But even without the sexist undertones, it is just a thoroughly mean spirited ad.

winterfox · 09/12/2011 21:08

it's a very wanky ad

thunderboltsandlightning · 09/12/2011 21:12

It is a really nasty ad, sneering at people who aren't rich enough to shop at Harvey Nichols.

JingleBelleDameSansMerci · 09/12/2011 21:13

Made me smile and reminded me of all night dancing/partying. "Walk of shame" just means "not made it home" to me.

And, FWIW, I love the dress at the end...

Alargeglassofred · 09/12/2011 21:19

Have watched it several times now .. Reminds me of my youth !! Get over your selves and live life !!

ThisIsANickname · 09/12/2011 21:19

Love it! Love it! Love it... I loved the fact that they used women of all shapes and sizes. I loved the pained walk of Impractical Shoes on the one in heels that we way too tall for her.

The only thing that bothered me is that none of them looked cold.

FWIW, The difference is with the stride and confidence. The woman at the end had a swagger and a confidence that none of the rest of the women had.

diddl · 09/12/2011 21:22

If they are merely trying to say that the HN´s outfits are better fitting/more stylish-why do the other girls have to be tottering, shoeless, scoffing at the bus stop-why can´t they just be immaculately breezing along to their front door also?

FourEyesGood · 09/12/2011 21:26

Horrible. As others have said, it's sexist, classist and sizeist. And I've only ever heard the phrase 'walk of shame' applied to returning home from a one-night stand.

But it doesn't matter, because I've never set foot in Harvey Nichols (don't know if I've ever even seen one; is there one in Leeds? Lucky old Leeds), and I'm certainly not in their target market.

JingleBelleDameSansMerci · 09/12/2011 21:38

The one in Leeds is lovely, if you're interested... Grin

FreudianSlipper · 09/12/2011 21:43

so not everyone can afford to shop at harvey nics but you can afford to shop there and still look cheap

its a very dull shop unless of course you only like designer clothes

Prolesworth · 09/12/2011 21:44

"I loved the fact that they used women of all shapes and sizes"

Yeah it's great how all the women of all shapes and sizes are shown as slags in ill-fitting, cheap clothes with crippled feet and then there are all these women of all shapes and sizes striding confidently into Kensington mansion blocks looking immaculate ... oh, wait

Feminine · 09/12/2011 21:56

prolesworth yes I agree.

I was just saying earlier, it would have been better if they had used all models or none at all.

ThisIsANickname · 09/12/2011 22:07

"Yeah it's great how all the women of all shapes and sizes are shown as slags in ill-fitting, cheap clothes with crippled feet and then there are all these women of all shapes and sizes striding confidently into Kensington mansion blocks looking immaculate ... oh, wait"

Yeah... they did. Voluptuous women, skinny women and everything in between were featured as women in ill fitting, cheap clothes with crippled feet.

Only one woman is going to be walking confidently home and of course they are going to pick the woman they think makes the dress look most flattering. The POINT was that all the women in the beginning were in horrible, ugly clothes (regardless of their size) and they would have been LESS shamed had they worn something more flattering from HN.

Come on! If they hadn't featured any larger women, there would be a whole host of women on here slagging off the add for just that "What are they saying, that larger women can't have one night stands???"

People will get offended over anything.

SardineQueen · 09/12/2011 22:13

But the difference wan't because of the clothes.

The first women had their clothing damaged or broken, were using public transport, or had a long way to walk.

The last woman was shown stepping up to her front door (of a very expensive place - maybe she had got a cab home) she didn't have a long trek. So she looked chipper.

The head down thing is due to the fact you have a steaming hangover / comedown and are fucking miles away from home. The expensiveness of your dress or shoes doesn't help that. People who can afford a cab / walk home / are still off their tits / don't care look as confident and cheerful as the woman in the last clip. The first ones aren't about shame, they are about a long journey when you feel like you're going to pass out.

SardineQueen · 09/12/2011 22:14

can't afford a cab obv

SardineQueen · 09/12/2011 22:15

Hmmm no maybe I got it right the first time

I'm tired

honest Smile

noblegiraffe · 09/12/2011 22:16

All the women are white. Hardly a celebration of diversity.

lovesadirtylie · 09/12/2011 22:17

it doesnt really work...surely they're all a bit dim for not taking their coats with them, or borrowing/nicking the blokes jacket or something

Moln · 09/12/2011 22:54

Right so if i buy my next party dress from HN and then stay out all night wearing it, someone will come along in the morning do my hair and make up?

That's what I got from the ad.

If it doesn't happen I am going to be very annoyed I tell you.

It's possibly to buy a party dress that fits and it's teeny tiny and mis-fitting from somewhere that is't HN, I've never shopped at HN and have done the walk of shame and it's the clothes and shoes you have one that make it shameful (aka embarrassing) and not really the walking home after staying else where having sex/continuing the party'

Mind you it really would suit HN in their advert to point out that actually you can buy a non-revealing-dress-that-will-make-the-walk-home-less-embarassing in other shops.

Bubbaluv · 09/12/2011 23:13

Well I like it.
Can't see why it's classist. Can't working class girls dress well and posh girls dress like slappers?
Some you lot need to lighten up a little.
Heaven forbid a fashion store might suggest that you should aim to dress stylishly!

Meglet · 09/12/2011 23:19

Horrible ad.

Greythorne · 09/12/2011 23:21

Foul misogynist stuff.
And I agree with classist.

The "walk of shame girls" look drunk or hungover. They look scruffy and uncomfortable in their choice of clothes. They look bedraggled and embarrassed. Their clothes look cheap. They are portrayed as paying the price for wearing uncomforaptable shoes. The lighting is grey, cold, dark.

The girl at the end looks like she is on her way out. After having been to the hairdressers. She is wearing expensive clothes and shoes. She has not been drinking and is not hung over. The sun is shining on the river, a beautiful dawn.

How can this be anything other than a critique of poor, overweight girls who drink too much?

And that's without the sexual subtext.

MissMogwi · 09/12/2011 23:23

It's bobbins. There's no connection between the normal women and the model type at the end. She isn't dishevelled and in a nice area.

Would have been better to have the 'normal looking' women in fabulous dresses from HN still eating kebab, feeling sick, getting the tube or whatever. Though I suppose that's not the target audience for HN!

IReallyHateMyCat · 09/12/2011 23:24

I thought it was funny and turned the idea of the "walk of shame" in to looking good and feelin good not about sex. They all had sex but only one looked happy and a had a bit of a "swing" in her step Grin I also thought all the girls were pretty and not fat. Just had roughed up hair.. as did the last one. The difference is the last one was wearing clothes that fit and flattered her.. not just squeezing in to an uncomfortable barely there dress like most women do on a fri night

sunshinestate · 09/12/2011 23:34

Maybe I'm showing my age but I was waiting for the last woman to be wearing a beautiful coat. Surely if your rich enough to shop at Harvey Nics you can afford a coat?
