Martyr Mothers

They like to tell their children how much they've sacrificed for the children, how much they are giving up by putting their children first. I've heard the term before and seen some. I've just googled this and it got me wondering:

"You?ve just tidied your 10-year-olds bedroom, whipped up two batches of cookies for the school fete, bathed the dog, wrestled with sticky paper to cover your teenagers? school books, and realised you didn?t even stop for lunch today.

Does this sound just a little bit like you?

The martyrdom trap

All parents make some sacrifices for their children; it?s a normal part of parenthood. What?s not ok is when selfless sacrifices are taken to extremes, says Professor Matt Sanders, Clinical Psychologist, Founder of the Triple P Positive Parenting Program, and Director of the Parenting and Family Support Centre at University of Queensland.

?This is when parents fall into the martyrdom trap,? he says. ?Some parents suppress their own needs to such a degree that they become angry, miserable, and depressed,? he says.

Self sacrifice also has an evil twin that contributes to martyrdom ? over protectiveness, and when the two join forces martyrdom mayhem results.

Martyr mums want to protect their child, and do things for them, but what they?re inadvertently teaching their child is that they can?t do it for themselves.

What do you think, can you make too many sacrifices?

DO children have to fit in with out lives or do our lives change because we have children.

Where is the line?

For gods sake we tell kids 'if you can't say something nice don't say nothing at all

Anything at all.

No double negatives here please.

toptramp · 14/09/2011 21:19

I agree with the op. Benign neglect is the way foward imo. We have to make lots of sacrifices anyway as parents; we should treat ourselves and be selfish once in a while. It's good for us! I want to see ''I don't know how she does it'' with sjp. Should be insightfulish.

Kayano · 14/09/2011 21:20

But IMO it's
Stuff like this, always targeting one poster, a regular poster at that who at
Least raises topic for debate, it's like you all gang up on Mitmoo

It's 'eye rolls' and 'sigh- it's OP' 'yawn' when all directed at one person IMO is BULLYING

Not gentle
Ribbing.

If someone posted all the shit you do on your child's Facebook for example you would all have something to say

If your DH said you always talk arse gravy or just took the Piss whenever you said anything you would have something
To say

So I say you should either join in with the debate or quite frankly F off with your horrible behaviour. I find it upsetting at times and it's not even me you are always having a go at!

Ffs

Or just neglect. What doesn't kill makes them stronger and all that.

Kayano · 14/09/2011 21:22

Reeling - I actually said I was quoting Bambi so no need to point out double negatives. I am aware if them as I am an English graduate Grin

Just not an iPhone graduate so please ignore any spelling or paragraphing issues lol

Kayano
Why do you write your posts
In verse form? Your prose is like the tracks of a winter
Bird, in deep snow
please can you do a haiku
?

LeBOF · 14/09/2011 21:27

I have not been gratuitously mean to anybody, Kayano. You can't expect me to make sure exactly what other people have said in the past to one poster before I try to make a point. Perhaps if many people are expressing irritation, then the target of that could reflect on how they are posting?

Kayano · 14/09/2011 21:27

I don't have any kids yet (cooking 1st now) but I won't tell them I gar stuff up for them, won't run myself ragged while boasting about how much I do and won't let them tease or pick on other people or they will get the back of my hand Grin

I'm just upset due fb bullying of relative and find it started with little things not unlike threads like this Sad

You're supposed to peel the butternut squash? Well, I never! Grin

RockStockAndTwoOpenBottles · 14/09/2011 21:32

Yep, Reeling, hard nosed bitch of a mother. My irksome urch like creatures will confirm this.

I did enjoy your haiku, Kayano.

But I prefer blank verse, sorry :(

tethersend · 14/09/2011 21:45

I got deleted for saying Mitmoo was scraping the barrel? Confused

BatsUpMeNightie · 14/09/2011 21:45

There seems to be an outbreak of deletions on this thread.

chibi · 14/09/2011 21:46

most excellent haiku i award it the commemorative plaque for outstanding excellence in the field of achievement

ReindeerBollocks · 14/09/2011 21:48

I think my father was one of these martyr parents. He constantly told me that if I wasn't born he could have hooked back up with his true love after he dumped my mum. He gave up his true love because he fucked my mum because of me apparently.

Then he wonders why we don't speak.

Do you mean that kind of thing or should I just save this stuff for expensive therapy instead of looking like a weirdo on MN.
