... to know that people who put ketchup on chips are as common as muck.

Salt and (malt) vinegar on chips, there is no other option for decent folk.

Ketchup is only acceptable on fishfinger sandwiches, nothing else.

You can always recognise a person of character by their use of sauce.

HP/Brown sauce: indicates a trustworthy soul with whom you could probably trust your latest betting tip

Salad cream: Not a serious person, very unreliable.

Using Oil/vinegar salad dressing: Pretentious and probably not listening to anything you are saying.

French Mustard: Wimp, and probably hoping it's the same mustard that is squirted, unasked, on their hot dog at the cinema. Far too sweet. Avoid these people.

English Mustard: The No.1 of all condiments. Anyone who uses English mustard demonstrates qualities of individualism, integrity and insight.

May I suggest you use this as a guide rather than a mantra. And any additions would be gratefully received.

Eating chippy chips is as common as muck.

I love chops and chippy chips and gravy..... Mmmmmm

ilovesprouts · 08/12/2011 19:49

also did anyone buy the green tom sauce i once bought some to go we my chips but it looked gross

AstronomyDomine · 08/12/2011 19:51

I bought that because my son, about 8 at the time, wanted to try it. It tasted just like ketchup (obviously) but it looked so wrong and wasn't right so I chucked it out.

lolajane2009 · 08/12/2011 19:51

chips, cheese and gravy anyone?

CheerfulYank · 08/12/2011 19:54

YABU. There's nothing better than piping hot salty french fries dipped in ketchup.

On second thought I am common...

:o

TheFrogs · 08/12/2011 19:59

lola, they used to serve that at my school, it was a fave Grin

delphinedownunder · 08/12/2011 20:52

salt and vinegar on thick chips
mayo on thin chips
Curry sauce on drunken chips
mint sauce on mushy peas

KoPo · 08/12/2011 21:14

Chips are wonderful with salt and vinegar ..... and brown sauce to dip into.

Ketchup is just way too sweet and icky.

OP - You would like my DH, he is another brown sauce fan and used english mustard in massive quantities. ( he has it so thick in a ham sandwich that it will ooze out when he takes a bite)

sozzledchops · 08/12/2011 21:17

I put ketchup on everything, have had to restrain myself at posh dos from asking for the ketchup.

icooksocks · 08/12/2011 21:18

Tartare Sauce is the only condiment suitable for chips.

stickyLFDTfingers · 08/12/2011 21:20

I learnt about "war" on chips on my Erasmus year in Holland.

You put ketchup, mayonnaise and peanut sauce on, all together.

Seems like a good idea once you've drink large quantities of beer!

serin · 08/12/2011 21:30

Benedicta, chip sauce from France, wehave just finished the last squirty bottle Sad

There is a certain tough town in the North West where chips are served with Pey (to rhym with whey) wet, it is basically the sloppy juive from the mushy pea pan Grin

I never picked up the courage to try it!

Scuttlebutter · 08/12/2011 22:02

Nobody has yet mentioned the divine nectar of "cheesy chips". You make your chips at home in the fryer, then you place a large quantity after draining on to an oven tray, coat liberally with a thick snowfall of grated cheese, then grill under an insanely hot grill till molten, bubbly and inviting. Shovel on to plate and apply to face with a large dollop of ketchup on the side.

Fish finger sandwiches - ketchup is lovely.

Ordinary chips - either ketchup or mayo - but vinegar and salad cream are the ejaculation of the underworld.

A delightful Welsh variant on curry sauce is "half and half" when a curry is served with half rice/half chips - fab. Ketchup on this would be wrong. It should be enjoyed in its luscious purity.

HandMadeTail · 08/12/2011 22:18

Fat? Wink

sozzledchops · 08/12/2011 22:33

Used to love going to the Chinese takeaway after a drink or two for some chips n grave or chips n curry sauce, yum!

MeltedAdventCalendarChocolates · 08/12/2011 22:43

I am a HP fan. i would not advice that you give me your betting slip, nor anyone else I know that likes the stuff...

acsec · 08/12/2011 23:51

Cheesy chips or chips with burger sauce from the kebab shop! Failing that mayo mixed with tomato sauce - yum!! But never squirted all over my chips, just a little puddle to dip in on the side.

lurkerspeaks · 09/12/2011 00:07

Mayo and sweet chill sauce separately but mixed together when dipping.

Works slightly better with wedges than chips but who cares.

Get0rf · 09/12/2011 00:13

Hmmmm chips and gravy and vinegar. Yum.

I usually have salad cream with mine, but on the side.

Can't be doing with ketchup.

MadameBoo · 09/12/2011 00:21

HA! I like to dip my chips in HUMOUS!

CurlyBoy · 09/12/2011 09:31

Common, or American! We all put ketchup on our chips and I still do over here because I absolutely hate vinegar.

chocablock · 09/12/2011 09:43

I love brown sauce. But ketchup isn't common!!!!

MrsSleepy · 09/12/2011 10:16

I have ketchup with must things Blush

I truly am common

MrsSleepy · 09/12/2011 10:16

Most not must

SexyDomesticatedDab · 09/12/2011 10:22

Nigella says having ketchup is ok so that's fine by me.

Condiment fans here - have lots plus a few homemade chilli type sauces too. Spice it up I say!
