To be shocked at grandmother leaving a 13 month old in a pub on her own

My mum and I took my 13 month old daughter to Wetherspoons for a meal (6pm). The bar is in a different room to the seating area. The pub was crowded. I went to the bar to order the food whilst mum sat with my daughter. Whilst I was at the bar mum came up to me and told me that she had found a bigger table. She had left my daughter on her own in a crowded pub to come and tell me that. I nearly had a heart attack and sent her back immediately. Needless to say I gave mum a good bollocking. Her response? "Sorry I'm not perfect".

AIBU to be shocked? How could a fellow mother be so negligent?

YABU. What do you think would have happened in the approx 120 seconds??

(and surely most people in a Wetherspoons are too pissed to stand up let alone pinch a baby?)

  • no. The bar is up some strairs in a completely different room.

What do you mean by "gave mum a good bollocking"?

  • I told her that she must never leave the baby alone in public ever.

May I also add that daughter is PFB Blush

Whetherspoons pubs are notorious for child snatchers who huddle in groups under the tables, waiting for a mother to nip to the bar for a few seconds....

YABU. Yea perhaps your Mum shouldn't have left your DD. But it would only have been for a few seconds and she just made a mistake. As she said she's not perfect. There was no reason to have a go at her.

YABU to take a "baby out for a meal" at that time.

You sound very disrespectful to your mother. Clearly she has brought up a child and thought it was okay to leave the baby for a couple of minutes if that. She is hardly going to risk the safety of her grandchild. Maybe she could have done a better job with teaching her child manners though.

Pinching isn't the only negative risk. My daughter was distressed at being left alone in a crowded place. She was in tears when I got back.

How do you know being left for a few seconds was what made her cry?

Could simply have been her surroundings or the fact she missed you anyway
