DH has just come in and has a turkey from the Co-op for £7.

Mind you we've already got one for tomorrow. He thought it was a bargain and would go in the freezer for another time.

PigletJohn · 24/12/2011 18:34

just got a half-price one at Tesco. The beef rib will stay in the fridge a bit longer.

Their hams and accompaniments not yet down though.

LordOfTheFlies · 24/12/2011 18:44

My parents used to order their chicken (we didn't have turkey after my dad got food poisoning from leftovers many years ago) from the butchers.
It would sit in the cold cupboard , a label with my Dad's name on it wrapped round the chickens palid little legs.

I used to take perverse pleasure in teasing out the stubbly quills with kitchen tweezers.
(ah, sad git) I'm seeing why I became vegetarian now nothing to do with my mothers cooking that could make the most appetising pound of stew look like a boiled floorcloth

Fluffycloudland77 · 24/12/2011 19:05

I got ours from sains half price at 16.45. Norfolk black free range, even th big ones were only £30. We had the same bird for the past two years and it's lovely meat. !

Glittertwins · 24/12/2011 19:09

Ours was the towards the higher figure here. We get a large turkey around 14lb or so so that we have plenty left over for the freezer over time and also for stock. Nothing gets wasted.

Oh my word, we don't celebrate Xmas, but will have a roast. Got a chicken because I don't like turkey particularly. I honestly had NO IDEA how expensive they were. Chicken was £3 from local halal place. Lordy, £50+ for a bit of poultry? Well I learn something new everyday.

Serenitysutton · 24/12/2011 21:27

I'm not on board with crowns. What do they do with the rest of the turkey?
5 years ago I happily paid £80 a go for the happiest most pampered Turk going. Times are much tighter now, but I'd still buy free range wherever possible. We got a 4.5k fr goose for £35, not bad I thought. Should feed 6-8 but there are only 2 of us!

PointyLittleDonkeyEars · 24/12/2011 21:30

Serenity we do get the legs with ours - we freeze them and have them much later in the year, usually in a lovely casserole or curry. Dark meat from a bird like that- it's a treat all over again!

It's such a shame not everywhere does that, all those breasts knocking about with their bodies discarded, it's a crying shame!
We used to have the rest of our turkey at Easter of Easter fell within 3 months ish of Xmas (frozen obv!)

PointyLittleDonkeyEars · 24/12/2011 22:26

ROFL at breasts 'knocking about'.

Sorry.

PregolaLolaOnAlittleDonkey · 24/12/2011 22:49

would like to add godfather does breed these turkeys he didn't go into a shop and buy it, i'm now a bit Xmas Blush at how much he has potentially lost by giving us this one and i'm sat here moaning about the size

Tesco Finest fresh Turkey with Giblets serves 6-10

£40.00

strictlovingmum · 24/12/2011 22:58

Waitrose yesterday at 6pm, loads of turkey's left at:
large £80 and over
medium £65
and crown's anything between £35 and £49 extortion, on the other hand almost nothing left of beef, lamb or pork, all gone, IMO I was better off buying leg of lamb for tomorrow and lovely rolled rib of beef for Boxing day, yummy, can't waitGrin.
No sprouts for us either, but rather festive cabbage, braised with apples, cinnamon sultanas and red wine, I love it and most importantly DC's will also eat, they hate sprouts with passion, so do I.Smile
