Nasty voice, whiny, weak and high pitched.

mediocre pop shite at best.

and just whiny and bizarre when he decided he was he messiah.

Bollocks and crap.

There aren't many (I would suggest The Beach Boys God Only Knows is one of a handful that surpasses it), but Sinaed sings it better than he does (hides from wrath of rycooler).

rycooler · 05/11/2011 20:24

S'ok - I love Sinead - and yes, she sings it beautifully.

Theala · 05/11/2011 20:26

A fun thing to do is to compare the Sinead and Prince versions of this song. That'll learn 'em.

NicholasTeakozy · 05/11/2011 20:29

Bonsoir mes Petits Filou. Two really good albums, the rest shite mediocre at best. Prince on the other hand...

NicholasTeakozy · 05/11/2011 20:31

Panzee, there really was no need to link to that excrescence*.

*Is that a real word? I feel it should be. Smile

Theala · 05/11/2011 20:34

Actually, this is just shit:

Theala · 05/11/2011 20:38

And yes, it is, Teako (if I may make so bold).

EightiesChick · 05/11/2011 20:42

YABU. Brilliance until the post-Black or White era. Completely bonkers of course. But a large part - not all - of the musical output is just superb.

FabbyChic · 05/11/2011 20:43

His stuff was catchy and great to dance too, whilst i didn't like his later stuff his early stuff like off the wall was good.

MarianneM · 05/11/2011 20:45

"Beethoven was a musical genius. Carlos Acosta is an outstanding dancer. Pavarotti was a good singer, Jimmi Hendrix could perform.

In comparison Jackson was weak and mediocre and whiny."

I was going to ask you: who are you comparing him to? But you've answered it. OBVIOUSLY pop music is never going to compete with classical or jazz, but as far as pop goes, I think YABU, MJ's music is definitely good pop.

But I also have an issue with people taking pop SO seriously! The day I lost faith with the Sunday Times was when they likened Elton John to Mozart. And even the Guardian wetting itself with excitement about Tinie Tempah or whoever it is at the moment...

It really puzzles me actually. I read about these talented, quirky, different popular musicians and when you finally hear their music it all sounds the same! Whether it's Florence and The Machine, Bat for Lashes or Lady Gaga. Now if you really want to hear something interesting AND contemporary, try James McMillan or Judith Weir...

AtYourCervix · 05/11/2011 21:13

I was comparing him to those who are actually good at what they do, after hearing im described as 'brilliant ' 'a genius' and 'outstanding' whinch he just is't.

electricalbanana · 05/11/2011 21:23

never liked him....didnt see what the fuss was about

and dont get me started on lady bloody gaga and madonna!!!!!

MarianneM · 05/11/2011 21:30

Well then YABU because I think MJ was very good at writing pop songs. Pop singers don't need to sing like Pavarotti to be good at what they do. In fact I have much more of an issue with people like Susan Boyle or these awful crossover "artists" like Katherine Jenkins singing the most dire crap than Michael Jackson who wrote great pop songs - and was very influential. Genius, maybe not, but brilliant (in his field), yes.

LadyBeagleEyes · 05/11/2011 21:52

Lynette, that was a lovely link.
People seem to forget what a beautiful talented child he was before he went down the route of plastic surgery, and all the stories about him came out.
I do think he was a pop genius with a very troubled life.

IveGotTightsOlderThanYouLove · 05/11/2011 21:57

YABU! He was the BEST! A great songwriter, singer, dancer - the energy!

For those MJ and Paul McCartney doubters I love this song, by the way! :)

MyChildDoesntNeedSleep · 05/11/2011 21:58

Thanks Lynette, that link made me go all gooey inside Smile

MangoMonster · 05/11/2011 21:58

YABU.

MyChildDoesntNeedSleep · 05/11/2011 21:58
Sad
WinterIsComing · 05/11/2011 22:05

Is a video showing MJ buying children from orphanages with Paul and Lynda supposed to put the doubters' minds at rest?

only watched the first bit.

Theala · 05/11/2011 22:08

""crying wouh wouh wouh".

that's actually really sad.

WinterIsComing · 05/11/2011 22:09

Oh, they aren't buying them. My screen is a bit dim as am I

forehead · 05/11/2011 22:10

I remember when i was a kid attending parties. The only time you could get the kids to dance, is if you played a Michael Jackson track.
He is also one of the most impersonated entertainers. Many of the young stars including Justin Timberlake have said that they have been influenced by MJ
He transcends colour , creed and religion. whether you like his music or not, he WAS a genius.

Bearskinwoolies · 05/11/2011 23:12

He wasn't a genius - his marketing and music people were. They're the ones that kept his career going from Thriller onwards, and kept the money pouring in.

MyChildDoesntNeedSleep · 05/11/2011 23:51

What forehead said.

fatlazymummy · 06/11/2011 01:14

I liked some of his early stuff - Jackson 5 , Don't stop, Billie Jean. Most of his later stuff was self indulgent tosspottery, IMO. And yes, he was a weird little creep. Personally I never bought into all that 'Peter Pan, never grew up, prefers children as friends' stuff.
I also agree with whoever dissed Madonna. The most over rated performer ever.
