To think that anyone who thinks that any of the tattoos they have look nice?

I totally understand that people can think that the tattoos they have are meaningful to them personally (i.e names of children, references to deceased relatives/friends or meaningful pictures/symbols that represent importnant points in their lives etc) but if they think that they look outwardly nice to other people then I'm sorry but I have yet to see a nice tattoo and everyone I ever meet seems to agree.

They look uniformly godawful regardless of whether they're bufferlies, roses, fairies, swirls, Japanese lettering, names written in gothic font or pictures of Marilyn Monroe.

My tattoos are beautiful. As are DP's. As are those of my friends.

The OP may live under a bridge though.

HTH.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 09/02/2012 18:25

OP, are you young?

I've never heard a younger person express the kind of hatred for tattoos that some older people have...?

catgirl1976 · 09/02/2012 18:28

I googled the Puff the Magic Dragon tatoo

I looks very sweet and I want to pet it, then I remember it is a penis, not a sweet little creature and no longer want to pet it.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 09/02/2012 18:32

Poor puff, he pierced his head
New AIBU thread, AIBU to think it is morally wrong to pierce your dragon as they are unable to consent...?

cocolepew · 09/02/2012 18:39

this is a work of art

Denj33 · 09/02/2012 18:44

Mine are lovely
DHs are lovely
Don't care if you don't like them
Maybe we should pick something else to rant about- how about people who color their hair?? (I do that too btw, I must look disgraceful to OP)

IneedAbetterNicknameIn2012 · 09/02/2012 18:45

All the tattoos linked to are amazing (and weird)
I don't have any tattoos, I want one though just haven't decided where I want it.
My Uncle doesn't have a mm of untattood skin on either arm. He also has them on his head, neck, legs and back.
I have seen some amazing tattoos and some down right shit ones, but hey each to their own!

megapixels · 09/02/2012 18:47

YANBU to find them all ugly but that is simply your personal opinion. Looks like a lot of people out there like the look of tattoos.

FWIW I think they're absolutely hideous.

jalopy · 09/02/2012 18:49

They make the skin look grubby, up close or at a distance.

MsVelvet · 09/02/2012 18:49

YABU Why do give a shit?!

I quite like this one

NoOnesGoingToEatYourEyes · 09/02/2012 18:52

Catgirl that tattoo is amazing!

ginandcatatonic · 09/02/2012 18:53

I'm tattooed, pierced, have two-tone colour hair. My choice, as I live my own life. Thank you.

Red2011 · 09/02/2012 18:54

A friend of mine has some beautiful tattoos, although they're not placed where I would wish to have any (on the forearm and by the thumb). However, that hasn't put me off. I want to get a tat, but not yet sure where I'm having it...hip or shoulder. I'm guessing either place would hurt anyway.

To be honest I don't care if anyone else likes them or not, they're a personal choice.

Shall we move on to piercings, trans- and micro-dermal implants, body modification and hair? :)

Velvetcu · 09/02/2012 18:54

I paid for my nan to have her first tattoo 4 years ago for Christmas, she was 68 and loves it!

Denj33 · 09/02/2012 18:54

Oh, I'm pierced as well (tongue and belly button)
Forgot to mention that
I bet OP hates piercings as well

there's some corkers on here Grin

SlinkingOutsideInFrocks · 09/02/2012 18:57

I've only ever seen one or two that I think look alright, but they're not for me, so it doesn't matter.

DH has a small design on his lower calf - meh - it's alright.

I think unblemished skin is sexiest, but that's just my personal opinion and so what I choose for me.

ginandcatatonic · 09/02/2012 18:58
Haziedoll · 09/02/2012 18:59

I think tattoos look awful but thats just my opinion. Lots of old school mates upload photos of their photos on fb and everyone is always gushing about them. Each to their own.

SlinkingOutsideInFrocks · 09/02/2012 19:07

The ones that look alright are generally unique and quite personal.

I can't get my head around having a design on my body that I'm stuck with for life. IMO, tattoos go against everything we as humans appreciate about fashion and style, in that these change and evolve so much as the years go by, whereas you choose a tattoo, it never changes and is always pinpointed to the era you got it. People who would never wear the same style of clothes for decades on end, somehow don't mind having the same tattoo branded onto their body for all to see forever...

What I mean is - it's great if you've chosen something that is meaningful to you and that's all that really matters, but a lot of these 'personal' tattoos are really trend-based (so you have to wonder exactly how personal they really are, and how much of it is just picking up on what's currently in).

There must be a lot of people out there with things like...

  1. Roses on boobs
  2. Tribal arm-bands
  3. Tramp stamps ( :-/ for want of a better term)
  4. Chinese symbols
  5. Etc...

Who are cringing now at how dated these look...

This is why I'd never have one aside from my preference for unblemished skin. What I liked in my teens and 20s is so far removed from what I like now.

Now I'm sure everyone on here has very individual, unique designs which will see them through their lifetime Wink but you also have to admit that there are vast swathes of people with these //\ sorts of rather Hmm designs as well.

MissMap My friend has hairdressing scissors tattoo too. It's cute, and like you said people never ask what she does!
