Last year I got a simmilar size (feeds 6-10, 4.5kg) turkey from the same shop (marks and sparks). Last year I paid £28ish this year it was £43.56!!!

I got the smallest free range one they had in huge tesco and it was £27, can't remember weight but said feeds 4-6. Flipping rip off, the supermarkets are at it.

SnowFunIntended · 23/12/2011 23:13

Oh, well lucky them!

I hate the way they inflate the price of turkey at Christmas, so for the last few years I have done beef wellington- ok, a fillet of beef is extortionate, but at least it is the same price all year, and tastes fantastic. I have a huge fillet in the fridge, will prep it tomorrow and then just 20 mins in the oven on Christmas day.

frumpet · 23/12/2011 23:39

Why not buy a turkey youngster , a bag of feed and rear the thing yourself , you get the benefit of watching it mutate from something almost sweet to a gigantic mutant alien bird that you have to saw in half just to fit in the oven and that has a bloody death wish anyway Grin

WorraLiberty · 23/12/2011 23:42

frumpet if I did that, I might as well pop the roast potatoes and pigs in blankets into the turkey run...cos the foxes would get it anyway Xmas Sad

Pandemoniaa · 23/12/2011 23:43

£39 for a poncetastic, free-range, bronze bollocked turkey at Waitrose. Feeds 7 allegedly and I'm sure it will be delicious. Didn't seem much more expensive than last year's gobbler, tbh.

Skillbo · 23/12/2011 23:53

Bought two lamb shanks in Waitrose today for a tenner - an hour in the oven and job done! Having said that am 40+4 now so the thought of faffing with a big bird and having to stuff and de-giblet and all that.. ick!

Did manage to whop the bill up though with all the trimmings but that's half the fun!

OhTheConfusion · 24/12/2011 00:13

Snowfun, im not complaining about the price, merely pointing out the drastic rise in the price over a 12 month period for the same item.

We buy free range or organic meat, poultry and eggs but I won't appologise for enjoying eating them!

£15 for my 5kg frozen turkey from Tesco.

Wouldnt dream of getting a fresh one, couldnt justify the cost.

Ive had fresh ones before, dont think theres enough difference to justify the the expense. one we got was green by christmas morning too!

Had a fresh crown from waitrose 3 years ago, was ok but I really missed the dark meat.

I love turkey and ive never served a dry one.

AmberLeaf · 24/12/2011 00:32

I also got a Gammon joint which will be cooked tomorrow. 2kg £10 co-op

FreudianSlipper · 24/12/2011 00:41

we are having roast sirloin beef and was so shocked at the price (£48) my voice went all squeaky.

of course i thanked the butcher while thinking most of that money could go towards my shoe fund more gifts for loved ones

FreudianSlipper · 24/12/2011 00:43

£38 not £48

timidviper · 24/12/2011 00:47

I always had turkey from the butchers and a few years back decided the price was extortionate so switched to frozen, supermarket turkey. Once it is buttered, covered with bacon and stuffed, etc I would defy anyone to tell the difference yet I paid just £12 for a 4.4kg bird.

tigerlillyd02 · 24/12/2011 01:01

I personally can't justify spending such an amount on a bit of meat! Not even at Christmas. Even throughout the rest of the year, it's rare I actually buy any fresh meat as the prices are just extortionate, in my opinion.

For that reason, I'd rather have some chicken or gammon at Christmas. I like these more than I do turkey anyway and I won't be eating my dinner feeling ill at the cost.

blackeyedsanta · 24/12/2011 01:25

so no-one got a frozen turkey for £10 in Morrisons then? Xmas Grin

Kellogg · 24/12/2011 01:31

My Waitrose turkey seems to be more than anyone else's on this thread. Angry

midlandsmumof4 · 24/12/2011 02:24

There's only three of us for Christmas lunch this year as opposed to 8 last-so no turkey here-we have a fresh Capon £16.00 and a decent sized piece of pork for £6.00 from our local market-still far too much though....

Furball · 24/12/2011 06:01

aldiwhore - am literally rofl at your 'raised on a hill' turkey

Ours is about 13lb and was £51 from the butchers to feed 12 plus sarnies in the evening.

I bought ready made pigs in blankets from sainsburys, there's only so much faff I can manage on the day.

The only bad thing about buying from the butcher is it doesn't come with any cooking instructions Grin

catwithflowers · 24/12/2011 06:20

My mum and dad went to Aldi Xmas Grin. Will report back!!

ModreB · 24/12/2011 06:20

My DS is an apprentice butcher, so we got a 5.5kg Capon.

For nothing Xmas Grin

Dolcelatte · 24/12/2011 06:33

I've never been keen on turkey so converted to goose about 7 years ago - and it has to be from Goodman's Geese. the flavour is so delicious and not dry and bland like most turkeys. It also seems more special as goose is not so readily available all year. A 4.5kg goose is about £65 and given that M & S are selling turkeys for about the same price, it doesn't seem to me to be a bad buy, given the quality. The last Xmas turkey came from M & S, together with a beef - both turned out to be fairly disgusting, which was embarrassing as i had family over. However, I have always found the M & S gammon to be very good.

KittyFane · 24/12/2011 06:38

:o @ Pandemonia's poncetastic, free-range, bronze bollocked turkey at Waitrose!!

SanTEEClaus · 24/12/2011 07:31

Meat pack from butcher was 14-16 pound turkey, 1lb bacon, 1lb sausages, 1lb sausage meat, stuffing and 1.5 lb gammon for £50. I thought that was an excellent price and it seems I was right!
