... to know that people who put ketchup on chips are as common as muck.

Salt and (malt) vinegar on chips, there is no other option for decent folk.

Ketchup is only acceptable on fishfinger sandwiches, nothing else.

You can always recognise a person of character by their use of sauce.

HP/Brown sauce: indicates a trustworthy soul with whom you could probably trust your latest betting tip

Salad cream: Not a serious person, very unreliable.

Using Oil/vinegar salad dressing: Pretentious and probably not listening to anything you are saying.

French Mustard: Wimp, and probably hoping it's the same mustard that is squirted, unasked, on their hot dog at the cinema. Far too sweet. Avoid these people.

English Mustard: The No.1 of all condiments. Anyone who uses English mustard demonstrates qualities of individualism, integrity and insight.

May I suggest you use this as a guide rather than a mantra. And any additions would be gratefully received.

And salad cream with slightly underripe bananas is surprisingly nice, which I discovered at Guide camp one year.

Pomtastic · 08/12/2011 15:21

Sweet chilli sauce on chips: much more naice than ketchup!

ScatterChasse · 08/12/2011 15:22

Mint sauce has to made with vinegar and a teaspoon of sugar, if you're using a jar of it.

A jar of it, just plonked on the table...no thank you very much.

(Oh, I would never put anything on chips, except salt and vinegar. Everything else at the side of the plate to be dipped in.)

MrsChristmasDB · 08/12/2011 15:23

I prefer mint jelly to sauce if I'm honest, but you can't really 'dip' so you have to scoop !

I am more of a 'dip-on-side-of-plate' than 'throw-preferred-sauce-all-over-chips' gal too ! Xmas Grin

SarahBumBarer · 08/12/2011 15:23

curry sauce on chips then vinegar and salt on top. Yum!

And always vinegar followed by the salt.

itsbrandybutterandtinseltime · 08/12/2011 15:23

OP, you evil, madwoman!

Salad cream and ketchup are delicious with chips!

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 08/12/2011 15:24

Curry Sauce on chips is a must......however, they have to be chippie chips, not oven ones!!!! Salad cream is also heavenly on chips! Brown sauce is just wrong.

SarahBumBarer · 08/12/2011 15:25

brown sauce is for egg yokes. A lovely browny eggy sludge to dip bread into..mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

AmberLeaf · 08/12/2011 15:26

Ketchup is only acceptable on fishfinger sandwiches, nothing else

You are common as muck for eating fishfinger sandwiches!

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 08/12/2011 15:26

A nice medium rare steak is for egg yolks......or bread and butter!

complexnumber · 08/12/2011 15:26

"Wasabi"

Oh good grief, I should have guessed that we would enter the world of sauces that really ought to be anagrams of famous Dutch presidents or something.

mayonnaise, curry sauce and ketchup together on chips, with lots of salt and vinegar too. But not ON the chips, NEXT to them - I'm not an animal...

limitedperiodonly · 08/12/2011 15:27

Tartare sauce on a fish finger sandwich. Mmmm. I feel a filet o fish coming on.

SarahBumBarer · 08/12/2011 15:27

Fishfinger sandwiches are super posh. All the posh gastro-pubs round here serve them and I know they are posh because they are always called "posh fishfinger butties".

MrsChristmasDB · 08/12/2011 15:27

I like Salad Cream to dip Ready Salted crisps in.

Specially M & S crisps.

And I am quite partial to a Salad Cream and Smoky Bacon Flavour crisp sandwich.

Mmmmm !

Brilliant, sardine queen Xmas Grin

wahwahwah · 08/12/2011 15:31

Cheese and vinegar!

diddl · 08/12/2011 15:33

Well imo, ketchup is never acceptable with anything as it is revoltingly sweet.

And can I throw in German mustard as an alternative to French?

tooclosetocall · 08/12/2011 15:35

I prefer condiments seasonings..sauces on the side. On the side is big with me.

@ the very idea of fish finger sandwiches

Pickles of any type

effingwotsits · 08/12/2011 15:37

Chip butties with salad cream, fish and chips with salad cream, peas with salad cream, bread, crisps and salad cream.... All favourites of mine. I must be very unreliable Grin

AnotherMincepie · 08/12/2011 15:37

Salt and (malt) vinegar - nice with jam sandwiches
Ketchup - tasty with a cup of coffee
HP/Brown sauce - great for cleaning hardwood furniture
Salad cream - mix with cornflakes for a unique sweet treat
Oil/vinegar salad dressing - so which is it, oil or vinegar?
French Mustard - don't understand a word it says
English Mustard - it's yellow so is a superb topping for bananas
