I know that this post may have some mixed reviews and may even get me slated but I can,t help it.
Someone I know although she is a genuine case her and her husband have as much as me and dh coming in and with a brand new car thrown in for good measure.
I can only dream of a new car and I work my tripe off 5 days a week as well as dh whilst some people can sit at home and get the same income coming in it seems really unfair.

Littleducks....studying is a luxury these days. You chose that

chocaddict · 08/01/2012 16:22

Me and dh really struggle on our combined income of 25000 it sucks and we are both out at work fulltime and have really old cars we can,t afford to replace.
We get no help in any way as combined income is over the threshold for eveything

Boffy if the cars are 'top of the range' then they will have paid thousands on top to get them.

Acumenoop · 08/01/2012 16:24

Oh agreed, OP, well jell. My DP doesn't get out of bed for £6000; as an income it's everything he dreamed of. If you're really considering it, you know, anyone can get higher rate DLA and a mobility car. You can get it. It's an option! Simply hack at your spine until you irreparably damage the cord. It's £6,000 a year or £3,327 if you take the car, so you'll definitely be quids in.

Make sure you go for c1 - c6 (the neck) or you'll only get middle rate and then where will you be.

Onesunnymorningin2012 · 08/01/2012 16:24

OP, you should read up about DLA. If the people concerned have got a Motability car, it's on a lease and isn't actually 'theirs' IYSWIM.

DLA is hard to get (40+ page form & evidence) and is given to people with life-changing disabilities to help them cope with the additional costs of being disabled. It's available for qualifying people in and out of work.

If someone is on DLA and wants a Motability car, their entire DLA is taken to pay for the lease of the car.

akaemmafrost · 08/01/2012 16:25

GypsyMoth · 08/01/2012 16:25

Well make cutbacks op

Have you got a huge mortgage? Credit card debts?

chocaddict · 08/01/2012 16:26

Yes I understand that they do lose some of their dla about half

OP posts:
Kellogg · 08/01/2012 16:27

I can't imagine anyone actively wanting someone to be worse off than them.

wubblybubbly · 08/01/2012 16:28

Tell you what, I'll do you a swap.

You have my £125 a week and my terminal cancer and I'll wear your massive fucking judgy pants.

callmemrs · 08/01/2012 16:28

There are some aspects of the system that are daft - which is why they are in the process of being reformed.
Like stress head, I know several women who choose to limit their working hours to 2 days a week, so they meet the 16 hours criteria. That's ridiculous- that public funds are then putting these women in the same position financially as a woman with a better work ethic who works 5 days

I also personally know of 2 women who deliberately limited their working hours to part time, so that their teenage kids qualified for EMA , before that was reformed. In each case, the parents were separated and the father was loaded, and actually paid school fees for the teenagers! I don't see how anyone can agree that's a reasonable use of public money- for privileged 6th formers in a fee paying school to be paid £120 per month out of public funds. However, it was all perfectly legal. They only had to claim main residence with their mother, who then deliberately kept her earnings low, to qualify.

However, anomalies like this aside, its daft to be envious of someone who will never have the advantages of a decent career, will never be able to have a decent pension etc and is basically living at the whim of whatever the govt cuts next. It's also statistically means any children are more likely to end up jobless if they have one or both parents unemployed.
So really- there's not much to envy.

akaemmafrost · 08/01/2012 16:29

It's the word "hate" in the title that really bothers me to be honest.

chocaddict · 08/01/2012 16:29

We ap about £455 on the mortage not that massive compared to some.
There is some credit card debt due to things like car repairs as we don,t have enough income left over to pay for them

OP posts:
akaemmafrost · 08/01/2012 16:29

Sad wubblybubbluy

Acumenoop · 08/01/2012 16:30

loopsylou

Why do you hate disabled people? Seriously? You want to starve all severely disabled people to death by their 19th birthday?

I know people have their "opinions" on MN but JESUS CHRIST THAT IS EVIL.

Kellogg · 08/01/2012 16:31

I can't afford a new car, that is life . I would rather enjoy the things I have than be envious of those who have things that in reality don't matter .

Maybe I should be pissed off that you have bought your own house and I rent .

They did indeed pay large deposits for the cars. They saved up the money from their benefits and both have the most expensive vehicle they can afford. They can also manage to save up for a holiday and several weekend breaks each year.
None of them works or has any sort of private income. This is absolutely true, I know for a fact as they are v. close to a member of my family.

Ffs you can have a genuine disability that isn't obvious. Argh. This tripe is really offensive.

antsypants · 08/01/2012 16:34

If it is one thing that I resent it is this culture of entitlement... Who ever said that by working you were suppose to have things better at other people less fortunately expense? How dare you act as if the world owes you something for getting off your arse and doing what you are supposed to be doing. How is that any different than sitting on the dole?

If it is one thing I have learnt it is that for every person who can manipulate the system there are 100 who depend on it to live, and in terms of the way disabilities are seen in this country, well, it seems that every excuse is rolled out to try and find a point of fault on why many depend on the system... Why not point your ire at the system that is bent until breaking point not by the people who depend on it, but by the people who manage it.

chocaddict · 08/01/2012 16:34

why do you rent kellogg it very often costs more anyway

OP posts:
GypsyMoth · 08/01/2012 16:34

Not many people on benefits are able to get a mortgage or credit card op!!! So if something breaks/goes wring, like your car, then they simply have to go without!!

So see? You are in a better position by working...
