To think that people who wear Hunter wellies are big knobbers...

...if it's in an urban area and it's not raining?

Why not just stick eight tenners to your forehead or a note saying 'I can afford £80 for a pair of wellies' and be done with it?

I have Hunters but I also have horses so I think I am allowed them?

adamschic · 07/11/2011 15:43

Went into Joules yesterday and their wellies are hunter take offs. It was all tweed this and that, bit 'Made in Chelsea'. Reminded me when hacking jackets were all the rage in the 70's.

fuckityfuckfuckfuck · 07/11/2011 15:43

Meh. I got mine practically new for £3.50 in a charity shop last year when it snowed. Couldn't give a shite what people think, I only wear them if it rains or snows because I don't drive and don't want to ruin my decent footwear. They are comfy and warm and aren't so wide that they fall off with each step.

TandB · 07/11/2011 15:44

I need wellies for me and DS. We now live in the country and there is much mud. Although I do spend part of the week in London for work.

What brand is acceptable?

Kung Fu - Woolies, the home of the cheap welly, is surely the only acceptable brand?

Though Woolies is no more. Except online. And do they sell wellies?! I don't know.

I did have some nice flowery wellies but I wore them to clean out an overgrown pond when we first moved in to our house - of course I fell in and filled them up with water.

I then left them outside and forgot about them and now they are no longer flowered and have a woodlice infestation.

They were nice wellies.

Shutupanddrive · 07/11/2011 15:52

Yabu
I didn't pay anything near £80 for mine! (about half that)
I live in the country with horses
I love mine (navy if your interested)

Proudnscary · 07/11/2011 15:56

Shutupanddrive - goodness me, pay attention, you are allowed to wear them (I decree like some weird Welly Queen). Only urbanites in dry weather are knobbers. Navy is a sophisticated and surprising choice, I'm impressed.

ladyWellyan Grin

It was Billy Connelly

Even if they do cost £80, that's cheaper than some ridiculous shoes that fashionistas wear when it is raining. Most 'fashion shoes' would not last as long as Hunters mile for mile.

Btw, the upper classes do wear Hunters, but they are usually inherited...Grin

I once saw the Queen at a gun dog trial wearing Huntresses, we didn't recognise her, she had on an old headscarf and a Barbour, but it was in the country and it was raining, so you'd let her off, presumably.

toboldlygo · 07/11/2011 16:04

Real outdoorsy horsey people don't wear Hunters any more, since they started manufacturing them abroad they are shit. Bloody things split, leak and are cold. Vintage Hunters that are actually waterproof are acceptable (they have 'Made in Scotland' on the label).

Dubarrys very chav passé now also.

Aigle or Le Chameau are where it's at for warm feet.

scaryteacher · 07/11/2011 16:06

I've had mine since 1986 when I lived on Dartmoor and I also have a Barbour!

The hunters were very useful in urban Belgium last winter for feeding the birds as the snow stopped just short of my boot tops, and also when I shovelled snow off the drive.

lostinindia · 07/11/2011 16:20

I love my hunters, they stop me slipping on my arse in the mud. Decent heel for getting a good grip on a garden fork.

I wear mine to the shops when it's cold or raining as they're dead easy to slip on. Anyway they have authentic mud splattered on them so figure I get away with it.

Lookattheears · 07/11/2011 16:27

I have Hunters, Toggi's and Muck Boots.

And horses and a Landrover and Joules clothing. And I live in't country.

But I'm still a knobber Grin

Thingumy · 07/11/2011 16:30

Ooh my Hunters have the 'Made in Scotland' label. I inherited mine 11 years ago

Am I in the Knobber Brigade?

Proudnscary · 07/11/2011 16:31

ONLY IF YOU WEAR THEM IN URBAN AREAS IN DRY WEATHER

^That answer to all who ask if they are Hunter Knobbers

OTHERWISE - NO. YOU ARE QUITE COOL AND PROBABLY VERY DRY FOOTED AND COSY.

Thingumy

Inherited Scottish vintage Hunters

Are you Royalty?

NinkyNonker · 07/11/2011 16:34

£80?????!!!!! With shorts???!!!! This thread is a series of revelations. Mine were about £30, but that was an age ago. And the colours! I just went online for a look, there's a whole rainbow of colours and finishes now, mine are just navy. V comfy though, and they stay on in mud and water.

Thingumy · 07/11/2011 16:36

Of course Original Poster

MadameOvary · 07/11/2011 16:36

YY to wearing them when it isnt raining. I have just bought a pair as I am vain and will do anything to make my short legs look better in wet weather.

I think OP should reserve her bile for the Jimmy Choo Hunter wearers. Now that is knobbery. Grin

OhDoAdmit · 07/11/2011 16:39

I do NOT understand this wearing of wellies as if they were everyday shoe/boots thing.

The young people are doing it and it puzzles me. They are pretty colours but why would you wear them with a pencil skirt on the tube Confused

I have a pair of short yellow Hunters that I got BRAND NEW from the Heart shop for £5.00. Bargainomous.

But I wear them when I venture somewhere muddy (which isnt often).

They are RUBBISH in the snow. Your toes may stay dry but they will fall off with the cold.

HauntyMython · 07/11/2011 16:40

I'm not too fussed what adults wear TBH, but I did a little when I saw a FB status update raving about how cute her dc was in a new Barbour coat and Hunter wellies.

Her dc is 2 Hmm why does a 2yo need designer clothes of any type?

Proudnscary · 07/11/2011 16:42

Exactly OhDoAdmit - they are not shoes, they are wellington boots.
