To think that people who wear Hunter wellies are big knobbers...

...if it's in an urban area and it's not raining?

Why not just stick eight tenners to your forehead or a note saying 'I can afford £80 for a pair of wellies' and be done with it?

I walk my dog in mine every day, we live in a small town with countryside around, so I walk in the muddy country bits then come back through town Shock wearing my Hunters, even on a fine day. There are loads of farmers and other folks wearing wellies, hill climber types and folk with performance sportswear, too.

I am obviously a knob...

startail · 07/11/2011 14:29

I'm still wearing a pair of green I've had for 20 years (they are actual junior size 4s). No pose value what so ever, but they are narrow and so they don't flop about and rub my heels.
I bought some silly flowery ones, they don't fit anything like as well. DD2 has just taken them over from DD1Grin

CroissantNeuf · 07/11/2011 14:29

I agree that they are a silly price when surely any semi-decent pair of wellies and chunky socks would probably do as good a job.

However I think Uggs are an even bigger waste of £££s.

MrsTwinks · 07/11/2011 14:32

I sell them. Kids ones are no where near £80 btw. Where I work they are maybe £20 more than cheapy dunlops, only a few quid more than the nice non hunter ones. We get alot of parents buying a colour that can pass down iykwim.

I do agree thou about people wearing them as a style thing, its a bit Hmm I've seen people who wear them as their wet weather/snow boot and it can look good, but I've also heard tale of a woman who brought them for her DD as her nursery wellies then complained they came home muddy. I mean WTF????

OriginalPoster · 07/11/2011 14:34

Hunters fit me properly, in most other wellies my socks come off.

I love my wellies...

If it wisnae fer yer wellies
Far would ye be
You'd be in the hospital
Or in the 'firmary
If you go doon wi a dose o the flu
Or even pleurisy
Then you didnae hae your feet in your wellies

Wellies they are great and wellies they are swell
They keep in the water and they keep in the smell..

Etc

RightUpMyRue · 07/11/2011 14:34

Goodness, a big knob and posh wellies!

OriginalPoster · 07/11/2011 14:35

Hunter welly socks, though ££££ are a rip off

MistyMountainHop · 07/11/2011 14:36

yeah kids ones are only about £20

ConstanceNoring · 07/11/2011 14:37

You are a bit of a knobber for caring.

HowardDonaldLovesMeBest · 07/11/2011 14:49

They're not as good as they used to be , when mine split after years of daily use, I went to try on replacements and they were ALL WRONG.

Francagoestohollywood · 07/11/2011 14:51

Here I am this morning on my way to the supermarket in central Milan (raining)

realhousewife · 07/11/2011 14:56

I love this post-modern class distinction. The middle classes go to Primark and Aldi, the working classes wear Hunters and Burberry.

porcamiseria · 07/11/2011 15:10

ha ha ha, I really want a pair tho!!! I nheed wellies for the park and they are the most elegant

so will get some wank pink ones instead then!

NinkyNonker · 07/11/2011 15:13

I love mine. But only on long dog walks on the beach or in the rain.

MrsTwinks · 07/11/2011 15:16

realhousewife I don't shop at aldi or primark (got tired of constantly fixing seams) & I can't afford burberry and hunter. WTF does that make me??

MenopausalHaze · 07/11/2011 15:16

realhousewife has it bang on the head! So true!

Whatmeworry · 07/11/2011 15:18

Moet and Coke anyone? Cheersh :o

ViviPru · 07/11/2011 15:18

Hunters? People are still wearing them? Its all about Tretorn, darlings.

LadyWellian · 07/11/2011 15:21

OriginalPoster my grandpa used to sing that to us. Who is it by?

NinkyNonker · 07/11/2011 15:21

How did wellies suddenly become class indicators?! Mine are down at heel and prob bot the sort you're all thinking about after 10 yrs of solid wear, my old £5 market ones were super uncomfy but I can (and do, regularly) walk all day in these.

Best tell me what else I should be doing to suitably hide my horrific middle-classness...

sue52 · 07/11/2011 15:24

I've got some but I live in the country and I'm frequently up to my ankles in mud at this time of year. I probably have a few knobbish tendencies though.

EverythingInMjiniature - including your feet!

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 07/11/2011 15:31

I have a pair, didn't pay £80 for them, don't wear them to festivals with shorts, don't have a horse so won't wear muck boots (although wore similar aeons ago when we did) and am not a knobber.

They were bloody marvellous in the snow last year, and I have them in the back of the car now for the next time I have to walk through knee deep snow.

YABU. And I don't care if you don't like them. So stick it up your bum.

Want2bSupermum · 07/11/2011 15:37

Don't believe in expensive wellies. My wellies were 10 quid from the market about 15 years ago and fit me very well. Better to wear thick hiking socks and have wellies with no lining so you can wash both the socks and wellies on a regular basis.

I have noticed that there is a little bit of reverse snobery in the UK. When we were visiting in September I went to the local hospital car boot sale to pick up clothes for my DD. The sellers were clearly from a lower socio economic group than the buyers! Was great to get very nice baby clothes for DD. I paid GBP1 for a bag of 9-12 month clothes and was shocked to see they all came from next. DH and I were laughing as we were buying everything up. For once something is cheaper in the UK than the US!
