... to know that people who put ketchup on chips are as common as muck.

Salt and (malt) vinegar on chips, there is no other option for decent folk.

Ketchup is only acceptable on fishfinger sandwiches, nothing else.

You can always recognise a person of character by their use of sauce.

HP/Brown sauce: indicates a trustworthy soul with whom you could probably trust your latest betting tip

Salad cream: Not a serious person, very unreliable.

Using Oil/vinegar salad dressing: Pretentious and probably not listening to anything you are saying.

French Mustard: Wimp, and probably hoping it's the same mustard that is squirted, unasked, on their hot dog at the cinema. Far too sweet. Avoid these people.

English Mustard: The No.1 of all condiments. Anyone who uses English mustard demonstrates qualities of individualism, integrity and insight.

May I suggest you use this as a guide rather than a mantra. And any additions would be gratefully received.

Ooh, I forgot about coleslaw.

Mmmmmmm.

When I have salad that is what there is most of on my plate. I would eat it out of the tub but that's a bit uncouth even for me ! Xmas Grin

Funtimewincies · 08/12/2011 17:49

You say 'common as much' like it's a bad thing Xmas Grin.

Nowt wrong with common.

With ketchup on.

Funtimewincies · 08/12/2011 17:49

muck, even.

AbsofCroissant · 08/12/2011 17:51

The topping for chip also depends on the type.

Vinegar and salt can only be on slap chips and those can only genuinely be made in South Africa (very big, very squishy, very fatty chips. They're not possible in Europe).

Everything else - mayonnaise and occassionally ketchup

complexnumber · 08/12/2011 18:14

disregard at your peril! Slinking away in a bad way with your socks.

It won't be long before you get me started on piccallili.

salt and vinegar on chip shop chips. To be eaten out of doors and ideally dipped into a tub of mushy peas.
mayonnaise on the side with non chip shop chips and fried potatoes, or dabbed on cicken or fishfinger sandwiches
brown sauce with cooked breakfasts
ketchup with cheese omlette or fishcakes
horseradish sauce with roast potatoes
english mustard with hot dogs, ham, beef, pies, sausages, stews...
other mustard only for wimps
olive oil and balsamic for dipping bread into
mango chutney for cooked salmon, but not smoked
apple sauce for roast pork sandwiches
bread sauce for roast chicken or turkey
wasabi and soy sauce for sushi
mint sauce or salad cream are never ever right.

Insomnia11 · 08/12/2011 18:27

I love nearly all condiments for different things. I love English mustard but do like and use other kinds too- why restrict yourself? There are several different types just from France. I dismissed salad cream for too long and now have it back in the fridge.

complexnumber · 08/12/2011 18:29

So, most of you are in agreement that using ketchup on your chips is a good indicator that you are a disgrace to your upbringing.

Just wondering...

Chips with one of the following is acceptable:
*Gravy
*Curry Sauce
*Tartare Sauce
*Ketchup and Mayo mixed together
*Sal and Vinegar

Different condiments for different moods.

Pretty much anything I put gravy on I also put mint sauce on (except chips)

Love Brown Sauce on bacon, eggs and tomatos

Love Tartare with fish (prefer the sauce to the fish tbh)

Dont eat sweet chilli or mustard or picallilli (rather lick my own arsehole) or cranberry sauce or bread sauce

Where do we stand on chutneys????

LikeAnAdventCandleButNotQuite · 08/12/2011 18:43

FWIW I think chips are the only acceptable product to be mixed with ketchup - anything else is a sin. Especially, most importantly, a Sunday Roast (old school friend, knows who she is, did this...ghastly)

Bonsoir · 08/12/2011 18:45

"I put mayo on my chips, what does that make me?"

It makes you Belgian (or a wannabe Wink)

SantaDesperatelySeeksSedatives · 08/12/2011 18:52

Chips need salt, vinegar AND ketchup. And, yes I'm dead common Grin

thegirlwithnoname · 08/12/2011 18:57

chips with mince beef and onion gravy with a slice of bread and butter is my idea of heaven :)

juneybean · 08/12/2011 19:07

Not sure if anyone's mentioned this, but what about mayo AND ketchup for dipping your chips in (basically a marie rose)

ouryve · 08/12/2011 19:17

I often lift my meals to that level of decadence, juneybean.

cambridgetinsellyferret · 08/12/2011 19:32

Garlic Mayo here. Kids have ketchup. DH is a purist and eats his chips with nothing on Xmas Wink

ilovesprouts · 08/12/2011 19:33

mayo on my chips if none, tom sauce mmmmm

Hypnobirthingmum · 08/12/2011 19:35

Mayonnaise on chips
Tartar Sauce in Fish Finger Sandwiches
Brown sauce on Baked Beans
Mint sauce on sausage and mash.

Branston pickle on peanut butter sandwiches.
Lea & Perrins Worcester Sauce on cheese on toast.
Tomato Ketchup should only be used on fried egg sandwiches.

Ciske · 08/12/2011 19:38

Curry Kruidenketchup is the only way to go:

Am I the only one who has houmous with my chips?

Am I the only one who has houmous with my chips?

AstronomyDomine · 08/12/2011 19:43

I like ketchup with my chips and don't give a shit what you think that makes me. Just saying. Xmas Wink

Yourefired · 08/12/2011 19:43

No no no. You've all got it wrong. Now when eating chips in non-Coastal uk areas use hendersons relish, costal areas it's vinegar, continental Europe mayonnaise, and the USA ketchup. Other areas are still to be decided upon.

ilovesprouts · 08/12/2011 19:46

my dd dips carrots in tom sauce ?

TheFrogs · 08/12/2011 19:46

Reading this has just made me realise how many sauces I currently have in my possession:

Ketchup
Ketchup with balsamic
Brown sauce
Fruity sauce
HP pepper sauce
Mayo
Garlic mayo
Salad cream
English mustard
French mustard
Hot dog mustard
Soy sauce
Sweet chilli
Mint sauce
Redcurrant jelly
Cranberry sauce
Worcester sauce
Tartare sauce
Horseradish

is this normal? Hmm
