Quite simply...it just .didn't. work.

JamieComeHome · 09/12/2011 18:26

I don't like it either. It's not funny, it's mean. But I'm a feminist so I have no sense of humour to speak of

LaurieFairyCake · 09/12/2011 18:29

Yes, the fatties were wearing cheap dresses, walking in cheap areas, and approaching public transport. Their make up and hair was also all dishevelled.

Whereas posho skinny still had immaculate hair and makeup.

Undertone - fat Slags like it rough enough to be all scaggy at the end, poshos stay up all night talking/maybe have sex without disturbing hair.

noblegiraffe · 09/12/2011 18:29

"Have you straightlaced lot never come home from a party at 6 am??"

The streets are practically empty at 6am. I think I got the one night stand impression from the first lady coming out of a flat on her own (so not a load of party-goers at the end of a party) with the ripped tights.

And from other comments on this thread I'm not the only one thinking it's about sex.

LydiaWickham · 09/12/2011 18:29

What I don't get, is who are these woman who go out in December without coats??? Walk of shames normally are wrapping a coat round themselves trying to look like they are wearing something terribly 'office friendly' underneath.

Why isn't the model shivering??? She doesn't look like she's got a beer coat on keeping her warm... Honestly more believable in the summer.

Was I just depressingly sensible re outdoor wear when I was at the walk of shame stage? (god, it's nearly 12 years since I've done that, I appear to have grown up and not noticed Sad )

JamieComeHome · 09/12/2011 18:30

My first thought about the one with ripped tights was that she'd been raped Shock

Feminine · 09/12/2011 18:30

I thought the first women looked so vulnerable :(

JamieComeHome · 09/12/2011 18:31

posho one is going into nice Mansion block in St Johns Wood

LaurieFairyCake · 09/12/2011 18:31

Also the posho was approaching a lovely mansion block, others were coming out of less attractive places.

noblegiraffe · 09/12/2011 18:33

I'm now depressed at the realisation that there are no men doing the 'walk of shame' because there is no expectation on men at parties to have their assets on display or wear anything substantially different to what they might wear at other times of day.

LydiaWickham · 09/12/2011 18:33

oh, and the walk of shame is never really a walk of shame, so long as you throw you head back, stick on a big grin and look like you've got a far more interesting life than everyone else, and all the girls in the cheap dresses would look great if they just smiled like they'd spent the night having fantastic sex. I always feel jealous of people obviously having been out all night looking like they've had the best time (even if they are fatties in cheap, ill-fitting dresses).

MrsPennySworth · 09/12/2011 18:35

And the fatties were using public transport and eating kebabs too. Even the music makes my teeth itch. All posh and fancy, I imagine the posh lady at the end speaking over the top of it saying things like "deary me, don't end up looking like one of these poor fatties in their cheap clothes. Shop at Harvey nicks like moi !" Don't like it. It's horrible.

spiderpig8 · 09/12/2011 18:38

'Even the music makes my teeth itch. All posh and fancy'

'morning has broken' is a childrens hymn!!

Good point noble

LydiaWickham · 09/12/2011 18:39

noblegiraffe - we had this discussion at work this week, all the woman had stress about what to wear, could they do 'day to night' (I did, but just a black work dress with a change of necklace) or would they bring in a party dress. The woman all filled up the loos at 5:30 doing hair, makeup and outfit changes. Straighteners were handed round. Appeals went out for spare tights for those who'd forgotten them/laddered in the day. Shoes were unwalkable, perfume was sprayed, powder, lippy and 'dramatic' eyeshadow was applied. We were all good to go.

The blokes took their ties off.

BourbonSprouts · 09/12/2011 18:40

Oh it's funny! Grin
I remember doing the walk of shame once at the age of 18. Sneaking back into the house with very Angry DM was worse than the embarrassing walk home. Brings back memories.
Harvey Nics are trying to sell classy so use the cheap dresses on ''unflattering'' models for the 'before'.
I do think they should have used some rough, hungover men for balance too, though.

TheFallenMadonna · 09/12/2011 18:42

I don't get it.

Trills · 09/12/2011 18:42

The only advantages the woman at the end has are that her dress isn't riding up and her shoes don't appear to hurt her. She's still walking home in her party dress and high heels.

That's not an ad for Harvey Nichols, it's an ad for common sense.

You could sell coats with an ad like that, or those foldy shoes that go in your handbag, but I don't see it selling any more party dresses.

AngryFeet · 09/12/2011 18:44

I didn't think any of them were fat! Confused

I am not one to get offended by every little thing and I quite like it.

And yes I did the walk of shame as a youth Grin

Suppose it would have been nice to have men in it too but I guess it was for womenswear... The walk of shame does seem to only be about women actually...

Trills · 09/12/2011 18:50

"Walk of shame" definitely not a women-only thing. Saw boys doing it in suit (or even black tie) after events at university - this is boys who you knew would not normally be wearing such a thing on a Sunday morning... In general there is a greater distinction between daytime and nighttime wear for women so it's easier to spot someone who is wearing their clothes from the night before.

VeronicaSpeedwell · 09/12/2011 18:55

It's awful, for all the reasons already given. It's compounded by the way lots of the 'ordinary' women are shot in voyeuristic ways (as opposed to the last woman, who gets a Hollywood star framing).

Jellykat · 09/12/2011 18:55

It made me Grin, and took me back to many a 'walk of shame'... except i usually had a big grin on my face. Wink

MrsPennySworth · 09/12/2011 19:03

I meant the music in the context of the advert spiderpig. I have nothing against morning has broken in itself! I should have explained that better! It made the advert seem extra snooty, iyswim.

DingDongDialsMavislyOnHigh · 09/12/2011 19:09

I didn't think they were fat either... I thought it was funny too. I have been those women (after raving all night rather than shagging, not been single for years. To me it said "we've all been there". Yes and the poor woman getting on the tube at Regents Park, its rough as arseholes round there...Xmas Hmm.

I think Posho at the end is going into the flats on the north side of Hammersmith Bridge- spot the saddo who has just moved to London and happy to recognise somewhere...

My brother (the swine) did the walk of shame shoeless a few years ago. he pulled some woman went back to hers and when he wouldn't spend the next day with her she refused to give him back his trainers.

VeronicaSpeedwell · 09/12/2011 19:09

I get what you mean, MrsPennySworth. The music is not in sympathy with the women on screen. It increases the distance being put between 'us' and 'them'.
