It makes me cringe and also the word ''courting''

Any words that make you cringe?

I started reading this thread but cannot finish as it is making me shudder, is worse than touching cotton wool!
Slacks, Moist, gusset, belly.
Frock, which I hate now seems mild in comparison so YABU in starting this thread of evilness!!

pizzadelivery · 27/08/2011 18:56

Saw panties with or without bloody liners and treggings just whilst typing. Stop it now!
My eyes!

Jugglingjemima · 27/08/2011 19:55

Like frock and courting, both of which annoy my mother.

P***s. Cannot bear. If anyone uses that word I terminate involvement. I do not educate them or explain why. I nuke them. I lived with someone at college who (inadvertently) used that word and I moved out for a week whilst other people educated him. Where did it come from? I know American men who use the word underpants if they mean underpants. Is it a porn thing? I would have thought that in the porn world they don't tend to wear knickers. I am not that keen on knickers. I might revert to drawers. Or even bloomers.

microserf · 27/08/2011 20:07

so many words that are just like nails on a blackboard to me!

I felt physically ill when I saw "Chrimbo" .

I agree with the poster who wanted to bring back "Galoshes" though. Bloody wonderful word.

I did once hear of a chap called "Colin Moist". Wasn't sure if it was real, but just googled it, and there are apparently 2 people in the UK with this name. As in, "Hi, I'm Moist".

DontGoCurly · 27/08/2011 20:17

I really think although there are some truly hideous phrases, there are also some terribly underused ones, namely:

Ask me hole
Ask me hoop
Ask me brown star

and my enduring favourite;

I'll batter thye crap outta ya

Grin

Madam I wish I could 'like' your comment. Smile

Istillfeelseventeen · 27/08/2011 21:31

A "tablet of soap". Eurrrggghh
"crem" for crematorium
"dessert"
"toilet"
"trouser" in the singular. No!!!!!

Salmotrutta · 27/08/2011 21:32

I like the phrase "wind yer neck in" - pithy, quick and punchy.

Tchootnika · 27/08/2011 21:34

"platter"
"parboil"
"sweetmeats"
"spooning"

YouDoTheMath · 27/08/2011 21:36

To me a frock sounds like something Miss Piggy would wear!

YouDoTheMath · 27/08/2011 21:38

Oh and I hate (sorry if this has already been said ) preggo/preggers.

ThePathanKhansWoman · 27/08/2011 21:44

Fascinator

Oh do bloody behave, its a hair band with a few bits of craft rubbish

sparkle and feathers!

Yep acsec fairycakes indeed.

Thumbwitch · 28/08/2011 00:24

MDS - could you not call it the plane's underside?

blueshoes · 28/08/2011 09:46

I like the word 'knickerbockers'. Makes me smile.

AngelsOnHigh · 28/08/2011 09:59

Madam, Wouldn't you say "undercarriage"?

MovingGal · 28/08/2011 10:42

Little cakes have always been Patty cakes where I'm from - can't stand Cupcakes - will tolerate fairy cakes.

Hate panties, never wear them. However always wear undies or pants.

MovingGal · 28/08/2011 10:46

Accidently posted (fancy new keyboard.....)

Meant to say that a Lady would always wear underpants under her lovely frock.

squeakytoy · 28/08/2011 10:58

Just remembered another that makes me cringe.

"bonus child" for step child..

It sounds ridiculous, as if you have won one in a raffle.

Tchootnika · 28/08/2011 15:05

Is there any word more stomach-churningly creepy than 'panties'? I defy any of you to think of such a word...

Thumbwitch · 28/08/2011 15:08

Not in answer to Tchootnika (because I agree) but have just been reminded by another thread of a word that makes me toes curl:
lounge.

Hate it. especially pronounced "Lahnge". It's used interchangeably here to mean the sofa and/or the room in which the sofa is situated - but either way I refuse to use it. Sounds a bit sleazy to me.

Bandwithering · 28/08/2011 15:18

I like the word frock. Actually, I tend to say gúna or frock. Must have a problem with the word dress. Can't stand making love. God I don't think I've ever made love. how sad.

Bandwithering · 28/08/2011 15:20

Tchootnika, my daughter says panties to make me wince. I throw cushions at her and plead with her to stop. Lounge does sound a bit sleazy. Lots of ashtrays piled high, half-empty martini bottles, threadbare 70s chairs...

Tchootnika · 28/08/2011 15:20

'lee-ownge' - yep, gross:

Makes for an image of Michael Sullivan (is that his name? Sunday Sport owner?) reclining on spongey beige Land of Leather clam-shaped 3-piece suite still in its clear plastic packaging. Hideous.

Bandwithering · 28/08/2011 15:28

emmafrost I have heard that too, people saying that a boutiquey style clothes shop had lovely 'pieces'. Sounds so stupid to me.
