I got a stuffed chicken, fuck buying a turkey for the prices they want for them, and they are so dry.

June2008 · 23/12/2011 20:40

Er no! Dh came home with our turkey today (along with a 'ham' that the butcher talked him into) and had paid £65!!!

OhTheConfusion · 23/12/2011 20:40

Fabby, it may be the christmas spirit talking, but for once... I agree! Xmas Wink

We have a small turkey breast joint-it was £12. DH said they are far more expensive than last year.

I am a bit bah humbug because I only like the light meat and can't bear the turkey carcass hanging about, Grin

OhTheConfusion · 23/12/2011 20:41

Oh June, our ham was £25 too!!!

oh dear,
we are quite lucky that we get ours from DPs godfather as a gift, it's horrid really how expensive everything is, criminal.

Flyonthewindscreen · 23/12/2011 20:42

Was shocked also. I ordered a 4.5kg turkey from a local butcher with great reputation and it was £42 when I went to pick it up today. Wouldn't mind but I am veggie so won't actually be eating the bugger!

MetalSian · 23/12/2011 20:42

My brother got one free from his boss at work today.
No idea why.
But it is sorted now xD.

LordOfTheFlies · 23/12/2011 20:42

HaHa Quorn vegetarian roast - less than £3.

tastes like the cardboard box it comes in needs a good ,well flavoured gravy though.

And no bones to worry about Xmas Wink

MoreBeta · 23/12/2011 20:42

The cost of feed grain and fuel has gone up a lot this year so cost of rearing turkeys has gone up a lot.

ThatVikRinA22 · 23/12/2011 20:43

wow!

i got a free range turkey, feeds 4 - 7 from Waitrose, cost £23.80. and my ham was £13 i think.

troisgarcons · 23/12/2011 20:43

if you leave it until the last minute, you pay through the nose.

I bought a stuffed crown, a ham, a pork and a beef (and to give you some idea, the beef was the smallest of the four,I cut it into 3 joints which did 5 people each time) for 40 quid in November and froze them.

might i add ours is 13.5kg this year ... we asked for he's smallest one Xmas Hmm

wouldn't it be nice if the supermarkets thought 'actually we are going to make a bunch off of all the other crap they will buy so we'll cut them some slack'

twats.

TheLaineyWayIsEssex · 23/12/2011 20:44

I couldn't believe the prices of fresh ones in Waitrose today. We got our fresh one from an auction last week. 15lb for £18. In waitrose equivalent size well over £40. Just hope it is ok as been hanging in FIL shed for half the week until I deemed it too warm so now in fridge.
We may yet be eating chicken Hmm

ReduceRecycleRegift · 23/12/2011 20:46

I got a 6-10 person one from M&S for less than £30. Their norfolk bronze ones were massive prices though

PurpleCrazyHorse · 23/12/2011 20:46

We've bought chicken for that very reason. Unfortunately not a great choice in our supermarket due to a million turkeys taking up all the chiller space but loads cheaper. In fact our whole Morrisons bill for Christmas day + some little extras was £36.

Groovee · 23/12/2011 20:46

Our butcher does cooked sliced turkey breast for £30. It feeds around 12 and is worth the expense

DonInKillerHeels · 23/12/2011 20:46

Why does anyone buy ANYTHING from M&S FFS??? It's better than average quality, sure, but so is Waitrose, and Waitrose is MUCH cheaper.

I hate M&S with a passion. I hate the fact that they are our closest convenience store is an M&S because it's SO FUCKING EXPENSIVE for stuff that would be half the price if it were Waitrose. Let's not even mention if it were a Lidl

OhTheConfusion · 23/12/2011 20:46

13.5kg turkey.... please say you are feeding the street?

baubleybobbityhat · 23/12/2011 20:49

I bought a poncetastic free range Norfolk black thingy turkey crown from Sainsbury's, feeds 6-7. £32!!! £32 and it doesn't even have legs Xmas Shock.

LittleMissHumbuggery · 23/12/2011 20:49

Meat hamper: 9lb turkey, big chicken, pork, gammon and beef joints (about 2lb each), sausage meat and bacon and a large pork pie cost me £50 from my local butcher. One of the few things I like about Christmas, as he joints the turkey for me, and the other joints get halved and frozen. Lasts us ages!

OhTheConfusion · 23/12/2011 20:50

M&S is close to home, waitrose is the other side of town and would mean sitting in horrid christmas traffic with kids and baby :(

Are the turey auctions any good TheLainey? They have one in the next town, may try that next year.

OhTheConfusion · 23/12/2011 20:51

Ha Baubley, lack of legs made ma giggle! Grin
