I know that this post may have some mixed reviews and may even get me slated but I can,t help it.
Someone I know although she is a genuine case her and her husband have as much as me and dh coming in and with a brand new car thrown in for good measure.
I can only dream of a new car and I work my tripe off 5 days a week as well as dh whilst some people can sit at home and get the same income coming in it seems really unfair.

Mme hope so BUT he's doing a cancer thing with his DIL who ahd major surgery so if he prefers to allow her to elad I would understand I think.

DanJARMouse · 09/01/2012 21:24

yep, and you can get a 3 bed semi for £450 a MONTH up here.

I will be renting a small 2/3 bed (3rd room off the second and a box) for £500 a month when we move.

Our current HA house is less than £300 a MONTH rent.

But of course, there are no bloody jobs up here!

MmeLindor. · 09/01/2012 21:26

Tricky thing with penalising the unemployed - even long term unemployed - is that right now jobs are fecking hard to come by.

How can you justify punishing someone for not being able to find a job.

I get what you mean - those who are lazy feckers but how to ascertain that i s the case?

And lets not even get into Workfare.

TheRealTillyMinto · 09/01/2012 21:34

MmeLindor but only 4% prioritised family size when asked to do so (i.e. only 4% really bothered about it). the immigrants in my family neither feed their children nor heat their houses. they are like that you know (i dont think you read my post! i wasnt suggesting discriminating against my own family)

Peachy like the cameron/satan joke. best bit of this thread!

TotemPole · 09/01/2012 21:38

Tilly, 62% of the original 1000 said they wanted benefits capped for people who have 'too many children'.

76% say that some groups of people should have their benefits cut

This 76% of the original 1000 would then have been asked to choose which groups. Maybe family sized wasn't one of the choices for that particular question.

MmeLindor. · 09/01/2012 21:39

Sorry, Tilly. I did read your post but just meant that the poll either asked some very leading questions or asked some weird folk about their opinions.

It simply would not have occurred to me to ask people if these two groups should have their benefits capped/limited.

Sevenfold · 09/01/2012 21:40

Boffyflow what shit
you miss the point that disabled people often do work......DLA IS NOT AN OUT OF WORK BENEFIT
I do love the bullshit on this thread, the uneducated oh I know someone crap.
what bollocks

MmeLindor. · 09/01/2012 21:42

And we should all remember the old saying, "Never believe statistics that you haven't made up yourself"

:)

What I mean is; it is easy to get caught up in statistics, but these stats are based on the common perception of benefit fraud, which has (in other polls! Ha!) been shown to be totally out of whack with the actual facts of benefit fraud.

People widely overestimate the occurrence of benefit fraud, and even if it is more than the 0.5% it is no where near as prevalent as commonly perceived.

TheRealTillyMinto · 09/01/2012 21:43

MmeLindor dont understand why you think i would support discriminating against migrants.

MmeLindor. · 09/01/2012 21:47

Tilly
I am not talking about you, I am talking about the poll. The fact that they asked the question at all surprised me.

And that it was the group of benefit recipients that most would like to see having their benefits cut.

I see no co-relation between benefits and immigrants in their being more or less eligible than British citizens, so was surprised that they even asked that Q.

alemci · 09/01/2012 22:29

I would have thought the public may have perceived immingrants as less eligibe because they may not have made any NI contributions or is this irrelevant?

alemci · 09/01/2012 22:29

eligible

sashh · 10/01/2012 06:20

I will swap you my 'free car' anyday for the ability to walk without pain.

BTW although DLA can be swapped for a car the user has to pay for any adaptions - in my case that is £1500 - I have to find that every three years. Fine if I'm working but not fine when I'm not able to.

I do have a flat screen TV and leather furniture - bought when I was working, should they be taken away from me now?

Acumenoop · 10/01/2012 07:22

How are we all this morning? Only 4,220 people, or less than 0.3% of JSA claimants, are long term unemployed (5 years or more). Fun fact!

I do not have a flat screen telly! I don't have any telly at all, or a car, a tumble drier, a dvd player, a games console, a hairdryer, a toaster, a hoover, a mobile phone... Or a jewelry cleaning wobble box or a full size oven or a coffee machine or an electric kettle, a stereo, or, god, I can't think of any more meaningless pieces of consumer electronics. Who cares!

I've got a bloody amazing computer though. Wheee.

Dillydaydreaming · 10/01/2012 07:32

Think the OP has long gone Acumen - left when people told her she was being very unreasonable in envying those with a disability.

lesley33 · 10/01/2012 08:24

Are you sure it is only 4220? I have seen the figures for our city and they are high. Do you have a link?

Sevenfold · 10/01/2012 08:42

only 8 more posts and this vile thread will be full

Sevenfold · 10/01/2012 08:42

did the op ever come back or was it a troll?

Peachy · 10/01/2012 08:47

'I would have thought the public may have perceived immingrants as less eligibe because they may not have made any NI contributions or is this irrelevant?'

At the end of the day these polls are only worth the writer and their agenda.

Immigrants is a question that showed that poll up as so very flawed! Illegal immigrants? EU immigrants (whilst I am willing to debate that it is at least reciprocal in that we are also entitled to benefits elsewhere if we choose- and I have 'friends' who DO choose)- and how many people know difference between legal and illegal anyway- sadly my experience is very few. And how long were they here- is someone here for a decade still an immigrant? What about the family near Grandad who came here when Mum was a child yet the village still knows as 'those immigrants' even though they probably own as much property as the rest of the village together?

cory · 10/01/2012 08:51

a) the poll only shows what people believe about benefit fraud- not what is actually going on; if you had done a poll about the effects of Jewish business in 1930s Germany you might have come up with some fairly unpleasant results: it wouldn't actually have told you a thing about what effects Jewish business did or did not have on the RL economy

b) depending on what questions were asked and how they were asked, you may not even learn that much about people's actual priorities; they may be limited by the questions

We had a recent poll at work concerning certain changes in workplace equipment. It was only after I was halfway through filling it in that I realised that the questions were all based on ranking the changes from slightly positive to very positive- there was no place to say that you thought they were disastrous. As I had time to think about my answers (not being on the phone), I decided not to answer and to contact the people doing the polling to complain. But most of my colleagues hadn't even noticed the skewed nature of the poll. And on the phone I expect I might have struggled with putting my views across or even noticing that I was being led in a certain direction.

Jux · 10/01/2012 08:51

Filling up the thread.

entropyglitter · 10/01/2012 08:52

bye bye

Peachy · 10/01/2012 08:53

Well exactly Cory

But then given the complete lack of media response to the report yesterday the answer is that people are not allowed to know; when the media does not report people are denied knowledge and reality.

I suspect most are quite happy that way.
