I know that this post may have some mixed reviews and may even get me slated but I can,t help it.
Someone I know although she is a genuine case her and her husband have as much as me and dh coming in and with a brand new car thrown in for good measure.
I can only dream of a new car and I work my tripe off 5 days a week as well as dh whilst some people can sit at home and get the same income coming in it seems really unfair.

Um, so she is a "genuine" case so why on earth should she not have as much as you? Are you better than her? Deserve more even though she's "genuine"?

YABU.

ShellyBoobs · 08/01/2012 16:10

..so why on earth should she not have as much as you

I would imagine that OP expects to be better off working, than not?

I think people that are living a luxury lifestyle whilst on benefits must be cheating the system in some way. Benefits don't pay out enough to enable the claimant to have brand new cars and luxury holidays, well not to anyone I know who has claimed benefits anyway.

I do know someone who lived like a millionaire whilst on income support once; she was getting her IS, working cash in hand, getting money from her rich daddy and getting money from her son's father whilst pretending she didn't know who her son's father was so the CSA wouldn't chase him!

redwineformethanks · 08/01/2012 16:12

I do agree that (in very general terms) people who work should see some financial benefit as a result and I think it is galling to work very hard and then think "Why did I bother?" However, I do some work with people on benefits and the majority of them are not finding it so easy / comfortable.

edam · 08/01/2012 16:12

Envy will eat you up. Let it go. Worry about your own stuff, not anyone else's.

akaemmafrost · 08/01/2012 16:12

But she's genuine. I take this to mean she is unable to work. So her life should be shit and she should be worse off than the OP by default?

WorraLiberty · 08/01/2012 16:12

Ahhh a good old benefit bashing thread...not seen one for a while Grin

It all depends what you mean by 'genuine' case really.

But either way, why would you be jealous of people with no jobs?

WhingingNinja · 08/01/2012 16:13

I feel for you.

If you pm me your address I will happily come maim you in order for you to live the high life on all the free money and swan about in a new cat.

WorraLiberty · 08/01/2012 16:14

Lol @ new 'cat' Grin

chocaddict · 08/01/2012 16:14

well I have seen many a person get disability allowance or anything else for that matter and they are quite capable of doing many a task.

OP posts:
akaemmafrost · 08/01/2012 16:14

Yeah you have a disability, you are unable to improve your life but I definitely SHOULD have more, well just because.

stressheaderic · 08/01/2012 16:14

I know quite a few mothers who deliberately work 16 hours so they can access child tax credits to pay for childcare. They all say 'why should I work full time just to get the same money, I'd be working for nothing'. This annoys me.

akaemmafrost · 08/01/2012 16:15

Examples?

WorraLiberty · 08/01/2012 16:15

well I have seen many a person get disability allowance or anything else for that matter and they are quite capable of doing many a task

YY but what does that have to do with this 'genuine' case?

Pagwatch · 08/01/2012 16:17

Really? You have seen many people get disability allowance and you know for a fact that they are capable of consistently working? Really?

akaemmafrost · 08/01/2012 16:17

Well I'll be honest on my forty years I've never seen ANYONE on DLA who was capable of doing "many a task". Just wondering where you come across ALL these capable disabled people OP?

chocaddict · 08/01/2012 16:18

well without going inot too much detail they are both capable of doing jobs but due to some health concerns the one is staying at home to look after the other.
However alot of the problems have been self inflicted

OP posts:
akaemmafrost · 08/01/2012 16:18

Grin at "new cat"!

littleducks · 08/01/2012 16:18

I agree that tabu/yanbu depend if the car is new because they can afford a new car or if it is a mobility car.

I have a friend who gets partial HB 'because London rents are so high nobody can afford them'.......she is a SAHM, her kids are 7, 11, 13. Her husband works for decent pay but not every day and nit long hours. They have a big house and a newer car than us.

We pay full rent and have younger children so dh works long hours and I am a full time student do have loans and nhs bursary.

I feel green at times (and wish she had never told me tbh) but try to ignore it as they aren't commenting fraud.

I see where you are coming from op. I have a relative who is registered disabled and recently gave up smoking. Told us they were now saving £70 a week by not smoking. I was a bit Confused shocked they could afford £70 a week to smoke in the first place. But otoh he is genuinely disabled and part of me doesn't really grudge any of that money. Maybe the solution would be to increase wages so that there was a real incentive and benefit to working, so that it would always be better than being unemployed.

akaemmafrost · 08/01/2012 16:20

I'd get over to the. DM forums if I were you OP, you'll be welcomed with open arms.

Boffyflow · 08/01/2012 16:20

I agree with you and I know of several families who have as good lifestyle than me (I work full time). Although the families I know are 'sort of' genuine, in each case they have hammed it up to get more than they're entitled to.

One example is a family who have had two motability cars for years. The middle aged son has one top of the range car - he allegedly has a disability but is a regular recreational footballer and gym member. The elderly father has a car for his wife - who has never, EVER, even sat in the car, as she is too obese and immobile to get in a car of any kind. The car is the elderly father's pride and joy - a top of the range vehicle which he never admits is his wife's motability car. When he takes his wife out they use a taxi with a wheelchair ramp.

This particular family also claim something called Direct Payments, by which they pay various family members to 'do jobs (gardening, shopping)' for them, but it's all a bit of a fiddle iykwim.
