To think that people who wear Hunter wellies are big knobbers...

...if it's in an urban area and it's not raining?

Why not just stick eight tenners to your forehead or a note saying 'I can afford £80 for a pair of wellies' and be done with it?

I don't think wearing wellies to walk anywhere in any weather is as crazy as wearing high heels in all weathers. It was icy here today, and there were lots of people doing the penguin shuffle on the sloped car park at school so that they didn't fall over in their high heels.

At least wellies don't give you bunions.

RhondaRoo · 07/11/2011 16:47

Now I want some Hunter wellies.....my Uncle used to be a Sales Rep for them, the entire family wore them at one point, he got me some but my chunky calves got in the way (grrr).

OP - I live in a very urban area, a mum at school always wears Hunters to do the school pick up and I was silently cursing her for mis-use of wellies.....then DD tells me this mum has a horse and takes her DS straight to the stables after school. Doh! Blush

Thomcat · 07/11/2011 16:48

I couldn't give a rats arse what anyone thinks. I have Hunters. They were a gift from my mother one Xmas actually but whatever, I probably would have bought them myself anyway. If you lived near me you might have spotted me in Sainsburys wearing them, no rain in sight, I might have been to the stables with my kids, it might have rained the night before and I'd walked in the woods and nipped in to pick up some milk. Doesn't really matter. What I wear on my feet, how much I pay and where I wear them is my business and no-one elses. Yeah I can afford £80 wellies, don't like that, that's your problem. Oh and I own 3 different types of Ugg toos. And my 3 kids all have hunters and Uggs. So sue me!

Proudnscary · 07/11/2011 16:49

Oh, yes I can see there is room for interpretation and context Rhonda.

I will investigate more fully before I chastise urban welly misusers.

Thingumy · 07/11/2011 16:50

Yeah, sue us!

Uggs on the other hand..........

working9while5 · 07/11/2011 16:53

All of dh's family are farmers. I think their wellies are Dunlops. Where do they come in the welly hierarchy? [uninitiated emoticon]

OhDoAdmit · 07/11/2011 16:59

I am chuckling to myself (and now to you) on yet another thread where people are getting annoyed even though it is clearly not about them.

Ahhhh Mumsnet....

Proudnscary · 07/11/2011 17:26

Working - hmmm I think farmers are a welly law unto themselves and should not be messed with. If Dunlops they be wearing, then Dunlops be fine with me.

MadameOvary · 07/11/2011 17:32

My first wellies were Dunlops. I wore them to school in the winter. The Dunlop embossing on the sole left a little shoe-shaped print in the snow. (fond memory emoticon)

LuckyRocketshipUnderpants · 07/11/2011 17:43

I love my Hunter wellies. Bought during big freeze last year & my 20 year old pair of J Crew wellies split down side during walk to work. They are red and cheer me up when I put them on. I don't care what peoplw think, they make me happy & I wear them whenever I feel like it.

richpersoninapoorpersonsbody · 07/11/2011 17:51

It's all about the Dubarrys now (if you have a spare £300) that's what posh country folk wear (or so I'm told)

catgirl1976 · 07/11/2011 17:52

No - I cant wear my Dubarrys any more as they have gone naff :(

Avocets · 07/11/2011 17:53

I have asked for some light blue ones for Christmas. I think they look nice.

RhondaRoo · 07/11/2011 17:56

All of dh's family are farmers. I think their wellies are Dunlops. Where do they come in the welly hierarchy? [uninitiated emoticon]

In all fairness, I got my only pair of wellies at the TJ Hughes closing down sale. They are blue with pink flowers (a la Cath Kidston) and they cost £3.75 - bargain! I think the hierarchy would be:

At the bottom of the stinky-welly pile is TJ's bargain-basement-Cath-Kidston-rip-off-stunners and somewhere near the top is the Hunter wellie, Dunlops must surely be in the middle.

Oh and I'm working class and shop at Aldi but have never been to Primark! (Matalan;s the best - home of cheap n cheerful but trendy-for-me clothes!)

Am laughing that people have taken offence to this - surely a very light hearted rant? Or did I miss something?

Don't get me started on Ugg(ly) boots.....but that's more personal taste than pointless-footwear ranting.

:)

Not where I live, they ain't.

brighthair · 07/11/2011 18:29

I have vintage made in Scotland navy ones, but I have horses. They're not warm though or properly non slip so I only wear them for sloshing about in mud. Otherwise it's ariat grasmere all the way - properly cosy!

oldraver · 07/11/2011 18:32

I've just bought some short ones and they are so soft and comfortable I think they were well worth the money.

Why is it any different form buying a cheapie pair of shoes/boots or splashing out on a dearer pair ?

MrsUnassumingTroll · 07/11/2011 18:35

During the snow last year, DH took the train to work.

He was the only person in his carriage NOT wearing Hunters.

Guess what he wanted for Christmas after that? Grin

warmandwooly · 07/11/2011 18:51

4 pages on wellies eh? I really don't give a flying fig about how much people spend on wellies! I myself have had a cheapo pair from Asda that were used for about three years. Becuase they are flat and without a heel the tread has worn off so are really slippy. I wanted a pair of Mel rubber boots but bought some Town and Country ankle ones from TK Maxx!

ledkr · 07/11/2011 18:53

I agree. They all wear em around here whilst walking their black dogs.Anyone who spends that much on footwear to walk around in bad weather is in my opinion a knobber indeed.Grin
I need some wellies for the school walk and i am loathe to spend more than a fiver on them,if i had aspare 80 barr i would buy some lovely irregular choice shoes.

RhondaRoo · 07/11/2011 18:54

warmandwooly Commonsense prevails Grin

(applause is for the not giving a flying fig - not your cheapo Asda pair Wink)

ps - I know I have been guilty of Hunter-envy in the past, but I now know the error of my ways.

Smile

I do have a black dog, too Blush

Towndon · 07/11/2011 19:41

YANBU. Especially if they're driving a 4x4 too!

Lookattheears · 07/11/2011 19:42

ledkr but I already have 4 pairs of Irregular Choice shoes and they are no good at all in mud!
