Hate to be contrary, but what is criminal is cheap food and wasted food.
Most people will throw so much food away this week. How many will actually use ALL the food they moan about the prices of buy?

OhTheConfusion · 24/12/2011 07:51

Weevil, DH and I are both keen cooks and we have a plan for almost every last piece of the leftovers:

Sandwiches (DS and I love turkey sandwiches!),
Traditional turkey curry on boxing day (nan breads are waiting in the fridge)
Christmas 'chowder' Jamie Oliver style,,
Pot of homemade soup with the leftover ham that dosn't make it into the sandwiches and the turkey carcas will make a pot of stock!

This is the first time we've done turkey (previously have done chicken, beef, venison) so it did seem pricey but is a 4-7 people size FR bronze one for £40. There's just us and the two dd's so we've planned two more days of meals out of it once we've carved off the best bits.

MorelliOrRanger · 24/12/2011 08:01

I bought a free range turkey (asked for a 10lb one but she didn't have any so she she sold me a 14lb turkey for the same price as a 10lb one. £44 - eek.

We're feeding 7 (for about 2 weeks looking at the size of it). :)

marriedandwreathedinholly · 24/12/2011 08:35

Can't remember what we paid last year. This year have bought a Waitrose Plumpie for 8-11. Looks good and cost £33.00. Don't order them anymore have had Bronze birds that were deeply disapointing and an emergency economy bird from Asda that was fabulous.

Only have lovely Christmas food in for today, tomorrow and boxing day. Looked at the hams but they were over priced and will nip out on boxing day to see what's reduced. Thinking cheese selections, hams and perhaps a nice rib of beef or hugely reduced whole salmon.

FrankincenseStellaAndFries · 24/12/2011 08:41

We got a massive chicken for £7. None of us are keen on turkey and we're off to my parents on boxing day so no need for left over meats.

TroublesomeEx · 24/12/2011 08:43

YANBU.

I won't be indulging in the festive meat eating, but this year DH surprised me by coming home with a Free Range chicken and said that even he couldn't justify spending the amount they wanted on a turkey.

2rebecca · 24/12/2011 10:02

Free range goose £70. I decided if I was going to spend a fortune on a roast bird I'd have something different. Geese scare me a bit so I'm quite happy to eat them where as turkeys seem a bit sad.

CroissantNeuf · 24/12/2011 13:22

DP has just got back from picking up the turkey from the butchers and I am still hyperventilating at the cost so came on here as I hoped/knew there would be a thread about the cost of turkeys that would reassure me and bring my heart rate down.

Ours (well I say 'ours' but I'm veggie so not even going to be eating the thing) is 6.5kg and cost £68

Xmas Shock

We bought a lamb shoulder for Boxing Day (in-laws are providing christmas day lunch) and that cost us £17. It's big enough to feed 6 adults and a cluster of kids.

Local butcher for a local farm.

Turkey is over rated try something different.

ThePathanKhansWitch · 24/12/2011 13:52

Fook! Realitree i want the bastard to get up, peel the veg, set the table, and do a quick jazz hands number for that money!

Nancy66 · 24/12/2011 14:00

Mine was £65 and it's covered in horrible black feather stubs.

looks like it's got the pox....

cinnamonnut · 24/12/2011 14:09

Just got home from M&S here - turkeys for 6-10 people reduced to £18.

valiumredhead · 24/12/2011 14:33

worra have you got a slow cooker? I do our gammon in ours and it's delicious. Just bung in about 2 TBS water and leave it for about 3-5 hours depending on the size. Before I put it in the SC I pour boiling water over it to get rid of the salt and 'scum.'

valiumredhead · 24/12/2011 14:34

We have a chicken as no one in this house is keen on turkey which was 14 quid and a gammon which is massive and was also 14 quid - from the local butchers.

I've just done my gammon - boiled in water, discard and then simmered inpineapple juice for 1 and 1/2 hours, then cut fat off, stud with cloves and cover in honey and roast half an hour. Looks delicious and the dog is wlking on her hind legs as a trick to beg for some!

Good turkey is expensive, cook it well and it should be yummy, if it's too dry, then it's been cooked wrong!

XmasFayreToMiddlin · 24/12/2011 15:11

I would expect my turkey to be wearing a fecking crown given the price of it. Xmas Grin

NettoHoHoHoSuperstar · 24/12/2011 15:16

We're having fillet steak.
My friend accidentally defrosted them so sold them to me for £5 for three, and there's only two of us. Xmas Grin

NettoHoHoHoSuperstar · 24/12/2011 15:18

Actually we were going to have one of the £20 frozen geese from Lidl, but since my mad oven can't even cook a frozen pizza evenly it was best not to chance it.

squeakytoy · 24/12/2011 15:29

Sainsburys are doing small gammon joints in their 3 for a tenner offer. I just got those, they are not too salty, cook nicely and cool quicker making for nice easy storage and slicing.

marriedandwreathedinholly · 24/12/2011 17:34

Whizzed down to Waitrose for sellotape, paracetamol, etc., at the last minute. Our £33 turkey was reduced to £12.50 Xmas Shock
