To think that anyone who thinks that any of the tattoos they have look nice?

I totally understand that people can think that the tattoos they have are meaningful to them personally (i.e names of children, references to deceased relatives/friends or meaningful pictures/symbols that represent importnant points in their lives etc) but if they think that they look outwardly nice to other people then I'm sorry but I have yet to see a nice tattoo and everyone I ever meet seems to agree.

They look uniformly godawful regardless of whether they're bufferlies, roses, fairies, swirls, Japanese lettering, names written in gothic font or pictures of Marilyn Monroe.

I don't like tattoo's - have never seen one I like & don't think I ever will - yes some designs may be brilliant but even then they would be better on another medium on the wall.

I fully accept that those who like tattoo's they don't care what I think or want my opinion.

mrscumberbatch - I can see how it is traditional art & would be highly valued by some people. Still doesn't mean I like it - although I also don't like some art by other well respected artists - everyone is different

Sorry spelt butterflies wrong, I've got a few keys that stick. I do know how to spell it - honest.

your title makes no sense.

And I think the word you are flailing aimlessly for is perspective. Or perhaps objective. People like different things, shocker. Hmm

TheresASpareChairOverThere · 09/02/2012 16:48

hahaha, I did google the puff the magic dragon tattoo Blush

erm. By that I mean as pictures, not skinning people or anything!

darn...I was eagerly anticpating getting a tattoed human skin for my wall.

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney · 09/02/2012 16:50

I just googled the puff the magic dragon tattoo, wowser, I think it's half awesome half insane!!!!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 09/02/2012 16:51

I don't like them at all on anyone but that's just a matter of taste. I can see that some are better than others and that some are indeed beautiful if you like tattoos, therefore YABU.

Perriwinkle · 09/02/2012 16:51

"Funny, my tattoos recieve many, many compliments. "

Well, that's interesting because I wonder just how genuine many of those compliments are...?

I think that very often people are far too polite to say that tattoos are awful (although they often think it) so politely say they're nice instead or comment on how clever the artwork is or something.

I've lost count of the number of times that I've been in a group and someone with a tatoo has been there and shown it and everyone has said how nice it is and then said "ugghhh" as soon as that person has walked away. Personally, I choose never to comment because I don't think it's nice to be so two faced.

It's like any art. I was literally stunned by a Van Gogh I saw recently yet there were people in the gallery just walking past. They didn't see what I saw.

I have a fair amount of art in my house ranging from an oil painting I inherited to the phrase "Welcome to Thailand" which is written in felt tip (the artist did it in front of me and held her pen in a most intriguing way). I'm currently making a display board for my stepson's artwork and have a canvas print of one of my own photos. I also have a work of art that I get to take with me wherever I go.

I think if someone couldn't find at least one piece among my collection that they liked then I'd probably think them a bit odd but equally I'd be amazed if someone loved everything.

Yet there isn't a thread about thinking oil paintings of woodlands that your parents bought in a shop in Worcester is there?

theincredibequeenofwands · 09/02/2012 16:52

Here's a nice tattoo.

Very odd, but nicely done!

YABU. It's a matter of personal taste.

mrscumberbatch · 09/02/2012 16:52

LoonyRationalist- yes everyone is different.

OP- take note.

I don't like your MN name. But it doesn't mean you made a bad choice in choosing it.

lesley33 · 09/02/2012 16:56

YABU it is a matter of personal taste. Personally don't like any tattoos though. And yes I have complimented others tattoos. But I think it is being polite. They have already had it done so it is just rude at that stage to say you don't like it. Ask me about a tattoo before you have it done and I am more likely to be honest.

ValarMorghulis · 09/02/2012 16:57

no, far better to hide behind an anonymous screen name before rudely offending a large percentage of the population

FaverOliverTwist · 09/02/2012 16:57

Hahaa queenofwands - that took a while to work out.
Ouch! Must have hurt.

YABU - I love looking at them and have seen many lovely ones. Would have told you that if you asked, but luckily we haven't met Wink

tanfastic · 09/02/2012 16:59

It's personal taste. I don't happen to like them on women to be honest but I'd never tell anyone they look awful. I do however find them incredibly attractive on men as long as they've not gone overboard.

NettoSuperstar · 09/02/2012 17:01

I like my tattoos, and since they are on my body, that's all that counts.

TheresASpareChairOverThere · 09/02/2012 17:02

OP your latest post is annoying. Just to be clear - I have said I like some people's tattoos because I LIKED THEM. And if I didn't like them, it wouldn't mean I was right and the person with the tattoo was wrong. Do you understand anything at all about subjectivity?

spartafc · 09/02/2012 17:11

I like some tattoos.
I also like punctuation. So that's two things from your OP that lead me to think YABU.

lisaro · 09/02/2012 17:13

OP - first a neighbours washing and now tattoos. May I suggest you get something of interest in your life then you wouldn't be bitching and whining offended by other people's ways or tastes.

WhereYouLeftIt · 09/02/2012 17:14

"if they think that they look outwardly nice to other people"
I regard a person's tattoos as I would regard their clothes/accessories - they are how they choose to dress themselves. Do people dress themselves to look outwardly nice to other people? Or do they dress themselves to make a statement about themselves (to themselves as well as to others), or maybe to follow fashion, or maybe to signal membership of a group (uniform) or subculture (e.g. Goth, hippy)?

I think, OP, that I'm trying to make the point that "looking outwardly nice to other people" is not a consideration for many people, maybe even most people.
