Nasty voice, whiny, weak and high pitched.

mediocre pop shite at best.

and just whiny and bizarre when he decided he was he messiah.

Bollocks and crap.

Well, I'll take that back after just reading Theala's post Grin.
I'm very, very grown up by the way.

Theala · 05/11/2011 19:25

LadyBeagleEyes :o At least I have the good sense to realise that my LadyGaga fetish is totally aberrant and to keep it to myself.

Although I bet in twenty years' time, people will be going on about what a musical genius she was. Hmm :o

chilipeppers · 05/11/2011 19:25

Thriller only sold 100,000,000 albums. Genius! A very sad and misunderstood man.

cantspel · 05/11/2011 19:26

Cant stand MJ and the whole king of pop thing. Thriller is crap and the earth song makes me want to heave.

His little girl squeeky voice and all that crouch grabbing leaves me cold.

slavetofilofax · 05/11/2011 19:27

Couldn't agree with you more OP.

All his music sounded the same, all his dancing looked the same. The videos were good, but I suspect that had a lot to do with other people.

I'm not entirely sure how anyone can enjoy music made be someone that is quite so.. um.. weird.

WinterIsComing · 05/11/2011 19:27

I liked some of it and pop is what it is - doesn't claim to be anything too intellectual. I'm not even sure how much of it he wrote but it was always bang-on "of the age", especially production-wise, which is what popular music is supposed to be.

He did get a bit bit shit towards the end though I must admit, but he was a man of fifty so fair play.

He can't be faulted as a dancer though. There are some people who stand out at every level, whether they are four, fourteen, amateur or professional. You just cannot take your eyes off them. Michael Jackson could have been in the back row of a chorus of a hundred superb dancers doing the exact same steps and you would know it was him from his unique style.

LadyBeagleEyes · 05/11/2011 19:28

I also think Lady GaGa is fab.
I have her on my ipod.

shineynewthings · 05/11/2011 19:30

Michael Jackson was an unparalleled genius. And always will be. And I really mean that.

Theala · 05/11/2011 19:31

:High-fives LadyBeagleEyes: :o

He wasn't my cup of tea in the 80s but a few of his songs are great. Quite liked the Jackson 5 too. I never understood the obsession some people had but maybe I was a teeny bit too old.

A very sad life though.

Soups · 05/11/2011 19:43

yanbu

Panzee · 05/11/2011 19:44

I've just realised I really like the dance remix of Scream that was around in 1995 or so. And while looking for it I found this.

So just for zukiecat this would be in your Room 101:

:o
Panzee · 05/11/2011 19:45

Oops, forgot what forum I was on.

NotJustKangaskhan · 05/11/2011 19:50

Musically, it's a matter of personal taste. Some of his songs I like, others I don't. I mostly prefer his earlier stuff.

Within the music business and popular culture, he and his siblings (alongside a handful of others artists) were revolutionary. When his older brothers started, even when he started later, Jim Crow laws were still in effect. Sad as it is to consider, they made being black in many areas acceptable for the first time. As the most famous of them, he was a major bridge builder in giving many people a popular culture icon that represented them for the first time that was equally accepted by the majority at that time period. His work alongside Diana Ross in The Wiz was amazing and ground breaking for the time period.

His music and his derailing in later years up to personal points of view, his accomplishments shouldn't be diminished by them (they most likely will be, for many reasons, but they shouldn't be).

Yes NotJustKanga I totally agree with your post.

MissHonkover · 05/11/2011 19:56

It's only when I hear covers of his songs that I can actually work out what the words are. Otherwise he sounds like Bubbles gargling with a spanner.

Great dancer though.

LynetteScavo · 05/11/2011 19:59

I would have had more respect for MJ if he hadn't had all the cosmetic work.

Does anyone remember his brother Jermaine on celebrity BB? - The bit where he had to go into the diary room and make BB laugh? Now that was genius.

TiarasTimeOutsAndTantrums · 05/11/2011 20:00

Genius!! And I think a lot of people took advantage of him and he had a shitty childhood.
The DCs are being raised on mj, prince, queen, the Beatles and nirvana. Fuck twinkle twinkle little star Grin

Pedallleur · 05/11/2011 20:04

You have to get past the media stuff, the wierd surgery, child 'interest' etc. That's not his music. The short trousers go back to the vaudeville days. His moves were an exaggeration of all that. His 'look' suited the time (Billie Jean/Thriller etc). He was trapped in a wierd life and his friends were the likes of Liz Taylor, Andy Williams, Berry Gordy, Diana Ross. Some of his music was shite and a lot was a soundtrack of the 80's. McCartney? Beatles - discussion over

grumplestilskin · 05/11/2011 20:07

YANBU, seemed to me to do the same one (shite) dance to everything, and that bit when he goes up and faces a backing dancer to dance with them is so embarrassing uncle trying to be down with the kids! Cover versions are invariably better than originals!

I never got it, he was ALWAYS obviously disturbed yet people were still all "dance monkey dance"..... it always felt to me a bit wrong, fame was obviously not what he needed

Georgimama · 05/11/2011 20:15

Mmmmm, Prince. Tiny but perfect. Purple Rain is in my top five songs of all time.

rycooler · 05/11/2011 20:19

Prince is awesome. Is there a better love song than 'nothing compares 2U'
