... to know that people who put ketchup on chips are as common as muck.

Salt and (malt) vinegar on chips, there is no other option for decent folk.

Ketchup is only acceptable on fishfinger sandwiches, nothing else.

You can always recognise a person of character by their use of sauce.

HP/Brown sauce: indicates a trustworthy soul with whom you could probably trust your latest betting tip

Salad cream: Not a serious person, very unreliable.

Using Oil/vinegar salad dressing: Pretentious and probably not listening to anything you are saying.

French Mustard: Wimp, and probably hoping it's the same mustard that is squirted, unasked, on their hot dog at the cinema. Far too sweet. Avoid these people.

English Mustard: The No.1 of all condiments. Anyone who uses English mustard demonstrates qualities of individualism, integrity and insight.

May I suggest you use this as a guide rather than a mantra. And any additions would be gratefully received.

Ketchup is the most vile disgusting thing ever!!

I have olive oil and lemon juice on my salad, what does that say?

Chandon · 09/12/2011 11:26

When I was on Holland, a friend gave me chips with ladles of mayo, spicy satay sauce and raw chopped onion all over it.

It was the best thing ever...

until the heartburn kicked in.... Grin

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 09/12/2011 11:28

I like cheese on my chips Grin

Oakmaiden · 09/12/2011 11:33

I think I might have a chip buttie for supper. With ketchup.

And if you don't like it, I'll eat yours too.

Grin
LadyClariceCannockMonty · 09/12/2011 12:55

I think ketchup's quite classless.

curlycreations · 09/12/2011 12:57

TeapotAndBiscuitTin · 09/12/2011 13:01

Mayo
BBQ sauce
Gravy
Curry sauce

CarefullyAirbrushedPotato · 09/12/2011 13:01

CuriousMama · 09/12/2011 14:02

Chips mushroom and gravy from the Chinese take away is divine Xmas Grin

liveinazoo · 09/12/2011 17:08

i like ketchup for dunking and tomato chutney in chip butties.not sure what that says about me!

Tinselperion · 09/12/2011 17:12

OP when you say "ketchup" you mean Heinz don't you. I insist on homemade stuff using organic heirloom tomatoes.

I'm not sure cheese curds and gravy counts as a "sauce" but I like that too and I'm not even Canadian.

difficulttimes · 09/12/2011 17:21

I do apologise Mrs. Boooookeyyy!

supermama212 · 09/12/2011 17:25

cheese and gravy on the chips and in a sandwich < drooling just writing about it> sounds foul but it is delicious!

PigletJohn · 09/12/2011 18:23

white wine ninegar, and white pepper, if it's (battered) fish and chips

Hellmans ketchup (better than Heinz) if it's steak and chips

Mayo otherwise.

Esta3GG · 09/12/2011 18:30

Curry sauce. Mushy peas.
All mushed up in styrofoam.
I am that common.

Dreamer234 · 09/12/2011 18:57

The vinegar from home made pickled onions with chip shop chips. Am I alone? Xmas Blush

Whateveryousaymustberight · 09/12/2011 19:05

Chips, egg, brown sauce. Not HP brand, 'Daddy's Favourite', which my husband calls 'Mummy's '. See, that's what makes us common, not the combination of foods.

Whateveryousaymustberight · 09/12/2011 19:08

Some of my *s went astray. I'll leave you to think about that one.

iloveberries · 09/12/2011 19:08

you guys have waaaaaay too much free time!

Dreamer234 · 09/12/2011 19:39

People are divided into those who think these things are important and those that just... don't. Consider toast. Do you care?

Fishandjam · 09/12/2011 20:02

Where do you stand on Reggae Reagge sauce? Or indeed Henderson's Relish?

RRS on chip-shop chips and in bacon butties. HR (and its non-veggie cousin Lea & Perrins) on fried eggs and mushy peas.

Tomato ketchup on fishfinger sandwich, but only if the other slice also has tartare sauce on it.

Mayo AND tom ketchup on French fries.

HP on an English breakfast.

English mustard with sausages or cheese. (Though what's wrong with grey Poupon? Not exactly mild...)

Sweet chilli sauce with Philadelphia on toast.

My home-made napalm Scotch Bonnet sauce on everything.

I do love my condiments, me.

Fishandjam · 09/12/2011 20:03

Dreamer, no you're not - perfect vinegar/chip combination.

CharlieLimaHotel · 09/12/2011 20:39

I don't really like anything on chips, but if I'm feeling saucy Grin I'll go for fritesaus. We bring it home from Holland especially Blush

Alternatively, the peri peri salt in Nandos is quite nice.

mathanxiety · 10/12/2011 04:22

No ketchup, ever, on anything.

Lemon juice and lemon juice only on fish finger sandwiches. Exceptions made only if there is decent tartar sauce available. And the bread must be toasted.
Salt and vinegar on chips.
Salsa or tobasco on scrambled eggs.
Mayo and yellow mustard (squirted) or Grey Poupon on burgers, along with garlicky relish and bits of blue cheese.
Mayo on onion rings.
Cheese toast with tomato chutney.
Mango chutney plus cream cheese on a bacon sandwich (bread must be toasted). Also with curry chips.
Tayto salt n vinegar crisps on a cheese sandwich (must be untoasted).

fling them all in a baguette math, everything tastes better in a baguette. Fact.
