girl.

I am a dragon though.

Grin

I'm sure I could too

BabyDubsEverywhere · 09/02/2012 18:18

70 year old saggy baggy skin looks shite regardless of tattoos!

SilentBoob · 09/02/2012 18:21

OH GOOD LORD.

I have just googled the Puff the Magic dragon tattoo.

trice · 09/02/2012 18:23

Actually I think that tattoos really brighten up old and wrinkly skin. My gramps had a clipper ship on his forearm and we loved to make up stories about it. When everything is going south surely what you need is a colourful accent?

I love my tattoos. I like them on other people too. They are very revealing.
